Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Dark brown, almost black pour with one finger beige head with decent retention and great lacing. Really roasty, smokey nose with hints of cocoa and chocolate. The taste is dominated by the smokey malt as well along with hints of cocoa, espresso, burnt toast, leather, dark fruits, and some subtle sweet nuttiness. The mouthfeel is a bit more carbonated than most Porters, but I really liked the body and it had a nice dry and almost spicy finish. Overall, another great offering from Viven. I can see why it's called Smoked Porter in the US. Very smokey, but not overdone. Can't wait to cook with it!

330 ml bottle, Beergium- Pours dark black with a large tanned foamy head. Medium carbonation. Nice lacing. Smell - coffee, roasted malts, slight caramel. Taste - light smoky foretaste, roasted malty backbone, light dry bitter finish. Very nice dark ale, particularly the light smokiness. really liked this one and worth finding.

33cl bottle. Very dark mahogany pour with a medium height, fine-grained, tan head with decent retention. Notes of smoke, roasted malts, bitter chocolate, some cocoa and subtle roasted coffee beans. Medium body and carbonation and a very smoky and roasty finish.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2012. Acquired ages ago from a Belgian webshop and stored in my garage.

Poured into a Delirium chalice. A very deep brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass; no light penetrates it. Yields a large head of creamy light brown foam with good retention; this slowly subsides to a frothy surface layer. Some lacing. Aroma of intense roasted malt with notes of burnt grain, bitter coffee, cocoa, molasses, mild smokiness, earthy yeast and stewed hops. A mildly warming whiff of alcohol in the background. Rich and delicious.

Tastes like a sack-full of roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, roasted coffee, cocoa, molasses, subtle phenolics, mild spice, earthy yeast and stewed hops. A hint of vanilla and booze in the background, followed by a strident bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, though a tad insubstantial for the style and strength. Pretty astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, coffee and stewed hops.

Fantastic - a big, black beast of a beer. More stout than porter, with tons of roasted malt character and the full profile that accompanies it. The aroma and flavour are superb. The only minor weakness is the body, which is a shade too thin. If you are a fan of dark beers then this is a must-try brew; don't hesitate to grab it if you have the chance.

11.2oz bottle, part of some rather dear 4-packs currently inhabiting Alberta's 'finer' bottleshop shelves of late.

This beer pours a very solid black abyss, with the barest of amber basal edges, and three fingers of puffy, rocky, and bubbly brown head, which leaves some nice frilly and sudsy lace around the glass as it quickly fades away.

It smells of roasted caramel malt, roasted big game, roasted dark orchard stone fruit, roasted coffee, roasted milk, and sure, roasted leafy, earthy, and musty green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, smoked fish/beef/pork - take yer fuckin' pick - bittersweet cocoa powder, day-old cafe-au-lait, more free-range ashiness, a subtle smoked fruitiness, and some tame earthy, weedy, and scorched grassy verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate in its basically supportive frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and mostly smooth, with just a bit of char worming its way into my various palates, as such. It finishes off-dry, the smoke, caramel, and coffee esters fussing about the end of the world, or something.

Overall, this is certainly one hell of a smoky offering, for one that absolutely does not mention it on the label - I can't imagine what the 'actual' Viven Smoked Porter is like. Lots of ashy and charred notes abounding here, but not wholly to the detriment of the offering, what with the caramel, cocoa, and coffee rejoinders. Good, sure, but get a better import agent, already.

Purchased at the LCBO for just over the $3.00 mark for a 330ml bottle. Served at 8deg C in a tulip

A- Opens well and pours a 2" high brown head that lasts forever. Very dark brown colour

S- Not a lot here. So subdued

T- Artificial smoke. Not for me. Very light porter backbone but that smoke kills this brew

M- Just a quagmire of everything

O- Not for me. Bringing the other back for refund. Rest down the sink.

Food Pairing

I will try to pair this correctly but it's not easy....... This brew might go well with....... Something so hot that anything is great! LOL

Enjoy if dare!

A fairly fresh bottle poured very dark, tobacco brown rather than black. Big tan rocky head with big bubbles. Coffee, toffee, yeasty smells, some cherry, some basement, but overall restrained. Chicory coffee flavor, more toffee, toast, a bit of something herbaceous, balanced nicely with a bitter through-line. Quite a leggy-feeling beer but nice effervescence to liven up the mouth, coating but not cloying. A nicely belged example of the substyle (not English porter but the Belgian take on it).

Pours black with a towering dark tan/liqourice coloured moussey head.
Nose shows cocoa, roasted coffee and BBQ smoke. Pretty intense.
Similarly roasty flavours, lots more coffee and smoke. Underneath is some sweet caramel. Finishes with a powerful roasty bitterness.
Carbonation is too high.
