on tap at kaos pizza on pearl street. pours a rich oily black color with a nice lively thick tan head. smells like a black ipa, with plenty of resiny hops and heavily toasted grains. flavor is way more balances, more like a porter in flavor and feel, but this is a pretty big beer here. feel is full bodied, appropriate carbonation, and a slightly bitter rich finish. one of the better beers ive had from strange, i really like this one. went well with a wild mushroom pesto thin crust pizza. more drinkable than i just described, you could enjoy a fair few of these without much trouble

Deep, deep brown. As dark as beer gets, i think. By the time i got my pint, I still had a good, thick 1/4" of whitish head. Sheeting lace sticking all the way down, this one isn't a disappointer in the looks department.
Smells immediately of burnt malt and citrusy hops. Some earthy, piney notes to the hop character. It's a bit hard to focuswith the music and chatter. Lots of burnt toffee. Pretty clean, just a bit of red apple fruitiness. Maybe a touch of plum or underripe, bitter cherrry. The hops dominate fully. This is India Black Ale if such a style exists.
The flavor opens up bluntly with acquired tastes, which is what this beer is all about. Hop bitterness, burnt malt bitterness, and not much in the way of forgiveness. You really have to love dark roasted malt and strong hops, which are probably the two most unappealing characteristics of beer to the novice. That being said, there is a sweet, caramel underpinning to the brew that carries through into the finish. It's just enough to keep me sipping easily, while enjoying the strong, resinous hop flavor. The bitterness does settle down quite a bit as my palate adjusts, but remains present. My only complaint, I guess, is that the body could feel a bit bulkier. The carbonation feels just right, bubbly but smooth enough, but the body doesn't quite match the assertiveness of the flavor. When people say dark beer is "heavy", you know it's not, but deep inside you'd like it to be. At least I would. This would be my "perfect" session beer otherwise. Super assertive, secretly delicious, and all about adult tastes.
I do have to say that this must be Strange's most challenging beers. There's not much to save you from the burnt, semisweet malt flavor and grapefruit hops. Very clean and well made, but lacking in approachability. I really like it, but it's certainly not for the soft of tongue.

I had this one on tap at Strange Brewing this afternoon. Listed as a black pale ale. Poured a dark brown color with a little white head. Aromas of earthy hops, chocolate and roasted malt. Medium bodied and very drinkable, with flavors of roasted malt, hops and chocolate.
