A new spin on an old style. This deceptively dark beer has only a slight roasted flavor complimenting the caramel malt and citrus hop flavor expected of an India Pale Ale.

Poured a black, khaki tan color with 1-to-2 fingers of head when I got it. Spiderweb foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Great retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled hazelnut, caramel, toffee, floral hops, butterscotch and some toast. (Smell - 4.00)

Tasted toffee, caramel, hazelnut, cocoa and toasted butterscotch. Once again, the temperature was too cold. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This might have been the best of the night, although one of them had to be. It could also have been because it was the fourth one I rated on the night, one more than my maximum. (Overall - 3.75)

Ordered this twice over the past weekend. Each time it was served in a standard pint glass at Great Basin's new Brewery & Restaurant in Reno, NV. The following review is a compilation of the notes taken during each session.

Appearance: Arrived at the table with a half inch of tan, sticky, foam on top. Body was predominantly black with brown edges. Head slowly descended to a tight halo, and remained that way for the duration of the tasting. Tons of webby lacing all the way down. Looked great for the style!

Smell: Oily, herbal hops, dark roasted coffee, whole wheat toast, and toffee. A nice combination of aromas, though it lacked complexity.

Taste: Tons of roasted malt and hop bitterness in this one. Dark roasted coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, and piney hops crashed down on my taste buds with each sip. My girlfriend - a blossoming hop head - absolutely loved this beer. I greatly enjoyed it the first time, but thought it was too intense during the second trial. That's how it goes with most hop bombs though, right? You've just got to be in the mood for one. As the beer warmed, caramel and toffee emerged and the harsh bitterness softened up a bit. Alcohol and char were still the dominant flavors in the aftertaste though. Bold and interesting, to say the least.

Mouthfeel: Bitter, dry, full-bodied, and coarse. Hop resins coated the palate and lingered deep into the aftertaste. Moderately carbonated. Hard to handle at times.

Drinkability: Flavorful and bold, but a bit too intense in my opinion. If you're up for hefty doses of roasted barley and hops, this is the beer for you.

Friend brought this back from the new Reno location.

Pours a nice dark black color with a good off white head.

Aromas are very pungent, sticky, resin like, earthy, and with some pine notes as well.

Taste starts off with a chocolate malt flavor. Beer is slightly creamy, then the hops kick in. A slight dry hop note, and bitter pine resin on the crisp finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth and crisp, but a touch thin, the body fades just a bit.

Very good drinkable black IPA. Could use a little more body, but that's my only nit pick, this is a very tasty beer, we had no problem killing the growler.
