Appearance is dark chestnut with a thin ring of tan foam that leaves some spotty lacing. The aroma is at once smoky, hints of leather and chocolate then creep in. The taste is also smoky, with some vanilla and honey. Chilie heat builds up slowly and is cumulative. Very little indication of the high ABV. Very interesting and complex.

Thanks to CaptCleveland for this extra, rescued from the back of the fridge for a drinking game: sip whenever I see a non-white person at the RNC Convention. 22 oz. bottle split with my wife…& I’m getting really thirsty.

Dark, dark red with a dirty halo on top. The nose is dominated by honey with a distant whiff of leather. Sweet.

Mayan Maybe Not should not be drunk outside, lest you end up with a swarm of drunken bees (though you could hope they were happy drunks). The sweet malts sidles up to the honey to present a profile that makes me want dance to some NIN. Beneath the invigoratingness is just a touch of chile heat that builds slowly, amber waves of grain, touch of vanilla. The heat starts to stick around. My superpower taste buds detect no chocolate. No detectable alcohol + egregious amounts of sugar = easy drinker, despite the ABV.

Well, I can’t wait until 4:00 AM, so I’m calling the game on account of lack of pigmentation. Nothing earth-shattering hear, but an appropriate use of chiles that keeps my anal seal intact. Good brew.

Thanks, Chad!

Really looking forward to this one. I’ve grown into the fact that Old Ales are one of my favorite styles of beer. Pretty soon I’ll go back and confirm that for sure, but pretty sure I’m correct. Thrown in the fact that 404 Scytale was phenomenal and I’m hoping this can be somewhere near the 4.20-4.30 range.

Poured a dark, mahogany color with two fingers of tan, frothy head. Good deal of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Great spiderweb, foamy lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled an initial whiff of spicy malts and imperial stouts, reminding me of a Mexican Chocolate stout. Specifically got jalapeno, black pepper, chili peppers and hints of cinnamon for the spices, and cocoa nibs, milk chocolate, black coffee beans, roasted toffee and chocolate syrup for the stout part. This is great on the nose. (Smell - 4.50)

Taste wasn’t quite as good, but still delicious. First taste seemed to go all the way through my body. Got milk chocolate, dark cocoa nibs, some kind of combo of jalapeno and habanero spices, probably habanero, black peppery spices, fudge, chocolate syrup, vanilla, roasted malts, molasses and toasted toffee. Spiciness wore off somewhat as it went down. Fantastic. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming, slightly spicy finish. (Feel - 4.50)

This was just a really good beer. Such a smooth old ale. (Overall - 4.25)

Pours a dark brown, not much in the way of foam. The smell is cocoa, vanilla, roasty malt and just a hint of the peppers. First sip, cocoa dominates blended well with vanilla, followed by a sweet honey drip that ultimately mashes with the jalapeño peppers. I am a big fan of Habanero in food, but am happy that it's barely present here. The heat of the jalapeño is on the other hand not overpowering and again blends very nicely with the honey. The feel is on the thin side, but still pleasant with the sequence of flavors, and for a 10.5 ABV, the heat from the booze is present but not overly.

I got this mainly for the cocoa/pepper, was pleasantly surprised with the touch of honey. This is probably something that would be a bit more appropriate in the winter.
