I am CANently Knee Deep in the midst of CANother brewery horizontal, CANtinuing to winnow away at the backlog here at Chez Woody. This is my third of five, but my last until after my shift later today. I have found employment with/at USPS & this will be my first day at my home office following 2.5 days of indoc in Harrisburg.

From the CAN: "Fine Craft Beers"; "Man Juice Mandarin Orange India Pale Ale"; "50 IBU"; "Ale brewed with Sweet Orange Peel and flavored with natural Mandarin Orange Juice. Mandarins locally grown by Sunset Ridge Fine Fruits, Newcastle, CA."

I Crack!ed open the vent on this latest CAN & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. It formed a finger of foamy, soapy, rocky, eggshell-white head before falling away to wisps. 8=( Color was a beautiful Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, leading to a visit from The Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon & Croesus, all clamoring for a taste. Nose had a pronounced sweet orange quality & had they not identified it for us as "mandarin", I would have guessed "CANgerine". Mouthfeel was on the thin side, not watery, but lacking for the Style. The taste was really nicely executed. It was definitely orange-y, but there was enough of a hoppy bitterness to keep me satiated. It was nowhere near as sweet as the nose had led me to expect. Mmm. This was a really pleasant, easy-drinking beer, really nice on a warm late-Spring day. Finish was semi-dry, but for me, as long as it was not sweet, I was down with it. YMMV.

On-tap at Chupacabra Taproom, Mesa, AZ:

Pours hazed deep golden with a thin wispy head that leaves minimal lacing.

The smell is like orange juice with a hint of an herbal hop touch.

The taste is of fresh-squeezed orange juice. Herbal bitter touch in the finish. Nice malt backing makes it very smooth.

An IPA with a strong orange juice character. Mandarin oranges almost overwhelm, but it still has enough going on otherwise. If you like oranges and IPA's, certainly worth trying!

16 oz. Can
Canned On: 09/20/2018

Poured into a tulip a pretty nice hazy dark golden orange color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger plus off-white head, which also leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, mandarin), piney. The taste is hoppy, malty, with a nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, mandarin), piney. Medium body, ABV is hidden pretty nicely, with a nice little dry/bitter finish. Overall, a tasty brew.

Poured from can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed orange-amber color with a one finger head of fizzy white foam. The head has a light level of retention, fading moderately quickly to leave a tiny bit of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of orange juice mixed with the aroma of orange rind. Along with these smells comes some lighter smells of hay and yeast.
Taste – The taste begins with a moderately strong showing of sweeter orange citrus hop supported by a lighter bready taste. As the taste advances the sweeter citrus dries out a little bit as some tastes of orange rind come to the tongue. With a surge of orange citrus hop at the end, one is left with a rather orange juicey, moderately hoppy taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is slightly thinner for a 6.5% abv IPA with a carbonation level that is average. For the citrus hop and OJ taste the slightly thinner body was rather nice and made with a very easy drinking brew.
Overall – A rather tasty orange citrus IPA with a good easy drinking feel. Nothing super outstanding, but a good one to try and go to from time to time.

A thanks to the captain of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of citrus, light malts. Taste is of orange peels, little else, moderate bitterness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall ain't bad, but this brewer makes much better IPA's.

While I enjoy the beer from Knee Deep, the only reason I bought this IPA was for my, just so I could tell him, "dude you are drinking my man juice!" Childish, hell yeah. But good fun. As for the beer, it pours a crisp, clean amber with a 1-finger head that holds form and with very little lacing retention. The smell is dominated by ripe orange rind and other citrus fruits. Some minimal bitterness sneaks in, as the citrus fades. Taste is full on citrus up front, as the juice subsides, the hops quickly jump in for a moment of bitterness. Still a fine drinking, every day beer. Cheers!

Can to goblet.

Look: straw yellow color, clear, above average white head which fades to a thin film. Decent retention.
Aroma: orange jumps out at you upon pouring. Also some grass or hay floating around.
Taste: metallic and citrus hoppyness. Tart orange late.
Feel: light to medium body. Medium carbonation. Touch of creamyness. Slight pasty feel in finish.

Not anywhere near my favorite citrusy ale, but for the money this was amazing. 4pack for $2.70. Couldn't pass that up as a nice summer option. Probably discounted b/c of the name which is a little creepy; I do get the Mandarin orange reference, but I couldn't help think of the intended scandalous connotation.

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface, a narrow collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of orange citrus and orange zest are present in the nose. As the beer warms up, the smell becomes more semblance of an orange creamsicle.
T: The taste follows the smell and mostly has orange creamsicle flavors.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting beer that starts out smelling like a traditional IPA but then transitions over to something closer to an orange creamsicle.

