Bottle # E-1242

The Equinox edition of Howler pours ruby red and glows like actual rubies when backlit. Clarity is good enough to clearly read the label on the glass through the body. Tiny carbonation bubbles seem to make the body glisten as they make their way to the surface. The foam is dense and off white, settling to a cap and thick ring that completely sheets the glass in lace. The looks of this beer alone make my mouth water.

The nose is rich and pungent. This seems to be a sweeter version of the style which in this case I'm alright with since it leans toward caramel drizzles and candied maltiness. Equinox apparently have a very citric and tropical presence. Papaya and tangerine hit first before easing into very pithy, nondistinct citrus. Mild herbals float the around the periphery with a spicy pepper backend. The candied maltiness really plays well with the citric notes and the caramel doesn't hurt either.

Surprisingly it's not as sweet as I expected. The caramel is still present in healthy doses. Candied citrus peel washes over the palate. The tropical notes have toned down but papaya is still kicking. There's a peppery kick on the swallow from both the Equinox used and the alcohol while soft herbals wrap it up. This is a pretty complex beer in all honesty. All the aspects seem to play nicely together.

The weight is there on the front end, just short of heavy, but as the carbonation picks up the weight magically drops. The body is velvety smooth and actually soft on the tongue. A touch of oiliness is left behind with each drink but the finish dries up nicely. Bitterness never reaches beyond moderate even with such a high acid hop. Drinkability? More, please.

Equinox Howler is another damn good beer from the husband and wife team Up Nort'. The malt profile is more along the lines of a red ale but the hopping is all IPA and it dries up quickly. There's sugar but not as much as expected, the new hop varietal is a keeper, and the drinkability is surprisingly high for such a hefty libation. I wouldn't hesitate in picking this up again if it becomes available in the future..

Super soapy resinous appearance. Brew is killer amber/red with nice orange tint. Head pours full two-fingers.

Kick ass aroma. Super gooey sweet pear scent. This is awesome, but I could see how it could be hit-or-miss. Just a touch too much like cookie dough.

Wow. Smooth, with slight too much dryness. Carbonation is fluid yet strong. There's a bit too much sweetness. Fruit forward and very fruity. I could use a bit more leather and less gooey sugars. Grapy, Stringy, drawnout.

This is a very complex brew. Awesome at heart, but I could see how some people may call it a mess. I dig it and highly recommend. Thanks Adam!

Dark amber color with little head. Earthy sweet aroma. Sweet taste. Mild hoppyness. Actually mild flavor in general. It’s ok. Was expecting more from this.
