i'm the bar manager at chives and i'm giving it a modest rating. i don't want to be unfair and toot my own horn so everything gets an average rating from me, i just want to put chives on the map! there isn't another bar in alliance that sells any craft beer beyond sam adams boston lager. chives has a decent selection of english and german beers, ipas, belgians, american craft brews including the full line of great lakes and thirsty dog, mexican beers, and stouts. also the wide selection of almost every bottled american adjunct lager. there's a discounted draft beer of the month every month which due to majority tastes is more often than not something less than flavorful, but there are always several taps devoted to quality craft and imported brews. currently a selection of around 60 craft and quality import bottles and 25 macros. the menu is expansive- sometimes too big, with notable favorites being burgers, steaks, and seafood along with interesting nightly specials and prime rib every weekend. i won't touch the subject of service and instead let others decide. i set out to make pricing competitive so everyone with a taste for or interest in good beer could sit down and enjoy a few selections off my hand picked beer menu without breaking the bank, with most bottles of craft beer costing $3.25.

I've been wanting to check out Chives for a couple of years now, ever since I found it here on BA. A relative of mine lives in Alliance pretty close to this joint, so the wife and I wandered over there one night during our latest Thanksgiving visit to Ohio.

Chives is a dive, no doubt. This is where you watch small-town rednecks get hammered on a seemingly endless supply of light beers and locals munching on a variety of deep-fried delights. The ambiance sure ain't much, but there is no other place in Alliance to drink craft beer.

Of the six taps, two of them are good: Rogue Yellow Snow and Thirsty Dog 12 Dogs. But better yet is the bottle selection: a small hand-written board over the bar announces the latest arrivals, which include a ton of Thirsty Dog (Bernese barleywine among them), Yeti Imperial Stout, Great Lakes Nosferatu and Fin du Monde.

There is also a small cooler down below with more craft brews: Brooklyn, more Great Lakes, Belgian stuff...

Prices are gentle ($3.75 for bottles) and the bartender knows and loves craft beer. Alliance is not the best town for good beer, but we were lucky enough to strike a conversation with two craft-loving fellows from Ohio. It was fun talking brewery tours and beers all around the US.

I may come back to Chives next time I'm in Alliance. They sure are trying.
