Canned 10/17/19

Appearance - Pours near black with some ruddish, cola brown edging. Tan, frothy two-finger width head shows good retention before dying down to a thin, broken layer of surface suds, thickening up around the edge of the glass. Nice lacing, with broken sheeting, some spotting, and lines.

Smell - Citrus, faint roast, and a touch of booze.

Taste - Hops smack the mouth first with citrus; grapefruit, lesser tangerine and a touch of orange. Mid-taste brings a noticeable boozy bite before light hints of roast, rye spice and faint chocolate come into play. Finish brings some grapefruit pith bitterness, leaving an aftertaste that's mostly bitter and with some residual alcohol flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with fair carbonation. Drinks slick and easy before a dry, slightly boozy finish.

Overall - Nice imperial black IPA, but it does have that big boozy bite mid-taste. Not totally unexpected for a 9.5% brew, but it does tend to detract from what might otherwise be a very, very good Imperial BIPA.

Bottle Date 2.1.16

Second offering from Knee Deep in so many nights

eyes...
definitely dark, a nice cap of brown foam rises about 2 fingers, lacing and head structure is spot on, not much else to describe but that doesn't mean this is not good

nose...
peaty malt, slight hints of smoke, hops are subdued but can be sought out, some dark honey

taste etc...
nice mouth feel, creamy and the carbonation is almost nitro esque, there is mild coffee tones more tempered by chocolate and then fading into some mild bitterness... which then kind of mellows out in a deep embrace with milk chocolate, this is as smooth as a Sinatra serenade, no sense of the ABV in this swirl of velvet except for an occasional kick in the gullet, the after taste lingers longingly here - and is a welcome guest

verdict?
damn tasty black rye ipa, the rye is pretty subtle here but definitely makes its mark, good brew

Picked up a bomber from Ground Control on 11-21-15. Bottled on 11-5-15.

Beer poured black with a beautiful tan head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is roasted malts and citrus hops.

Taste is a huge roasted malt backbone offset nicely by a generous amount of citrus hops.

Mouthfeel is medium to full and pretty smooth.

Overall this is a nice black ale, a big bad ass beer that most folks find is an assault on their senses. It is a rough style that for some reason my pallette gets and enjoys. Check it out if you can handle the assault!

Bottle: Poured a clear dark black color ale with a large dark color head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of green hoppy notes with light citrus flavours and some dry roasted malt. Taste is a nice mix of dry roasted malt with some green citrusy hoppy notes with medium bitter finish. Body is a bit light for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol notes. Not a big fan of the style but this one was quite enjoyable.

More malty sweetness than hoppiness. This seems to me to be misnamed. Chocolate, coffee, a touch of smoke. Sweet upfront before finishing with pretty sturdy bitter hops. Almost strikes me as being built backwards, but still pretty tasty. Looks great, big firm long-lived head and lots of lace. Sweet molasses nose with a noticeable dose of alcohol. Tasty, big flavor, not what you might expect. Yup, that's the alcohol you're feeling.

Clear black colored beer with a minimal tan colored head.

Scents of Pine and Burnt Coffee. Patent malt is strong. High Hopping plus Patent malt equals carrot. Strong aroma of carrot and parsley.

Starts out sweet and savory. Burnt sugar and coffee tastes. Flavors of caramel and carrot. This is decidedly on the sweet side.

Mouthfeel is thick.

Overall an OK beer on the sweet and heavy side for the style.

Black in color with easily 2 inches of brown creamy foam resting on top. Heavy lacing. The aroma is a light pine aroma with a hint of smoke? That's a bit unique, but I dig it. I taste pine and roasted barley. Wow, that's pretty interesting. The mouth is very sticky and resinous. I have to admit this is a pretty interesting and unique black IPA.

22 purchased at Brewer's Haven Boise yesterday afternoon (but most of the bottleshops will have it too)... Enjoyed tonight from my Funk Fest tulip... Pours the expected black with a pillowy dark tan head... good lacing.

Nose is big pithy citrus hops with some lesser tropical fruity hops.. surprisingly there isn't a strong piney element.. roast malt element is present but only as a mild backdrop and allows the hops to play.

Flavor mirrors the aroma.. traditional Cali IPA bitterness is tempered by the roast malt and residual sugars... hop flavors are again bigger citrus and hints of tropical fruit.. burnt malt comes in on the finish and lingers pleasantly with the hops.

Big body ... No EtOH burn at all, surprisingly... pretty well done, that said I doubt I will buy again because there are too many other fantastic brews out there and I don't really appreciate this style too much.

Dark brown-black with a frothy coffee head.

Aroma is of citrus, hops similar to C4, Breaking Bud, Lupulin, etc. No indication it's different apart from the color.

Flavor of grapefruit and rind, slight rye, and finally roast malts. A little abc bubble gum floating around in there a bit. Too much citra, not enough roast malts to balance. As it warms it does Balance a bit though.

Feel is slightly resinous and pretty carbonated, semi dry.

Overall not bad, not something I'd go back to.
