750 mL bottle to tulip glass

A: The brew has a yellow-orange color with a cloudy haze, while an easy pour yields a huge, fluffy white head that never really recedes at all.

S: The nose is straightforward farmhouse with a lemony bent - Brett-funk, dried grass, commercial rubber, cherries and lemon. Crackery yeast edges the bouquet.

T: Flavors follow, although a little more hoppy than the nose portends. Plenty of funk, and depth of flavor with nuances of lemon peel, white pepper, flower petals, and a hint of cherries. Oaky and crackery overtones throughout the sip, with a short, clean and refreshing finish.

M: Light-medium bodies, relatively low in carbonation for the style.

Nothing fancy here, just a tasty Saison that could work as a session brew.

L: light and golden in color and transparent. 3/4" of white creamy head. Head retention was on point. Tons of bubbles rode up the glass throughout. Zero lacing lines during enjoyment...

S: lemon and bits of citrus. Strong Brett musty funkyness as well...

T: medium spice, medium low tart, strong lemon, and solid bready yeastyness...

F: medium to medium high feel. Medium acidic tart, medium low dryness.

A- A clear golden straw with a large white head.

S- Brett, slightly funky, lemons, oak, band-aids, peppercorns, wheat.

T- Wheat, musty funk, peppercorns, oak, slightly tart lemons, hay.

M- Smooth, light to medium body.

O- A tasty saison, but was hoping for a little more out of this being a collaboration between Hill Farmstead and Anchorage. Think it could use more time in the bottle.

This saison pours a light golden, almost straw color with just a hint of cloudiness. The head is off-white at two fingers with a LONG retention. The nose is where it's at on this brew: sour apricots, hints of jasmine and peppercorn. The taste follows the nose, but is more muddled than the nose and so lacks a bit of character. The mouthfeel is good and smooth on this one with just a slightly dry finish. All around, a good saison, but fairly mild and not the best I've had. This being a Hillstead Farm collaboration, I was expecting a little more.

Pours a murky straw golden yellow with a solid two finger head of active white foam.

Grain, toast, subtle lactic acidity, musty brett, barnyard funk, wet hay, lemon, and subtle white peppery spice.

Citrusy and lemon notes much more pronounced in flavor than aroma, there is still a musty Bretty funkiness but is less pronounced and the lactic acidity takes on stronger character with a hint of yeasty phenols and white pepper.

Light-bodied, high carbonation, tart, light, refreshing.

Overall, while not a huge fan of the style, this is a great example and certainly worth a sampling.

Opaque straw yellow with a big foamy bubbly head.

Spicy peppery lemon bubblegum on the nose.

Tastes like light barnyard funk enveloping the above aromas, with banana candy very far in the background.

Arctic is kind of a shy, unimposing Saison--for the legendary status of Hill Farmstead, and the sudden notoriety of the up and coming Anchorage, it's a touch underwhelming.

While refreshingly tart, it actually does feel like it has a sort of arctic chill to it, like some greater quality may have been shocked out in the cold.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; Batch #4, bottled in 10/2015. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, pear, melon, peppercorn, wheat, cracker, hay, straw, herbal, grass, light musty funk, light oak/vanilla, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy/earthy yeast and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, pear, melon, peppercorn, wheat, cracker, hay, straw, herbal, grass, light musty funk, light oak/vanilla, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of peppery yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, pear, melon, peppercorn, wheat, cracker, hay, straw, herbal, grass, light musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy/earthy yeast and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from carbonation and yeast spiciness as well. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth crisp, and lightly creamy/bready/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Brett saison. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy/earthy yeast and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

This is a fantastic saison that emerged from the collaboration between the world renowned Hill Farmstead with the well-respected Anchorage brewing. It is very clean and refreshing. I tasted essentially a lemony explosion. There is nice foamy head and great carbonation. Any time is a great time drink saisons but I imagine this would be heavenly in the summer time.

Cloudy gold, a couple fingers of foam, good surface coverage.
Funky Brett aroma, wet hay and sandalwood, dried lemon peel.
Taste is all funky Brett, much the same as the aroma with a bone dry finish and mild bitterness.
Nicely balanced and drinkable, the Brett dominates. For my money Saison Brett holds its own against this, but it was nice to try.

Saison is my second favorite style and this is certainly a stellar example. Lots of brett, hops and funk on a light, bubbly body with amazing head retention this beer is exceptional and should be sought after.

