Darkest brown with slightest red cast, thick dark beige head that overtops the glass. It leaves wallpaper lace as it slowly recedes. Perfect look.

Mmmm pine hops and dark caramel,, spicy roast notes, lighter hints of neutral sweet, and tying it together is a citrus character that works behind the other flavors. Strong aroma, very alluring.

A lot going on here in a strong flavored beer. The roast hits first but orange zest and pine join in quickly. Ashy roast and some spicy notes come along for the ride. Sweet is minimal, but is provided by dark/ burnt caramel. Roast wins out, but there still is a lot of pine and citrus pith at the end of the sip. As the glass empties and the beer warms it gets more of an astringent character that detracts.

Very viscous, quite carb.'ed, and a finish that could be a bit cleaner. Almost a buildup of ash on the palate. beer's worst feature.

I really want to like this beer more than I do. Harsh finish, ashy notes to the roast, but plenty of flavors for those folks who love strong and complex brews. Not recommended

Canned 10/17/19

Appearance - Pours near black with some ruddish, cola brown edging. Tan, frothy two-finger width head shows good retention before dying down to a thin, broken layer of surface suds, thickening up around the edge of the glass. Nice lacing, with broken sheeting, some spotting, and lines.

Smell - Citrus, faint roast, and a touch of booze.

Taste - Hops smack the mouth first with citrus; grapefruit, lesser tangerine and a touch of orange. Mid-taste brings a noticeable boozy bite before light hints of roast, rye spice and faint chocolate come into play. Finish brings some grapefruit pith bitterness, leaving an aftertaste that's mostly bitter and with some residual alcohol flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with fair carbonation. Drinks slick and easy before a dry, slightly boozy finish.

Overall - Nice imperial black IPA, but it does have that big boozy bite mid-taste. Not totally unexpected for a 9.5% brew, but it does tend to detract from what might otherwise be a very, very good Imperial BIPA.

Pitch black with a ruby tinge when held to the light, and 3 fingers of deep beige head.

Smells like pine, fresh cut hay, grass, cocoa and toasted malts.

Tastes of cocoa, rust, chocolate, more rust. Cocoa. Rust.

Thick mouth feel with moderate, foamy carbonation.

This was produced in Sept, 2018, and I got it this week, drinking on June 14th, 2019. Lost the hops and replaced with the taste of rust.

On tap at Knee Deep Brewing Co

A: Pours mahogany brown with a frothy tan head that settles to a light layer and leaves some thin lacing.

S: Roasted malt, nice dark chocolate and coffee notes, pine, a little spice, fruity notes, and toffee sweetness.

T: Roasty malt, coffee and dark chocolate, spicy pine, floral, light tropical fruit, apricot and mango, and toffee sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly creamy.

O: Got more of a malty/stouty side rather than just the dark color that some black IPAs have. Really solid.
