Deep red-brown/purply-mahogany, depending on how much light is behind it. A deep copper color on the edges. Inch of white-cream head, which is gone fairly quickly save for some bubbles along the glass and an island ring.

Dark cherry tartness, bread crust, and some other vague, sweet aromas. A spiciness creeping in; it's all quite strong. Perhaps slightly vinegar-like.

First impression in taste is of the strong malt ilk- toffee, bread, and perhaps even some white chocolate. The tart cherry is also centre-stage, with some plum and raspberry mixed in as well. The sourness is gentle, never too assertive, but the brew is quite sweet.

Medium-light in body. The finish isn't quite dry enough to zonk out the rather felt residual sweetness. Still- very, very pleasant as a sipper. The somewhat surprisingly mouth-coating quality of the finish certainly keeps you coming back for more.

Refreshing and sweet, spicy and delectable. Tart cherry and malt are very strong, and the sweetness makes it a little heavy handed. Yet the beer is still a treat, a guilty pleasure.

Ichtigem’s Grand Cru Cuveé 2013
Flanders Oud Bruin – 6.5% - 330ml Bottle – Best Before 01.05.2021

Ichtegem's grand cru is a Flemish red ale. This unique style of beer is brewed as two separate beers, that are blended together to form the final product. Similar to the lambic geuze, one beer is brewed to be aged in oak barrels. This beer is aged for two years, where exposure to oxygen, the wood of the barrels, and naturally occuring microflora alter it's flavor, making it dry and sharp with an acidic tang. The second half of the equation is a sweet young beer, brewed before blending, that the brewer uses to balance the beer to his specifications. The Ichtegems grand cru is nutty, malty, and has a subtle dark cherry tang to it that balances it beautifully.

Appearance: Deep red/brown with a constant small, off-white, head. Lots of small bubbles rising quickly through the beer. Small bits of lacing.

Aroma: Cherries, cranberries and other sour red fruits. Oak, balsamic vinegar. Smells acidic, pretty typical of the style.

Taste: Quite a lot of barnyard funk up front, more than I remember from last time I had this beer. Perhaps due to this bottle being 3 years old? Tart and a little sour. Not as sweet as some other Flanders red / Bruins that I've had before. Can taste the alcohol this bottle, I had a fresher bottle a few months ago and it was definitely less boozy and sweeter than this one. Lacking in finish.

Mouthfeel: Fairly low in body and a little tart on the end.

Overall: I enjoyed the fresher bottle that I had over this one. This one feels a little unbalanced - perhaps done to the age, although the best before date is 2021! 2013 not such a good year? Either way, this is an ok beer this particular bottle is no match for Rodenbach Grand Cru or Duchesse de Bourgogne.

2012 bottle poured into Duvel glass on 5/5/16. Rich color, nice cream colored head. Blackberry scent. Taste is sweet, boozy, bitter, yeasty, and tangy, very exciting, powerful but balanced. Like a roller coaster. Malt powerhouse creeps back in with the aftertaste, which is subtle, like getting clocked by a gold brick wrapped in suede. The mouthfeel is excellent, with just a slight hint of butter, where it adds to the experience rather than ruining it.

Hits those earthy mud tones of dark red and brown. Leaves 1/6" head that vanishes quickly. Mostly brown malt toffee notes and an underlying tart aspect to the aroma.

A higher than expected sourness level, maybe a 6 on the 1-10 scale, which is up there for a flanders. Leans cherry, a little much in the vinegar notes. Lots of earthy acidity. Wood is understated. Some sweetness doesn't cut through the vinegar and sourness.

A decent option if its around, not the upper echelon of flanders beer though.

Dark red colour, nice thick beige head. In the nose loads of red fruit mainly cherries. Mainly red fruits, something biscuity, hint of vanilla, something murky at the end, little or no tart. Medium body, little carbonation.
I prefer my Flemish reds a lot more sour. On the plus side it's has a bit more body then it's colleagues in the style.

Bottle was a gusher and lost about a 1/4 of it. Pours a deep Amber with off white head. Medium lace on the glass. Aroma is strong tartness with dark fruit. Flavor is tart but not overpowering. Dark cherries, light malt, and a Belgian candi sugar finish. Medium bodied with high carbonation. Overall aside from being highly carbonated, this is a great sour!

