Pours chestnut/mahogany with a pinky of tan head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Toasty malts, caramel, breadyness & some nuttyness as this warms

T: Toasty malts, caramel, a bit of grainyness, plus dryness up front. Brown sugar, toastyness, & nuttyness as this warms. Finishes with caramel, a touch of grainyness, dryness & nuttyness. Almost pulled a 4.5

MF: Medium bodied, low carbonation & great balance, slight stickyness

Drinks very easy, a nice unsung American Brown here, recommended. I'd happily session on this

I have had this beer in my fridge for the better part of a year, so I sure hope that it is fresh. I would hate for it to suck if there are only two other reviews. Let's see what happens.

Appearance: Pours a clear dark brown to garnet color with a 1/4" head of active tan foam after the pour. The head fell back into the beer after about 20 seconds and there was very little lacing left behind.

Aroma: Malts are the key player in the aroma with lots of toasty notes and chocolate. There is some hops in here, but they take a back seat. The hops contribute a subtle floral aromatic.

Taste: The flavor is alright, but there is way more sweetness than I expected. It seems like it was a process thing and the yeast didn't attenuate too high of a strike temp. The chocolate is still the key player as the aroma suggested. The finish is balanced toward the malty sweetness, and there is a bit of a syrupy feeling left on the back of the throat after drinking. I don't really pick up any alcohol, but there is a mild sensation like burning on the back of the throat that I believe is from the acidity rather than any alcohol.

Opinion: This is an alright beer. I don't think that the age has anything to do with the flavors that I mentioned. It seems more process related, and that would make me raise an eyebrow at the rest of the line-up. There is no contamination or anything, but the recipe is a little off for my opinion.
