Lower Bankhead Black PilsnerLower Bankhead Black Pilsner

Brewed by:
Banff Ave. Brewing Co.
Alberta, Canada

Style: Schwarzbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Retrieving coal from the depths of the earth requires a dark soul like the one this pilsner possesses. Roasted malts add character, flavor and color to this classic German style Swartz beer. Dust off the head lamp to get to the bottom.

650ml bottle, procured via the brewpub's off-sales fridge, in the midst of an on-premise water pipe emergency - gotta give some mad props to their customer-comes-first attitude.

This beer pours a clear, dark red-brick amber colour, with one flabby finger of puffy, tightly foamy, and somewhat rocky beige head, which leaves some consistent coral/honeycomb lace around the glass as it genially recedes.

It smells of lightly roasted pale malt, real vanilla, a bit of wet ash, some earthy nuttiness, and rather mild leafy and floral green hop bitters. The taste is more softly toasted and grainy malt, a hint of bready caramel, some ephemerally fruity yeastiness, a fading damp smokiness, and still plain earthy, leafy, and floral noble hops.

The carbonation is fairly unobtrusive in its understated frothiness, the body a wet behind the ears medium weight, and milquetoast smooth. It finishes with a nice zingy leafy hoppiness to complement the sturdy and stoic, yet not all that, um, well, blackened, pale malt.

Overall, a nice pub drinker, I would imagine, the darkness well rendered unto the base pilsner. I had to forgo this one during my time spent at the actual establishment, but am glad to have had the chance to enjoy it as takeout.

This beer poured a dark mahogany, copper color, not quite as black as I was expecting. Short head that faded quickly with no appreciable lace. The smell was mainly malt, maybe a touch of smoke. The flavor has a very malty base, some nuttiness. Much more on the sweet side, not much hop or bitterness, even in the finish.
Medium towards full body, long lasting finish of flavor. Another enjoyable example of one on my personal favorite styles.

Banff Ave was at last year's BeerFest where I got to try a couple different selections, and have been anxiously waiting for another chance to get back out to the brewpub.

Appearance- Pours a dark chestnut brown with half a finger width of bubbly head.

Smell- Roasted malts, grains, nutty aromas, light vanilla

Taste- Pretty much the same as the aromas but has more of a bitterness to it.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Has a nice smoothness to the body.

Overall- An agreeable and enjoyable Schwarzbier by Banff Avenue. The flavours are kept simple and the bitterness is just right.

This beer poured a dark copper color, with a small head that didnt last very long. The smell was a bit weak, but of malts. The flavor was very malty, and therefore a bit sweet. The flavor was strongt and stayed on the palette for a while. Overall a very good overall beer, very enjoyable.

One of my absolute favourites. The mixture of dark and chocolate malt, great appearance and substantial finish make this beer very easy to drink. I have tried this fresh on tap, in bottles, and in a growler. It is very consistent - a lovely representation of the intended style.
