750ml bottle poured into a goblet.

A: Chestnut brown with a haze. Tight and fine-bubbled beige head retains at a quarter inch. Thin rings of lacing lazily slide back down into the beer.

S: Caramel, toffee, carob, muddled coffee. Sweet dates and figs. Yeasty. Peat and smoke come out too. Overall a very shy nose, surprisingly.

T: Coffee, carob, nutty, earthy. Cherry tartness in the middle. Plums, currants, and candi sugar. Hint of alcohol. The barrel takes over the back end in a big way. Briny and peaty/smokey flavors ride out the finish.

M: Big and full body, though is sits lightly. Ample carbonation gently whisks it off of the tongue. Warming.

O: It stays curiously shy on the nose, but the scotch barrel is very apparent on the taste. Drinks easily and hides its strength well. It seems to have tarted up a little in the barrel, which is a bit of a distraction. I still found myself enjoying it.

Poured into a Gavroche tulip. Pours a medium to dark red-orange amber with a two finger white head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of bready and caramel malt, light stone fruit, dark dried fruit, whiskey, light smoke and vanilla. Flavor is caramel malt, light stone fruit, fig, plum, apple juice, a hint of whiskey and smoke; finishes unexpectedly tart and astringent. Unfortunately, I think this bottle is compromised, although in the early stages. I'm familiar with this series and the underlying blond ale and this is not quite right. Light bodied with very active carbonation. The initial flavors are great, but the light sourness and stringency increase quickly to a less than satisfactory finish. My first miss from this series, but I think it is just a bad bottle. Close inspection shows a slight drip line down the bottle, so maybe a cork failure. Promising, but this was too expensive to buy another one.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2014 vintage bottling. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big raisin, plum, cherry, fig, apple, red grape, caramel, toffee, toast, vanilla, whiskey, oak, light peat smoke, light pepper, herbal, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and scotch barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, cherry, fig, apple, red grape, caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, vanilla, whiskey, oak, light peat smoke, light pepper, herbal, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spiciness and slight tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, cherry, fig, apple, red grape, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, vanilla, whiskey, oak, light peat smoke, light pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and scotch barrel flavors; with a great malt/yeast/barrel balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming lingering after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged Belgian strong dark ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and scotch barrel flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

i think this is one of the coolest projects in beer right now, and although i have only had a handful of them, it has been a real cool learning experience. this is the only one ive had the privilege of drinking on tap, so that was cool too. the beer is paler than i remember other being, perhaps a different base beer than the others, more amber than brown, which is how i remember it being. nice frothy head on it though with great retention. the smell is awesome from the single malt here, its smoky and earthy and dank and intense, more intense than i remember the barrels being in the other beer. the flavor of the scotch is there too, also extremely intense. way more smoke than expected, which i think fits the belgian base beer really well. you dont often get smoke in belgian yeast beers, so this is a cool experience. the barrel overshadows the base beer a little bit, but thats okay. i cant taste or feel the alcohol at all either, which i remember not being the case in others. overall very good, they should make this one all the time, far more memorable than the other few that ive had from this series, save the grappa, which was downright bizarre. i will look forward to getting my hands on more of these down the line. they arent easy to come by...

Interesting offering at the bottle share. Has a profound earthy and nutty base, with layers of smoke, booze, toasted caramel, vanilla, orchard fruit, and peat. Balances, but some of the flavors do clash a bit. Interesting and fun, but no need to have again.

A- Pours a dark hazy golden color with a small white head that reduces to a ring

S- Floral aromas mesh with a light oaky character and some fruity esters

T- floral flavors follow the aroma with sweet honey and oak barrel. Earthy with a light linger of scotch on the finish

M- medium body and carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel with a smooth finish

O- Comparing this to the Port Charlotte, I think that it worked much better. The Charlotte was so heavily peaked that it took over the entire beer. The Bruichladdig complimented the beer, rather than overwhelming it
