Have had quite a few iterations of this beer, 385, 404, 808, and this one. Pours black, brown head, 1/2" deep, sure is a pretty beer, jet black with brown trim, slightly below average retention, but overall, quite the looker the first few seconds after the pour. The aroma is a deep brownie fudge like chocolate sensation draped into some heavy bourbon and wood. Comes across as big with some mild caramel behind it.

The taste has a mild sweetness that helps smooth out on obvious big beer with a hefty amount of roasted malt to it. Doesn't come across as bitter. Substantial bourbon character that isn't as hot with the alcohol as one would expect, does a good job there. The oak is mild. The caramel is another smoothing character mouth feel wise.

This is a solid alternative to most bourbon barrel beers in this strength range like BCS or SHIT. Its also cheaper. I've seen them as cheap at $14 at Winco. This beer has cut down on my purchase of Eclipse big time. While Eclipse EC 12 is phenomenal and slightly better, it isn't twice as good, whereas its price is twice as high as Scytale.

Pours black with a finger of khaki head. Head retention is poor. Aroma is an incredible blend of roasted and toasted malts and bourbon. The mix is set to 50/50, letting each side build and rebound off each other. Light toffee and caramel notes. Flavor profile is a touch of boozy bourbon at the front with roasted and toasted malts showing up afterwards. It has a toffee, caramel, and biscuit malt finish. While the bourbon kicks off the flavor, it also comes back for a second round as the beer's flavors linger and decay long after a sip. Nice balance, but it leans slightly sweeter and boozier than the aroma suggests. Mouth feel is medium-thick, with a velvety, semi-grainy texture that keeps this drinking like a hearty barrel aged beer should. Overall, a straight shooter imperial stout that has spent time in bourbon barrels. The bourbon helps round and mellow out the malts, while the malts help to support and keep the bourbon from becoming too boozy. Splendid display of balance in this one.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve 10-oz. snifter
From: Great Basin Brewing in Sparks, Nev.
Price: $18.95
Purchased: May 12, 2017
Consumed: Dec. 16, 2017
Reviewed as: Russian Imperial Stout
Misc.: 2017 release

Was really looking forward to this one. Gave the 404 Scytale a 4.32 on Dec. 28, 2015 (actually reviewed on Dec. 14, 2015) and the 385 Scytale a 4.25 on Dec. 26, 2016 (actually reviewed on Dec. 9, 2016). Hoping this one will be just as good. Great Basin doesn’t do a lot of things well, but it nails its big boozy beers. On the bottle it read, “Our fourth expedition into the deepest and darkest recesses of craft beer continues with our release of 412 Scytale. After completing its primary fermentation, the Brewmaster sealed un-aged imperial stout into freshly-emptied bourbon barrels. There, it matured and grew in complexity as the charred oak imbued the pitch black elixir with layer upon layer of decadent features. Wrap your head around each nuance as you uncover aromas of dark stone fruits, spice, and vanilla alongside sweet tastes of bready biscuit, fig, honey, oak, and roasted chocolate until it finishes with a lingering caramel and bourbon on the palate. This much is certain: this is one 412 day journey you won’t soon forget.”

Poured a pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of fizzy tan head. Slow moving bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Outstanding spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled so damn smooth. Got milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, smooth bourbon, vanilla, oaky, musky leather, wood, crayon, trash, dark fruits, fig and chocolate milk. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted better than the nose. Very sweet. Got milk chocolate syrup, sweet caramel, vanilla, musky leather, toasted oak, toffee, bourbon, dark fruits, figs, lingering warming spice, honey, light char wood, molasses, dark semi-sweet chocolate morsels, cocoa and lightly toasted coconut flakes. Boozy, but not 13.1 pct. boozy. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming finish. (Feel - 4.50)

This was awesome once again. Something is just a tad off and I couldn’t put my finger on it. By off, I man from getting to The Bruery or even AleSmith level. Love this though. (Overall - 4.25)

This is the best brewery that you never heard of for BA Stouts. No adjuncts, no nonsense. I am on the East coast, and took a chance on them during a trade (it's always nice to find those hidden gems), and I have subsequently sought every rendition of Scytale after that. This offering did not disappoint.

Pours dark with a mocha head. Smell is barrel, chocolate, and dark fruits. Nice lacing.

Taste is FANTASTIC. Barrel and dark fruits dominate, with a burnt sugar finish. I absolutely love this.

Mouth-feel is medium. Definitely smooth...almost an Old Ale type feel.

Final verdict... awesome. Do yourself a favor and try this one out. It is just a great, straight-up, barrel aged stout.

Pours a dark brown with a slight reddish tint and two inches of dark tan head. Lots of bourbon, caramel malts, toffee, milk chocolate, roasted malts, oak, light leather. Very boozy but the taste is less harsh than the nose. Thick full body and low to moderate carbonation.

Overal this is strong but I like it; it reminds me of a Bruery anniversary beer, which I consider a good thing.

Never heard of this Brewery before. Found it on Tavour. I compare a lot of stouts to Bourbon County or KBS. This guy destroyed them. Smell, maple, coffee, chocolate, brown sugar. Taste, sweet brown sugar, coffee, licorice. Not sickening sweet but it's there. No head on this guy on the pour. But at 13.1, expected. I'd seek this guy out. Honestly. Really REALLY good beer. I'm drunk. Abv you can't taste. Hid it REALLY well. Hats off Great Basin!

This was an outstanding beer IMO. I'm relatively new to the beer rating scene but this one had great balance, nice "boozy" taste but not overpowering for a 13.1% ABV. Look was very black with a nice creamy tan head. Glad I got my hands on 2 of these solid beers, it will be hard to wait to pop open the next one!

L: on tap in snifter almost jet black oil with a receding creamy thin head.
S: charred whiskey , vanilla coffee beans , sweet n chocolaty
T: a very well balanced of vanilla up front with a balanced chocolate ending!
F: well balanced
O: imho this just might be the best scytale out of the whole series! The jack daniels that it aged in did this stout wonders! I think it just might be better than 808 and even many other ba stouts out there. I attended bottle logic week and had fundamental forces! Well this is up there with it! Not hyping this at all just a str8 up honest opinion! It's a Shame that Great Basin gets no street value trade credit oh well more for me, lil FYI for you all, don't sleep on this and i will not be trading this for any local joe ba stouts. This is worthy of trades for bottle logic Beers like fo, leche , and other top stouts. Good luck grabbing this.
