So i'd never been to Galena before, but heard it was something of a tourist trap. More accurately an affluent, WASPy weekend getaway type of place. Not much in the way of culture or diversity, just shopping, drinking, with a little history thrown in (President Grant's home and 19th c. architecture).

111 Main is an upscale restaurant with a slightly above average beer list. A few months ago they hosted a Goose Island beer dinner, after that it was on my radar. Atmosphere was a bit stuffy, the room was long with 2 rows of tables. Plank wood floors and exposed brick walls, pressed tin ceiling, track lighting. We were the only diners in there under 50.

Unfortunately the crowd here hasn't yet accepted that wine is no longer the pinnacle of sophistication... oh well, more beer for me. Everyone was drinking wine here. The graying old money fellow at the next table over was giving me a look like I was a folksy yokel ordering a BEER in such a classy joint, lol. Anyhow, the beer list is not that adventurous, despite staples like Two Hearted, Pere Jacques (in a chilled pint) and BCS. Leinies, Miller, and other macros round out the American section of the list, maybe 20 bottles at the most (no taps). They were out of the local Galena beers (formerly contract brewed at Sand Creek) as they will soon be brewing on site in a new brewpub down the street. The Two Hearted I had seemed a bit faded.

Table service was very accommodating and friendly, though the hostess was somewhat artificial and insincere.

The food was the saving grace of our experience, the menu was well thought out and locally sourced. Etoufée and mac & cheese were both hearty, tasty dishes, with soup & salad, and a homemade baguette.

Overall I probably wouldn't return, unless there was a major improvement in the beer list. Dropping the chilled pint glasses wouldn't hurt either. Food was great, I guess i'd just head down the street to Cornerstone for drinks afterward. 2011: Galena Brewing Co. for dinner and drinks, all in one stop.
