Bottle from Binny's - Lakeview. Served in a Fantôme snifter at Kan's place.

A - A thick collar and near-complete cap of tan foam tops a near-black body, with specks of lace dotting the sides of the glass.

S - Dark grains, dark chocolate, earthy bourbon, light oak, caramel, roasted malts, and perhaps a hint of tobacco to round things out. Not the most spirit-forward barrel-aged stout, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as I like the base beers.

T - The taste is quite similar to the aroma, with perhaps a bit more sugar cookie and caramel sweetness amid the darker and roastier flavors. Some nice elements of milk chocolate and vanilla, with less present barrel and bourbon notes. I'm guessing this brew didn't spend a ton of time in the barrels, but that's actually kind of refreshing with all the over-oaked and booze-heavy barrel-aged stouts out there.

M - Smooth medium-full body, pleasant lower carbonation, perhaps a bit thin for 11.5% but not offensively so. Booze is reasonably well-concealed. Quite nice on the whole.

D - I have to say that when Clown Shoes opened I was put off by the labels and the 'contract-brewing' stigma, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that they have a successful model going here. Not quite as good as Porcine Unidragon, but nearly so. Love being able to buy a great beer without waiting in a line or chasing a truck.

22oz bottle split between three pint glasses. If there's a bottle code, I can't see it.

Pours black and smooth with a tiny ring of pale head. Slightly translucent around the edges, so not entirely opaque. Smell is chocolatey, pruney, licoricey, a little bit of alcohol.

Taste is smooth and well integrated, Starts out sweet and fruity and goes through some smokey chocolatey bittersweetness, roasty bitterness, and then maybe a hint of hoppy bitterness.

Mouthfeel is thick but dry. Overall, this is pretty good.