750ml corked and caged batch 2 bottle poured into tulip 8/9/15

A milky bright yellow liquid with tiny speedy bubbles popping up from everywhere, as much foam as you desire really I stop it at a large loose three fingers, decent retention oddly enough half of the glass sticks around while the other half has a thin film, lots of random lace deep down the glass

S heavy brett and wet wood, hint of leather, 18 months old but I'm still getting plenty of tropical hops with some lemon, pineapple, green apple, and maybe some dried mango, loving the funk, has some vinous notes working wonders, dried hay and grass just add to the complexity, sexy stuff for sure

T again I'm getting vinous notes, heaps of funk but the fruity aspects toned down, more wood, some vinegar, apples green, tart but not all that sour, tastes great but the nose was a hard act to follow

M light and fluffy, just a little prickly, very mild sour bite, fine grit and some fruity barnyard linger

O plenty going on with this one, the funks coming out strong, still lots of fruity hops, I'm guessing wine barrels have a role, just all around great

One of those beers I want to try at every age, its not every day a "new" brew enters my area with 18 months of age on it, I'm hating the price tag because I want more

Bottle: Poured a hazy blonde color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of light Brett notes with some light lemon notes and rustic malt. Taste is a complex mix between some light lemon notes with dry Brett notes, solid rustic malt and light peppery yeast notes. Body is fuller then average with great carbonation. Solid interpretation of the style with good amount of complexity while retaining some drinkability.

Decent little beer that I received in a trade from a friend that went to Alaska. I probably was a bit hasty on opening this one, as it might have tasted even better with some aging. Nevertheless, an overall well balanced brew with a great color in the glass.

I'm not much for reviews, but this is impressive! An awesome example of what Brett can do for a Saison.

Main reason I wanted to review this beer was to heed caution to fellow BAs...
If you have a Batch #3 bottle, do yourself a favor and put at least a year on it- you will be rewarded.

Batch#3 (thanks Will!). 750ml corked and caged bottle served in a tulip. Pours a dull, orange-gold with a semi-translucent clarity and a frothy, half-inch, bright white head that eventually settles into a solid slick. Copious tiny bubbles are present effervescing in solution. Delicate strands of lacing are revealed during the tasting. Aromas come off bready from afar; however, as I pass the glass under my nose I also get a light, lemony quality as well as soft Bretty notes; albeit not overly medicinal or funky. Taste consistent with nose; however, there's also a kiss of light fruit - perhaps a trace of apricot towards the back. Flavor profile is not overly assertive and slightly watery with a mild tartness. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light) with a pleasant, even carbonation, and a kiss of acidity. Overall, a nice looking beer in the glass, but nothing particularly stands out for me. It might be worth seeing if the Brett becomes a bit more assertive with time and brings out a layer of complexity.

Second Siason I've ever had. first was something from Blue Moon and it was quite well for a starter. So this is the real first not connected to a BMC.

L: When I uncorked it, smoke billowed in wisps. Pale, pale, pale yellow and merky! It looks like a really light hefe. Poured into Sam Adams pint glass and got a solid two fingers worth of head. Head is very spongy )thicker than a lace) Glass stays sudsy as you drink, and a nice thin layer of head.

S: When first poured, it smells very vermouth-ish, closer to champagne. It wasn't bad, it smells sophisticated. Its not a normal beer smell if you've never tried. But you can smellhints of yeast and light hops. After my second glass it smells close to a Chardonnay. Whick is honestly great as its one of my favorite styles of wine, and it too smells rather vermouth like.

T: What I am growing to like about Siason is two things in particular. First, this is what I noticed on this bottle. If IPA's and Pale Ales are to shine in hop, and Stouts truly shine in malted and roasted barley, Siasons shine in yeast. Which I never knew is what I wanted. I didn't really think the taste could be attributed to yeast. I had always heard about the Belgium wild yeasts, but I had no idea they could have such a fruity impact on the taste. Secondly with a Siason, I realize that the taste of every sip is like sticking your hand into a Crown Royal bag of Skittles in the dark to pull out three and put them into your mouth. Every sip is not the same, but you get a lot of the same notes in different waves with new combos. That is why it's now one of my new sought after styles. With this, I do get a lot of that grape taste that I smell. But I do get that intoxicating taste of fresh baked bread with a brittle and chewy crust. I'm curious what hops was used that was so delicate but so popping to taste like grape and white peach. Barley. I can't tell whatit is, but it is subtle and sweet. The taste does tend to linger for a while front to back. and it still tastes good. There is that slight enjoyable bitter taste, like chewing on the white leather that holds the sweet pulp of a ruby red grapefruite, but really really muted.

