Very Good
Citra Extra Pale AleCitra Extra Pale Ale
Notes: A single hop, West Coast style American Pale Ale with intense hop flavor and aromas. This is a citrus bomb that has grapefruit and passion fruit aromas with citrus lime flavors.

I write this review instead of using "Hads" to keep track of my tastings so that it can garner sufficient reviews to get a grade.

Pours a clear orange amber with gold highlights and a light pure white head. Nice looking although head fades fast.

Nose starts with an almost saison funkiness but goes to a bit of "smelly" oranges. No other way of putting it but smells a bit like "sweet sweat." Hints of body odor in my beer is not what I'm looking for.

Mouthfeel is medium/thin but quickly forgotten with the giant assertive pine/bark/old bitter grapefruit skin flavor profile.

Flavors are big and bold but just singularly unattractive.

Finish is all bitter pine/earth/old grapefruit skin.

Many thanks to SawDog505 for this bottle! Bottled 11/3/16.

A - Medium copper colored pour with thin creamy head, but dense. Lacing is dense, thick, and sticky. Carbonation is light and steady.

S - Smell has faded quite a bit (my fault for sitting on the bottle this long). Aroma is caramel malt and light citrus grapefruit and a little sticky smelling.

T - Balanced with caramel malt blending into juicy grapefruit and finishes in a sharp grapefruit bitterness with a lightly spicy edge. Bitterness lingers with grapefruit and caramel sweetness.

M - Big medium body, gentle carbonation, a little watery on the finish.

O - This is a nice pale ale, wish I didn't sit on it for so long. (Was saving it for the holidays to share.)

Pours a hazy golden orange with a finger of white head and good lacing.

Nose is intensely pungent. Big astringency with orange, lemon, and mango. Kind of smells like a bag of hops with a touch of malty sweetness added.

Taste follows smell. Citrus and tropical fruits dominate at the front. On the back end there is a dry pine that is very nice followed by the sweetness from the malt.

The body is medium and the carbonation seems to be at the right level. Extremely dry piney aftertaste lingers.

Very good for just a pale ale. Citra is one of the best hops out there and this showcases them well.

We split a bomber, pouring into our Great Lakes pint glasses. It glows a hazy, burnt sienna coloring, sporting a one finger head of foamy, soapy white bubbles. Retention is nice, leaving tails of wispy lacing as it eventually descends into a film. A surprisingly thick haze cuts clarity, but no sediment is otherwise found. Carbonation appears to be mild. The aroma gloriously showcases the star single hop: Citra. We entertain notes of lemon and ginger tea, pale and caramel malt body, zesty grapefruit and tutti-frutti nectary hops, white flour, cantaloupe and honeydew melon, synthetic citric cleaner, rubber cement, tin, apricot jelly, moldy white pear, and smoked toffee sugars. The taste gives much what you’d expect, but with much more salt and much more malt. It opens with thick, nearly overpowering caramel malts, flambéed banana, white wine vinegar, resinous and oily floral and citric hops, chemical perfumes, granular white sugar, and pear syrups, but contracts to a finish of chlorine, sea salt, plastic wrap, vinyl plastics, basement must, green apple acetylaldehydes, more bitter herbal hoppiness, paper towels, and Sprite sugariness. The body is medium to full, and the carbonation is lightly medium. Each sip gives okay slurp and smack, with lesser cream or froth than one would hope. The mouth is left prickled and somewhat coated, but predominantly astringent and chalked. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks easily.

Overall, this drinks more like a double IPA than a single hop pale ale. The malt bill is just so darn heavy with caramel. This makes for a much heavier body than expected, but clears the way for an otherwise clean-drinking and finishing beverage. While you don’t really ease into this one as nicely as the premier pale ales, the basicity in the single-hopping is nice. You just, unfortunately, don’t get enough robustness to tell the full story of the citra hop, and the beer is left ultimately standard. Knee Deep has proven what they can do with hops time and time again, but here they seem to be jumping aboard the gimmick train and offering an underdone product.

BOD 11/4/15. Pours a clear gold with a bit of amber. Outstanding head volume, world class lacing and retention.

Outstanding nose of grapefruit, passion fruit and a touch of lime over pale malt with a strong dose of grainy biscuit.

Heavy light body that is smooth with a hint of oiliness. Superb carbonation level that is in balance with the body. The middle has a bit of effervescence and the finish is prickly.

The flavor profile is quite outstanding and allows the Citra hop to shine. Intensity is appropriate for the style, as is bitterness. Balance is world class. It begins with grapefruit then flows into a moderate middle bitterness. Passion fruit emerges post middle bitterness over a fairly sweet base (cracker biscuit) with notes of caramel. Towards the finish, a lime influence emerges creating a nice contrast with passion fruit. The finish is a slow fade of slightly sweet zest and lime with a slight dryness coupled with an earthy dankness.

Thanks to Phelps for the generous extra. 22oz bottle. Pours nearly clear, amber color, with a small, slowly settling white head and decent lace. Nice aroma is very much citrus hops forward; mostly getting orange, lemon, and grapefruit, with a noticeable grainy malt note behind it.

The flavor is also pretty nice, if straightforward and uncomplex; lots of citrus, tropical fruit from the Citra hops, a fairly high level of bitterness that threatens to overwhelm the flavor a bit, and a decent bready malt backbone underneath. Leans a bit more towards an IPA than a pale.

Medium to a little thin in body, with assertive carbonation and a crisp, dry finish. Refreshing and clean-drinking. Not bad, maybe not exceptional, but overall fairly tasty.

Beer pours a clear golden hued amber with an off white head that settles as a cap in my tulip. Nice retention and lacing thus far.

Nose is candied hops with some notes of banana. Might just be the intense citrus but I'm definitely getting some banana. Nice sweet bready presence underneath the citra hops. Some underlying lemon notes. Definitely one of the more interesting apa aromas i've experienced.

Taste follows the nose off the bat with that candied malty sweetness that verges on banana then takes a slightly bitter nose dive and finishes with some vegetal hops.

Mouthfeel is creamy thin and well carbonated but finishes watery.

Overall, super interesting fun nose that features the citra hop well with complementing pale malts. The taste just leaves a lot to be desired, like quite a few single hop ales. Fun experiment tho.
