Brewed by:
Tenaya Creek Brewery
Nevada, United States

Style: American Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.40%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Old Jackalope Barleywine Style Ale: Whats sealed in this bottle is only heard of in myths. Its so rare in fact, we have used a magical seal that only opens with an "Abracadabra," or the bottle opener hanging from your keys. This rich and complex ale uses a variety of malts and hops to balance what we think is one ultimate beer. Share it with friends, savor it with colleagues, or stash it away for a future occasion. This ale will keep for months, or years if you manage to resist the temptation.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Copper orange with a 1.5 finger head.
S: A big nose, with toffee, some citrus/pine, and spice. Shows a nice hop/malt balance.
T: Too much esters/booze for my tastes. Brown sugar, figs, and a hop resin finish.
M: Full-bodied, rich but a bit cloying.
O: I could see where many would like this. It's solid, just too big/boozy for my tastes.

I really try to shy away from fresh barleywines, they are sometime hot and unrefined; however, give me an aged barleywine life is great. The server urged me to try the barleywine, told me that it is different than most barleywines. Begrudgingly, I ordered the barleywine. The beer is a medium amber color with orange copper hues. The head is one finger off white and a typical fast dissipating head from the high alcohol. Little carbonation is visible from the sides of the glass.
Toasted malt, caramel, citrus, toffee, floral hops, grapefruit, bready, touch of pine, and yeasty.
Heavy toasted malt, caramel, citrus, toffee, floral, pine, alcohol, biscuits, crackers, grapefruit, herbal, grass, and some yeasty notes
Full body, alcohol warming a touch hot, medium carbonation, some astringency, and a full finish.
A solid well-built beer it is more of American Strong Ale. The beer needed a bigger malt structure, to me it was not what I would expect as a barleywine. The server was right it was different than most barleywines.

22oz brown bomber with a bottled on date.

LOOK: Massive sticky head, dark amber.

SMELL: Spicy, figgy, alcoholic, sweet, caramel, toasted malt, dried grass, floral.

TASTE: Creamy, potent, sweet, hoppy, caramel, resin, citric rind, rustic grain, ripe figs, yeast, warming alcohol.

A solid barleywine from first sniff to the last sip. Balanced though the hoppiness resonates for a good while. For its size the alcohol is still pretty manageable. This one is worth the hunt.

A: Golden orange tending towards brown with two finger off white head that lasted a good while with moderate lacing.

S: Sweet caramel mixed with floral hops.

T: Plenty of hop bitterness up front, and sweet caramel and butterscotch malts in the back.

M: Medium body with a nice sweet finish.

O: Good barley wine. I liked it enough to pick up a bottle at Whole Foods to bring home.

Super hoppy and spicy nose with a nice, white head. The taste is conflicting...lots of sweet malt (as expected in a BW) and an overpowering amount of bitterness that hangs around long after your previous sip. Maybe this should be called an imperial brown IPA?

White wax topped 22oz bottle from VegasHopHead (thanks Anthony!). Bottled 4/2/13. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours an opaque orange hued russet with almost two full fingers of fluffy off-white head. Nice retention as a quarter finger cap lingers, leaving large sheets of lace.

Smells of nondescript sweet fruit, old orange peel, slight pine and caramel.

An interesting blend of flavors. Caramel, citrus rind, toffee, pine, pears, plums, bready malt, woody and earthy notes, raisins and a blanket of booze that creeps in and amongst the other flavors.

An almost chewy, medium-heavy feel with moderate carbonation. Long, bitter sweet finish with caramel, pine, citrus and dark fruit.

While there may be nothing to really elevate this above the herd, Old Jackalope isn't bad at all. I think I'm drinking this during an in-between phase where there are still hop notes clinging on that have not faded to let all the malts truly work their magic. Not hunt-worthy for my tastes but a solid brew.

2014, tastes ok when cold, off after taste as it warms up, does not taste like a barleywine

Dark Amber pour with beige head and very goo lace; sweet malt and candy yam nose;caramel candy with a hop bittering on the back end; medium mouthfeel with a sugar beet tongue coating; overall this is boozy caramel candy with a lite bitter finish.
