Served on tap in a 20 oz mug

Appearance – Served a deep brown colored brew with a two finger tan colored head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving only spotty lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is a mix of sweet and roasted malt. The roasted malt smells have hints of chocolate and coffee mixed within with the sweeter smells being of a caramel and light brown sugar aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet roasted malt taste comprised of a mix of roasted barely and caramel. As the flavor advances further the caramel dries a bit with a light more brown sugar like taste coming to the tongue in its place. At this time so to comes some cocoa flavors adding to the more dark flavor profile of the brew. In the end with the sweetness getting lighter a rather crisp and moderately roasted flavor is left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side for a darker brew with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. While not ideal for the more roasted flavors of the brew as it gave it a bit more of a watery feel, it did make for a more refreshing style dark lager and overall worked for the warmer weather in which it was enjoyed.

Overall- A little thin and too sweet up front, but it dries out some at the end making for a more crisp and easy drinking black lager. Not bad.

Enjoyed at the brewpub in Henderson, served in a mug.

Muddy maroon, wheat-colored at the bottom edges. A thin, fuzzy, light khaki head becomes a moderately sized ring.

Touch of coffee in the nose. Very light roast. Wheat bread and a hint of apple add complexity.

Smooth, creamy flavor. Toasted bread, a touch of bitter chocolate. Peanuts roll in at the swallow. A light yet enjoyable flavor with a clean, dry finish.

Creamy mouthfeel with moderate to high, prickly carbonation. Body is a touch under medium and velvet smooth. The clean finish wipes the palate dry between each sip. Actually pretty great.

For a Munich dunkel lager made in a casino-based brewpub, Barley’s Black Mountain is surprisingly good. Crazy drinkable, and the price is right. I could pound mugs of this all night with burgers or some dark meat.

Finally getting around to having this brew again at Barley's as it had disapeared for quite awhile. Reviewed from vist to Barley's on Oct 20th:

Poured a nice dark brown color with a nice head that stuck around for a few sips. Aroma was malt and maybe some chocolate. Taste was nice: creamy with malt, chocolate/cocoa, and no hop bitterness. Definitely the best brew I've had from Barley's and I hope it's on when we get to Vegas again.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a dark amber-brown color with a thin beige head that dissipates quickly. Spotty lacing. Lightly roasty aroma with mild malt and coffee. Medium body with toasted malt, chocolate and mild hops flavor. The finish is lightly smoky with malt and hops flavors that linger a bit. Somewhere between a Dunkel and Schwarzbier, albeit not a great example of either. Average overall.

Sampled on-tap at the brewpub (April 2007).

This beer poured a black color with light brown foam that persisted and then slowly settled. The smell was dry and malty (modest but good). The taste was dry malt with a light roasted malt flavor and notes of cocoa. The hoppiness was moderate but was well balanced. The mouthfeel was very, very smooth and creamy with medium body and moderate carbonation. The finish was malty. This was an excellent and very drinkable beer. I am wondering whether this is now more of a Schwarzbier instead of a Dunkel with this brewer?

Appearance: clear dark brown in color with a short 1/2" head that falls immediately to a spot or two of surface bubbles. No lacing develops.

Smell: some soft malt sweetness is all that is detectable.

Taste: very simple beer here. The malt base was a bit weak along with very soft hints of bitterness, roasted tones, and raisins make up a pretty dull lager.

Mouthfeel: smooth from start to finish. Relatively clean aftertaste. Lighter side of a medium bodied beer.

Drinkability: decent as this is easily quaffable. The overall mild flavors knock this down a notch or two. I remember this beer being my favorite of the brewpub many years ago, but not this time.

Presentation: Sampled on draft at Barley’s Casino and Brewing Co. as part of a Sampler during a visit with fellow BA UncleJimbo. Listed on the brewpub blurb as ‘Black Mountain’ and described as a Schwarz Lager.

Appearance: Dark murky brown cum black body with an off-white light tan head that left a few rings even on my sampler. Low carbonation in this one.

Nose: Dark malts and some charcoal of sorts. Slight sweet aspect to this one - rather inoffensive bordering on absent.

Taste: Thin start, sweet malts, yeasty feel that is clean. Dark feel but with a light lager character. Disappointing start, though I did start to warm to this one. Maybe a larger sample would have swayed me more.

Mouthfeel: Started with a low feel, light and watery, but it gained some body as it warmed. Blind tasted I would have said that this was a light lager. Average body lacked support from the carbonation.

Drinkability: Easily taken down, rather nice in the short term, inoffensive in the long term, but nothing more than above average at any moment in time.

Overall: More of a darkish bump rather than a Black Mountain. A rather nice drink, but it lacks something special in the long run to be any more than above average.
