A: A deep amber. This beer pours a slightly unimpressive single finger of head. A vigorous pour may result in two. I must say that, somehow, the beautiful amber that this beer presents somehow manages to scream "HOPS."
S: The nasal senses were overwhelmed from the initial opening of the beer; an escape of the freshest of vapors revealed a beer arguably reeking of those (slightly), yet incredibly enjoyable skunky, intensely citrusy hops only found in the most vigourous dpa's and the finest tpa's.: grapefruits, citrus, oily hop smells, followed by a startling, yet pleasant, earthy hop smell. Another call-out must be made to the grapefruit and citrus.
T: The nasal cavity does not lie. This beer slams you across the face with the most vigorous hop presentation you have ever seen; the hops are quickly dissipated with a paralleled explosion of malty backbone that just barely manages to tame those wild citrusy earthy hops. I must repeat, with a second sip, that the malty backbone is just strong enough to tame the hops. Really, it's sensual, feeling those hops slammed with a great earthy malt.
M: There is a tremendous mouthfeel. I can almost feel myself struggling to tame this beer, to wrestle it into submission. The 11.5% alcohol content suddenly becomes apparent with the slightly heavy consistency of this beer. I may just be overloaded with the complexity of this one, but I would have to make a strong case of the assertiveness: an after-bite of hops lasts for literally minutes.
OVERALL: This beer was completely enjoyable. I really expected no less from a TPA, but I must say I was surprised by the way this beer made a TPA...do-able. Just because of that quick, earthy, malty, backbone, this beer was actually a pleasant presentation of that beautiful hop medly found in only the finer beers. I would be curious to find what the bros thought of it...I would consider it world-class!!
Summary: An incredible WHOP of hops followed by the quickest, maltiest backbone that barely manages to tame them. A lingering aftertaste of those grapefruit/citrusy hops. 11.5%.

Note: this beer drinks well with sweeter/saltier foods. I had a sip after a fresh chocolate chip cookie and I was pleasantly surprised!

Lovely bright gold-orange with a finger of white head. Smells like cat pee and sweet pale malts with some sweet yellow grapefruit. Taste is better with lots of that yellow grapefruit and big pale malts. Fairly sweet, good stuff.

Bottled 9/16/14: Pours very hazy dark gold color with a 2 finger foamy beige head that faded slowly and left good spotty lacing.

Wow, the smell is strong and hoppy, with a very pungent citrus blast from 6 inches away from the glass; nose is a mix of grapefruit, orange, tangerine, pineapple, mango and citrus hops combined with piney hops, caramel, brown sugar, herbs and fresh juicy hop oil. A great nose that lets the grains/malts come through more as it warms, with just enough sweetness to suppress the alcohol and only let it peek through in small puffs.

Taste is very hoppy, but has a lot more balance and malt presence; flavors include grapefruit, orange, tangerine, pineapple, lemon, all things squeezed out of citrus hops, caramel, piney hops, brown sugar, buttered wheat bread, herbs and light spices like pepper and tea leaf, biscuit and fresh juicy hop oil – the hops seem very fresh and wet hopped, giving it an oily texture at times. No heat from the high ABV and less aggressive hop attack than expected from a triple IPA, but this was very tasty and a lot smoother than I expected. Bitterness was moderate and the alcohol caught up as I made my way through the bomber, but it went down easy and was complex with enough malt backbone to make for a well crafted imperial IPA. The ABV was more pronounced in the second pour, but still tolerable.

Mouthfeel is chewy and heavy, but it’s smooth like velour and really slides down easy considering the density and high ABV. This was a slow sipper in order to try and maximize the flavor and let the warming bring out more dynamics, but I could have very easily pounded this like a 60 Minute IPA. Overall a really great beer that lived up to the hype and represents big, bold West Coast IPA’s quite well. I’ll definitely seek this out as it’s a top notch triple IPA.