While this beer is exactly as advertised, it strays just a bit too far into the fruit for me to love it. Flavor is great, would just prefer a bit for of an IPA

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Canned March 21st 2018.

Exceptional clarity. Beaming and super clear looking body color, of a bronze gold that shimmes. Lots of nice rising pin head carbonation, meating to a frothy fistfull off white head. Soapy lacing, and island creamy top, gorgegous looking beer.

Real nice aroma. Fruited juicy and zesty Christmas orange mixing with touches of almost creamsicle sweetness. Hints with a wondeful herbal component somewhere between mint and black tea. Large amounts of herbs and flirts with dank but more sweet perfume like aromas.

Palate goes relatively straight forward. Less creamy sensing and a bit of toasty malt flavors, mixing with more hop astringency. Touches large herbal mint and sharp orange qualities. Has a bit of white flour and toast finish, mixing with large amounts of green mint and almost lime like herbal qualities. Very clean, but with larger fruity tones and not so much juice.

Pretty good solid fruited IPA.

L: Poured from a can to a pint glass. Had a golden-amber color and a clear consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, somewhat long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A very nice aroma of hops, citrus, malt, pine, and a floral quality.

T: Tasted of a mild amount of malt (mostly noticeable in the finish), lots of citrus (a bunch of the advertised mandarin orange), a good shot of hops, a tinge of pine, and a bit of the floral quality. An interesting, light, and sweet flavor that is quite likable. Very hoppy, fruity, and tasty.

F: A well-carbonated beer with a slightly slick finish. Light-bodied.

O: Not a perfect IPA, but this is definitely a easy to drink beer. Certainly drinkable.

A decent drinkable citrus style IPA. The look is great and the nose is fantastic, but the taste was a little lacking for me. A definite hit of tangerine/citrus but a little too much bitterness at the end. Almost like it was overcompensating for the tangerine and overdid it. I think grapefruit is a better fruit when pairing with IPA...just my opinion.

Pours a chillhazed & effervescent amber with a thumb of eggshell colored head. Decent head retention & lacing

S: Orange peel & juice

T: Follows the nose, pronounced bitterness, almost like orange zest, some orange sweetness up front. A mix of bitterness & sweet with a little bready dryness as well. Finishes with tangerine & pomelo

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation, nice balance

Canned 2 months ago, will try again if I can find it fresher. Drinkable, but had higher hopes

Canned 1/25/18, consumed 2/28/18

Poured clear golden amber with a huge head that left very little lacing.

Aroma is citrus fruit and dank hops, maybe a bit mild.

Taste is citrus fruit, pine, dank hops - there is sort of an abrupt finish to the citrus.

Mouthfeel is a bit light, strong bitterness.

Overall, this is okay but doesn't even come close to their own Citra Pale Ale for orangy goodness. Like with BP brews, I keep finding that adding fruit to your IPA actually detracts from the overall flavor and balance. It's okay there are maybe 6 or 7 other awesome Knee Deep brews to fall back on so everything will be fine.

12 ounce can - $3.19 at Schoolhouse Beer and Brewing in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a golden-orange body with a head comprised of over an inch of yellow-tinged, loose suds.

Smell: Bitterish orange aroma combining with floral aromatics to give a hint of orange blossom. Lightly grainy pale malt base beneath.

Taste: Pale malted barley, a touch of lightly toasted grains. It's orangey, even zestful, but also a tad citric, as well as slightly floral and resinous. Medium-plus bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Slight, scant oiliness to the overall mouthfeel.

Overall: It'll do!

Draught pour at Woodstocks. Pours a hazy faint orange with a ring of white head that left minimal lacing. Nose as expected is heavy on the orange attributes and became sweeter as it warmed. Taste was a bit unimpressive, matched the nose but a bit faint. Mouthfeel was solid, carbonation slightly high, and the finish very clean and astringent. An interesting beer, but Knee Deep has far better offerings.

On tap at Knee Deep Brewing

A: Pours slightly hazy golden orange with a frothy white head that settles to a thin layer and leaves a little spotty lacing.

S: Tangerine dominates, lemon lime, faint herbal notes, and a little light malt.

T: Tangerine, lemon lime, citrus zest, grassy herbal notes, light malt, and a touch of sweetness. Jets a bit juicy as it warms.

M: A bit on the lighter end of medium body, crisp carbonation.

O: Nice bright refreshing IPA. I've been wanting to get a better idea of what Mandarina Bavaria hops are all about so this was a fun one to try out.