Bottle from Brewers Haven. This my kind of sour, not overly puckering, perhaps tempered by the barrel aging. Some mellow wooden notes are added as a result. A murky ruby brown pour, soft tightly beaded head, acetic plum aroma. Taste is initially tart, mellowing quickly to a dry, sweet finish. Excellent all around.

Brownish copper in color. Oak notes in the nose but the wine notes predominate. Tastes like a mild dry red wine that was opened and left out for a week.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a dark brown/amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of dark fruits, grapes. Taste is a bit wine like, tart, some malts, vinegar. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, a style I know little about, but a decent beer.

Clear red-brown beer with a thin head.

Nose: Tart, cherry, oak, red apple, vinegar and pear.
Taste: Cerry, tart, oak, sourness, sweet apple, grape, blackberries and bread.
Body: Medium body with a crisp carbonation. Pretty sweet but the sourness balance the beer.

Very good Grand Cru from Ichtegems with complex, balanced taste. A little to sweet for me. I think I put my remaining bottle on hold for a few years and let it mature :)

Had this for the first time yesterday at the Cloverleaf. I hadn't had a Flanders Oud Bruin in quite some time but the appearance, taste, and range of flavors in this seemed pretty typical for the style. Combined with the relatively easygoing nature of this beer and the subdued alcoholic presence, the flavor profile was gently pleasing while just remaining complex enough to slow down and savor.

This poured a pinkish-brown (as odd as that sounds) with a good amount of carbonation to it but not a lot of head. Reminded me of champagne in quite a few ways except that this wasn't clear and there were some different flavors here. Raspberries, vinegar, a hint of nuts, and juice were all found here on top of a sweet base and the lightness of yeast. The degree of sourness here was good as this wasn't as heavy as similar beers that I've had from Europe and it went down as easily and nicely as I could picture for any example of this style.

Booze? It's here but like the hops. you'll never notice it. I haven't had much in the way of beers from Flanders or in a Flanders Oud Bruin style but this was much easier than I was led to have guessed and proof that more breweries should give something like this a go. The subtle complexity made me want more and if it was just a tad less potent, this would make for a fabulous session beer.

The nose hints of wet horse blanket, light tartness, a blend of fresh and over ripe fruit. Pours reddish brown with a slight haze under a tan tinted finely bubbled 1” white foam cap. This is not as intensely sour on the palate as other Flemish Red Ales coming across a little sweeter and tamer with fruit, plums, cherries, and malt but no chocolate or roast and just a little tang with a sweet tart finish. It has a medium body and low medium carbonation.

a little steep i think at ten bucks a go, but pretty cool beer here. is a flanders red type through and through, with its vinegar sour profile and sweet malt middle. this is interesting to looks at, not much head, very syrupy texture, and a lot of haze, even for the style. it smells nice, rich and fruity, almost gummy on the malt body, red malt transcends the caramel realm for dark ripe fruit, apple, and bread pudding. the flavor matches the nose, with moderate acidity balanced out by dried fruity sweetness. cherry and raisin come to mind, brown sugar, lemon. the sweetness and the vinegar are weird, and i am glad i am sharing the bottle, but the beer does appear to be quite traditional. have not seen this in out market here until recently. more body than the style calls for makes it linger a little too long and lose some of its refreshing qualities, but its mature beer, far out, and tasty on the whole, especially if you like the traditional belgian sour red types. Lots and lots of barrel here, if that's your thing

L: Nice brownish color. Slightly transparent. Low head that reseeded quickly.

S: Black cherry and some strawberry. A touch of cedar.

T: Tastes like it smells with blacks cherry. Except here its a bit more extreme. Sweets are sweeter and sour is sharper. A little too fruit juicy with some red grape, red apple and ripe pear notes. Finishes somewhat crisp and sharp but the sweetness does not yield.

M: Light, and goes down really easy. Again too sweet which leaves a candy feeling after a while.

O: It's got some nice flavors but too sweet. It could have used a little bit more sharpness to finish it. Somewhat lacks the complexity of other oud bruins.

11.2 fl oz bottle poured into a tulip.

A - Dark brown with red and black overtones. One finger head with decent head retention.

S - Vinegar, mild apple and pear, bread notes.

T - Similar to the nose, though the pear and bread notes are at the forefront.

M- Very solid. Carbonation is a touch above average, but it is still has some creamieness to it.

O - Not as sour as some others I have tried (or are my taste buds adjusting?), but very tasty and well done.

