The beer builds a very high beige airy head when I pour the beer. The colour is dark amber-red-copper (30 EBC), the liquid is clear. Some lacing occurs when the head very slowly sinks down. This is more or less how an ESB is supposed to look like.

The smell is hoppy with a grand English bitterness. Hay, honey, dark rye bread. A slight hint of solvents in the background. Fruity flavours of ripe apricots and apples plus some hazelnuts.

The taste is bitter-sweet with lots of fruits, but also hints of chocolate and coffee. Honey, ripe pears/apples, apricots and toffee candy. The bitterness is potent but not overpowering. Some bitter herbs. Medium to full body. The aftertaste got a lingering fruity-buttery bitter flavour with hints of hay and a mellow sweetness.

The carbonation is medium strong, the bubbles small and fresh. The liquid is smooth with a bit of dryness in the finish.

A very well crafted ESB.

Appearance: Filling a Staropramen tulip glass is a black-tea colored liquid with trace amounts of burgundy red. 2 – 3 fingers of light khaki colored compact foam leaving splotches of long remaining lace on the glass. There’s no visible carbonation.

Aroma: This is one incredibly malty nose! The aroma profile also includes acute tartness (like a red wine) paired with butter, giving it a butyric note. Hm, more over there are traces of nuts, expressly bitter almonds, but also dried dark fruits, mostly figs but also plums and dates.

Flavor: The subtlest of bitterness, with a dominant bitter almonds and marzipan character, combined with toffee and honey like sweetness. Once again lots of nuts, roasted as well as brunt malts and flavors, dark dried fruits, more precisely figs. Waiting in the background is a whiff apples and pears, similar to Calvados. Letting the flavors linger for a while, the marzipan and figs get the upper hand flavor wise.

Mouthfeel: Soft and creamy liquid, perfect and smooth carbonation just giving you lots of subtle presence. There’s a minimal bitterness in the aftertaste accompanying the flavor all the way through drinking.

One funny thing I observed was the way the bitterness remained on the gums of the lower part of the mouth, just below my teeth. Weird…

Overall impression: This is the yin and yang of sweet and bitter. The aroma, flavors and mouthfeel march hand in hand. The perfect unison between bitter hops and malty sweetness. Bravo Ängö! Thank you for ÄSB (Ängö Superb Bitter )!

It happens occasionally that I have a beer that’s truly memorable. This is one of them. I simply couldn’t get it out of my head for the rest of that day.

Thanks to Per!

Pours a deep dark amber orange with a thin tan head and large bubbles. The nose is a bit sweet with notes of pale malts and booze. Berries, figs, and some nut with notes of booze in the back. The flavor is much of the same, very smooth body, a touch thin, light carb, hints of sweetness, light nutty flavors, pale malts, faint hop in finish.

A: Pour is hazy light brown with hints of red. Creamy beige medium-large head, slow dissipation leaves nice lacings.

S: Buttery, butterscotch. Slightly roasted sweet malt. Fruity, floral brittish hops balanced with bitter hops. Red apples.

T: Buttery sweet roasted malts, caramell and dark bread. Flowery and fruity; red apples, oranges. Bitter hops. Liqourice, strong Espresso and faint dark chocialte.

M: Long lovely bitter aftertaste. Body as well as carbonation is medium.

O: A very nice, well balanced ESB, not too sweet. Lovely bitterness.

The beer is hazy, brownish amber, an off-white firm head leaving lots of lacing.

Smelling of grass, hay and some yeast.

The taste has sweet fudge, green apples and lemon, and a seedy bitterness.

Medium carbonation, rather fizzy bubbles, a bit of a syrup feeling.

E bit too sweet, which makes it less elegant.
