Draft, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, very golden/orange color, with a quarter of a finger of white head, speckled with orange highlights that quickly dissolved away to nothing.

Aroma: Lots of pumpkin and spices! Nutmeg, all-spice, clove and brown sugar, all combining to create an intoxicating aroma.

Taste: Not as much pumpkin in the taste as the aroma, but it is there! Really good combination of spice flavors: nutmeg, all-spice, cinnamon, clove and brown sugar. A little on the sweet side, but not at all cloying. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium and with no carbonation to speak of. With an ABV of only 5.0%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a great pumpkin beer! Great flavors of pumpkin, nicely balanced with some strong spice notes. Very, very good!

64 oz brewery filled growler into a pint glass.

Pours a slightly hazed copper that eventually clears out, topped with 1 ½ fingers of foamy white head that has a slight off-sheen to it. The aroma smells of fresh pumpkin, musty earth, a green and herbal hop element and some moderate spicing. A touch of sweet malt works with the pumpkin and citrus to emit a bit of a green twang to the nose.

The taste is fresh and bright feeling pumpkin flavor that has some light vegetative notes on the edges. This is complimented nicely by a crisp citrus profile and some neutral malt sweetness that helps balance this and push the pumpkin and hops forward. This is just a smattering of pumpkin spices throughout the profile, lingering in a finish that is semi-sweet at first and then more dry and earthy. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a crisp feel up front and then more silky smoothness to the carbonation across the back. This is a nice even feel that flows well in the mouth.

Despite a little too much of a vegetable feel at times in the profile, this is the type of Pumpkin Ale that is right up my alley, with a concentration on the pumpkin flavor, taking a more low-key approach to the spices and most of all, keeping the overall focus on a crisp and drinkable experience. I’m glad I picked this up.

All around, a tasty pumpkin brew. Loaded with pie spice, but quite well balanced. Color is light, more pale than expected, almost no head. Aromas are pretty, fresh cinnamon, clove, candied sugar. Quite drinkable, very light on the pumpkin flavors, but well spiced and nice crisp finish. Nice sweetness level for the style, drinkable.

64 oz growler split and poured into a Sierra Nevada tulip.

Thanks to Thorpe429 for shipping me a growler of this goodness!

A - Awesome clear pumpkin orange in color with a low, off-white head. Low retention and no lace left over in the glass. That's sort-of to be expected for a growler coming across the country anyway.

S - A little hint of band-aids is concerning but a good level of allspice, ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon comes through with a big pumpkin gourd backbone. Some caramel malt back in there too. Nice pumpkin aroma.

T - Nice balance with some caramel sweetness and a big level of spiciness but not overdone. The pumpkin is full in the flavor too. Very nice. I like this one a lot.

M - A little under-carbonated but still ok, not flat, it's got a medium-light body with a spicy feel and crisp finish.

D - A very drinkable pumpkin beer with a solid mix of flavors and a nice finish. This could go down pint after pint.

Grabbed a growler from the brewpub yesterday afternoon.

Pours a solid, hazy orange with a thin whisp of off-white head. Laces pretty well as it goes down. Nose is very nice, yet quite subtle. Definite notes of caramelized malt, roasted pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a host of other pumpkin-pie spices. I love the balance between the sweet, caramel nature of the malt and the hint of spices. The taste takes this even further in the right direction, as the balance is quite nice and refreshing. This is the rare pumpkin beer that is neither cloying nor suffering from spice overload. Mouthfeel is a bit thinner than I would like, although I'm bumping it back up a bit due to the fact that my tongue is assailed and pierced by excess cinnamon and clove. Drinkability is really great. My wife and I split a growler of this without a problem. I certainly could have gone for more, which is a rare occurrence, as I'm normally quite done with a pumpkin beer after 6-8 ounces.

growler poured into a tulip. Thanks to BeerFMAndy for sharing!

(A)- Pours a clear rustic colored orange color that produced some white and transparent bubbles.