Pours thick head of fine bubble. Looks like a ton of carbonation. Dark ruby color. Merky. The nose is certainly sour. Notes of apple cider vinegar, apples, cherries, and dusty oak. The taste is also quite sour and slightly sweet. The taste follows the nose. A little syrupy. Smooth, a little tacky, and medium body.

This is a good Flanders. It's a little too sweet but the tart level is very nice.
A little too syrupy.It's similar to Rodenbach.

11.2 oz bottle, snifter

A – Dark, dark amber to brown, with a deep red tint. A couple centimeters of pink foam on top, dissipating quickly to pretty lacing on top. Looks a lot like grape juice.

S – Sweet cherries, tartness is big on the nose. Some sour acidity. Very low note of funk in the background.

T – Some puckering tartness mixed with candy sweetness, but not cloying. Wild cherries, some raspberries or blackberries. Sourness/tartness is very mild through the finish, which has some mild acidity.

M – Somewhat thin, but not to a fault. Low to moderate carbonation does not impact the palate. The sweetness, tart and acidity are balanced toward the sweetness. Moderate bite on the finish.

O – A flavorful beer, a little too heavily balanced toward the sweetness for me to love it. Good, but fairly unremarkable, especially for a style that tends toward complexity.

Poured into a CH'TI 25cl stemmed tulip glass with an aggressive pour.

Appearance: Beautiful clear amber depicting cherry oak and red wine, nice creamy fine Belgian white head with good lacing.

Smell: Nice strong smoked cherry with the bite of malt.

Taste: Not too sweet and not too tart, the cherry oak and malt all are strong and in the front and easily discernible. Not overly carbonated, the heavy malt making the cherry not too sweet or tart.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, light carbonation, the sweetness, tartness, and malt give an interesting bite on the tongue that lingers for quite a while.

Overall: Very good Grand Cru with intriguing flavors, nice warm buzz from 6.5 Abv, will definitely get again. Expiration April 29th 2019

Brown, lighter brown head. On tap at Mikkeller SF.

Funky, sorta metallic, fruity.

Cherry's what I first said, then I read sour apple on here. I'll stick with the former. Pronounced, forward, anything but shy, like a tart dubbel. The yeast and malt are prominent. This is as close as I'll get to enjoying a sour. I can't ever really pick up the alcohol with sour's either.

This flanders brown has healthy sweetness that unites a pretty complex mix of sour lactic acidity with muscadine tartness finished by considerable minerality.

Bottle from Lizardville, Cleveland had no date.

Will definitely be drinking this one again!

On tap at Victoire in Rochester, NY.

Pours a dark blood-red, slightly hazy, with no head, and only a little bit of lacing.

Smells like sour cherries, green apple, vinegar, and lactic acid.

The taste is similar. Fairly sweet with cherry flavor up front, almost like slightly less sweet maraschino cherry juice, some acidity washes over the palate, along with similar sour cherry tastes.

Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation. Fairly easy to drink. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel.

This was a pretty good Oud Bruin. It's probably a little sweeter than typical, but that's ok with me.

Pours a dark brown color free of sediment. Aroma of red wine vinegar, oak and malts.
Mild tartness greets the palate along with brown sugar, port and vinegar. Sherry notes from oxidation, along with a nice cherry flavor. Medium bodied, well carbonated, tart mineral finish. Musty oak, faint herb and grass, but moreso a pretty solid oud bruin ale. Cocoa like malt underneath a light tartness. Overall, pretty good beer here, Id reach for this again.

Appearance : dark brown color with tan foamy head.
Smell : sour woody and oak aromas.
Taste & mouthfeel : dry roasted malt flavors, with a slight acidity in finish.
Drinkability : a good beer in the Belgian style Flemish Red Ale, matured in oak barrels.

A- Reddish brown, very little head, dissipated quickly.

S- Sour cherries and Belgian candi sugar, lactic and acetic acid. Very sour nose, quite good.

T- Sourness is milder than the nose, it starts sour and finishes like a quad or non sour grand cru.

M- medium body, slight acid puckering

O- Great beer. Will have again. The sourness is relatively mild and the flavor is not as heavy as others in the style. I will still have it again.

The beer had a tart wine like aroma. Very little head on the pour/ almost none. Dark red in color. The beer starts with a fruity (plum maybe) tartness and ends with a hint of the oak. There is a malt backbone from start to finish. The tartness is really carried by the carbonation the bubbles have a very fine feel in the mouth.
