I finally got the chance to try this after hearing many good reviews from friends. It didn't disappoint! I got a growler filled at Growl Movement in Keizer, Oregon.

When I poured it into a tulip there was a 1 finger cream colored head. The liquid is hazy, honey, amber/orange in color with good retention and lacing.

The smell was incredible! All of the best sweet, hoppy aromas I look for in a dIPA. Citrus, tropical fruit, sweet spruce needle, and grapefruit dominate the nose while a hint of malt is detectable.

The taste was very similar to the smell. The grapefruit, tropical fruit, and sweet spruce/fir flavors were pronounced, yet there was just enough malt to balance it out.

Not a ton of carbonation, but just enough. The mouthfeel is medium/ full bodied, but not syrupy or oil like.

Overall, this is just a remarkable beer. The aroma and taste offer something more that just a few beers are able to accomplish. Pliny, Hop Stoopid and many other West Coast IPA's are able to get all of the best hop flavors, yet balance them and not feel alcoholic. Hop Venom is able to take it to another level. There is something more about this beer that is hard to describe. The flavors are incredible, but there is almost a sensation or feeling in the mouth and throat about midway through a drink that takes over and accompanies the flavors. At 10%, this is perfectly balanced and drinkable.

Thanks to DCLAguy11 for sharing this one at Wowcoolman's tasting.

Pours a hazy golden-orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and grapefruit juice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with really nice citrus forward hop qualities all around.

Serving type: growler.

Geez, this is a great beer. Awesome look. Sticky white head. Rich, amber body. Juicy, rich, piney, hoppy aroma. The feel is venomous. Something gives this a small bite. Amongst DIPAs, this is the best I have had this year. The best balanced DIPA I have had. Definitely World Class stuff.

From 02/11/14 notes. Big thanks to BeerLawyer85 for sharing a growler of this; thanks Ross, big Want of mine. Poured into my Bell's tulip.

a - Pours a murky, amber-brown color with one inch of off white head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of citrus hops, fruity malts, pine hops, lemon zest, light floral notes, and some light earthy notes. Nice nose, lots of citrus and fruit. Liking the nose a lot.

t - Tastes of citrus hops, fruity malts, light pine hops, earthy notes, bread, grains, spice, and yeast. Taste is good but seems less hoppy than the nose; a step down for me.

m - Medium body and very little carbonation. No bitterness but growler seems to have lost some carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a DIPA that is quite good, though the taste wasn't as hoppy as I was hoping for. Easy to drink, but I'd like to try it again, preferably on tap. Worth seeking out.

EDIT: 04/16/14: Had another growler of this and it was much better. Awesome piney and citrusy nose which was great. Bumping nose up to a 4.5

Growler shared by Todd. Served in a DryHop taster glass.

A - White foam settles to a cap, leaving behind ample splotchy lacing. Transparent amber body. Looks like a DIPA should.

S - I was expecting a hyper-attenuated West Coast DIPA, but this is far more 'Mid-Westian' to my palate. Dank, piney, and slightly earthy hops, with notes of grapefruit and a bit of tropical fruit are balanced by caramel and icing sugar maltiness. Alcohol is well-hidden.

T - The taste a similarly enjoyable mix of grapefruit and orange peel hops, sweet tropical fruits, and sugary malts that verge to the browner end of the scale. There's an odd astringency in the finish that I don't totally enjoy mixed in with the moderate bitterness.

M - Pleasant, moderate carbonation. Chewy, medium-full body, with good heft for the listed 8.9%. Slightly dry in the finish, with some light alcohol warming that lingers.

D - A nice beer, but I can think of quite a few DIPAs I'd rather drink. Perhaps there's some batch variation to this. Eminently drinkable, other than the slightly off finish. However, I found myself reaching for the Notorious Triple throughout the evening, and it's a rarity for me to prefer a Triple IPA to a Double IPA.

On tap at CBC 2016. Citrus and tropical fruit hops, on top of a nice malty body. Soft and refreshing.