(S)- A nice combo of spice and pumpkin with a light vanilla-like woody component. Simple, but all balanced well.

(T)- Same as the smell pretty much. A solid pumpkin and spice with some mildly creamy notes.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. Nice combo to it that fits the style well.

(D)- A good pumpkin beer. Nothing really I see that makes this earth shattering, but it is good and true to style. Nice smoothness and actual pumpkin flavors.

Had this seasonal beer on tap from Mad Fox in Falls Church, VA which was a welcoming surprise. Pours clear amber with a small, fizzy white head, low retention with light lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, nutty), light hops (spicy), and light esters (fruity) with notes of pumpkin, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Flavor is heavy malt (bread, cookie, caramel, nutty), light hops (spicy), and light esters (apple/pear) with notes of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Medium body and carbonation, low warmth and creaminess with a dry finish.

Growler shared by BeerFMAndy. Poured in my tulip.

A: Clear amber orange hue. About one finger of beige head. Modest soapy lace.

S: Very solid nose on this one. Pumpkin spices abound. Cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and light vanilla. A modest nuttiness can be picked out as well.

T: The spices come through a bit heavier in the flavor. The sweet malt has enough backbone to help balance things out luckily. Hint of almond in the finish. No hop bitterness which I love. Nothing ruins a pumpkin beer quicker for me than hops.

M: Medium smooth body. Light carbonation.

D: Overall a very nice pumpkin ale. Super easy drinking and balanced. Glad I got a chance to try it.

~~Thanks to CuriousMonk for the growler~~

From notes on 12/06/12:
Poured in a pint glass.

A - One inch of off-white foamy head with okay retention; Deep brass/orange hue with a slightly hazy appearance; No lacing left behind

S - Pretty pleasant and uplifting for a pumpkin ale; Really good balance between pumpkin meat and spices; Has a floral and somewhat herbal/earthy quality as well; Nice touch of biscuity and lightly toasted crust notes

T - Quite a bit of pumpkin meat/flesh in the beginning - really nice to experience it without being masked by too much spice; In addition, plenty of bready and caramel character tagging along with just a faint hint of nuts - reminds me of butternut squash; The allspice and nutmeg spices start to step up mid-taste, though not even close to overpowering - provide nice balance to the now lightly toasted and herbal pumpkin flavor

M - Carbonation and body is light to moderate - wish the body had a bit more presence; Pretty smooth going down; Fairly dry finish

O - Overall, this is a pretty good offering for the style. I've got no real complaints in the aroma/taste as this displays the desired balanced between pumpkin and spice. I do think more body and carbonation would bring added life to this beer, but even so, it's still a very easy drinking pumpkin ale.

Had on tap today at the brewpub.

a - Pours a transparent light amber color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of spices, pumpkin, light cinnamon, and some bready malts. Pretty nice, and ltos of spice up front.

t - Tastes of pumpkin, caramel malts, nutmeg, cinnamon, spices, and bready malts. More pumpkin and sweetness than the nose, and less spice. A big step up.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation.

o - Overall a really nice pumpkin beer from Mad Fox. I loved the taste as it was sweet, and both the nose and taste had some definite pumpkin to it. Very easy to drink and would certainly order it again.

Growler from Mad Fox shared by Mike at a pumpkin beer tasting. This was one of the better ones. Beer is orange and really hazy, like a hefeweizen. The head is thin and made up of tiny white bubbles that leaves some lacing on the glass. Carbonation is moderate to low. Looks good.

Aroma is pretty caramely with some pumpkin in the background, the spices don't jump off the nose but I can detect some cinnamon and some allspice. Smells good.

I hate using the word "balanced" in reviews but this beer is pretty well...balanced. The sweetness from the malt and the pumpkin is in good harmony with the spices, the beer is medium bodied and has a creamy mouthfeel. I generally like Madfox and I think they did a good job with this pumpkin beer.