F: To me it has that "perfect" beer feel. There's that thing I imagine when I think "man I want a nice wonderful beer" and I think I want it sudsy, nice and frothy, and a slightly thicker than water feel across my tongue. I wish I could find an IPA that had the feel like this. It feels....right! I'm glad I live in a state that I can enjoy beers like this. I know it is brewed in Vermont, but it was brought together with Anchorage Brewing Company, and Alaska has some amazing beers just like this.

O: Slowly Siason is coming up as one of my favorite styles next to Porter, IPA, and Wheat. Every sip is a gamble, always feel like you are tasting the wonderful yeasts that make the magic happen because godisgood. I'm not saying this is a perfect beer, but each individual thing I'm analyzing is damn near perfect to make me happy! SO GLAD I took a gamble on this. For some reason Siason is kind of hard to find.

Very lively and refreshing. A nice summertime porch beer.

LOOK: Golden color; slightly cloud (appropriate to the style) with a big effervescent white crown. Big bubbles. "Bumpy" head reminds me of a cloud.

SMELL: Slightly tart bouquet.

TASTE: Not as sour as I'd expect from something that features brett (though those notes are there). Carbonation helps the flavors open on the tongue. Lively, refreshing.

FEEL: Smooth drinking -- like liquid summer. Carbonation is tingly on the tongue.

Note: poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a 16 oz. shaker glass.

Pored from a corked and caged 750 ml dated March 2014 into Hill Farmstead stemware at Armsby Abbey in Worcester, MA. Pours that murky hazy pale sunset fog that makes me salivate... The aroma quickly reveals the funky characteristics I so crave. The taste delivers. Funkier, fruitier, and more delicious with each sip. Refreshing and satisfying. A must enjoyable bottle and glass to linger over. Orange and pineapple, maybe a little past ripe, dominate the finish. Velvety smooth but undefined mouthfeel. This beer makes the day better.

what a special beer this is, one of the best straight up brett experiences i have had in some time. sunny blonde beer with some appropriate yeast haze and a tall white airy head that rises well above the rim of the glass and clings on for ages. tart and funky is the nose, with citrus in there too. more brett than saison yeast, and just the right hop selection and dosage for this beer to be bitterly balanced but yeast not hop flavored predominantly. not often i get a beer of this depth and quality, just so alive on the palate, with the brett getting a little puckery later on. wet grass and orchard fruit notes come from the saison yeast, and the wheat malt base seems the perfect vehicle for these light summery interesting flavors to link up. one of the most dry saisons i can recall, with the brett reconditioning being fully complete. im left refreshed and intrigued and thirsty for more, i love when beer makes me this happy!

Pours hazy and a light golden color with a 1-2 fingers of white fluffy head, falling to a thin color. The nose is soft and complex with lots of floral notes, lemon citrus and hints for farmy Brett. On the palate, this beer really opened up as it warmed; it featured again lots of floral and spice notes, lemon peel, white pepper, some nice Belgian yeast flavors and more and more Brett as it warmed. The body was smooth with a nice carbonation keeping it light and refreshing. A really nice version of the style, complex and enticing.

750 ml bottle poured into a wine glass. Batch #2. March 2014

Appearance: Pours a golden yellow with 1+ finger of a white head that dissipates to a thin cap. Body is very hazy but translucent with lots of visible carbonation.

Smell: Pear, wheat, lemon, peppery yeast, light funk and hints of pineapple.

Taste: Highly tart with a lighter sour acidity. Lemon, good amount of bretty funk, pineapple/tropical notes, some green apple and floral hops. Medium bitterness that lingers for quite a while.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a soft mouthfeel. Carbonation is high/medium. Finishes tart and dry.

Overall: Pretty good saison. Nice funk and tartness, but would like to have seen the bitterness turned down a bit, as I feel like it doesn't really work with the rest of the beer. Still worth picking up though.

Pale yellow with a peppy white head. I know the beer is what's important but I'd appreciate some better bottle art. Damp hay, funk and floral aroma. Tastes crisp, dry and funky with lemon, floral herbal sweetness, sourdough and more. One of those beers that changes as it warms and you can fish for new flavors and flavor combinations throughout the bottle.
