Drank on tap at Toronado, Seattle, WA
Served in a pint glass

The deep, crimson-amber body was topped by a near finger-tall crop of tight, eggshell colored foam. Outstanding lacing. A thin blanket coated the glass and lasted until the beer was finished.

The nose was pleasant but definitely more subtle than I anticipated. Citrusy hop notes were matched by a sweet, robust maltiness. Mix of caramel and doughy malts. Somewhat bready. There was a subtle spicy quality as well.

The flavor profile was solid but definitely much sweeter than I anticipated. Caramel malts came through big time on the front end. Somewhat doughy and bready. The hops really kicked in mid-palate. Citrusy hops. Loads of candied orange peel. Slightly spicy. Some rind-like notes appeared on the back end. The beer finished moderately bitter with notes of pine sap and rind-like pithiness. A mix of sweet malts and bitter hops lingered after the swallow.

The mouthfeel was solid. Medium bodied for the style. Creamy and supple. The liquid contained a fine, subtle effervescence that turned slick and smooth on the palate.

Hope Venon IPA is a tasty beer, but it reminded me more of an imperial red ale than a typical double IPA. This was super sweet on the front end and on the finish, almost to the point of being cloying.

Poured from a growler into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium to dark coppery amber with a half finger white head the good retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, citrus, piney hops with some good dankness, tropical fruit and orange citrus, nice. Flavor follows with light caramel malt, dank, piney and lightly citrus hops, orange family citrus, light guava and papaya. Finishes with resinous, herbal piney and dank hops with pleasant hops and mild caramel lingering. Medium bodied with light creaminess and good mouth feel. A classic West Coast style IPA with great fresh tasting hops that would not be out of place in a fresh hopped ale. The aroma has distinct caramel, but the in the taste the malt seems quite neutral, allowing the hops to take the whole stage, although a light toffee flavor shows up in the finish. A very well made imperial IPA with a great hop bill. Deserves its reputation.
