Went here a while back while in Leavenworth. Was starving at the time so we decided to check this place out. The building/atmosphere is average, there is an upstairs which appeared to have a different beer selection than that of the downstairs which I thought was weird. The downstairs looked to have the better selection of beer. It didn't seem that there was much in the way of good German beer at all, I think they had a Hofbrau lager, other than that it was Widmer Hef and other local Washington/Oregon beers. Food was not authentic German at all, i got a bratwurst with potato salad. The potato salad I swear was the exact same stuff you buy at the deli at Safeway....it was decent just not real German potato salad by any means. Service was just ok, the place was pretty busy at the time so probably just slow service on the account of that. I'll pass on Gustavs in the future, there are better places with authentic German food and good German beers in town.

I have been to this place many times, but only once since I turned 21. The food is great; I don't know how Bavarian the food is, but some of it seems German enough. Everything I have tried is good, food wise. They usually have a few German beers, with names I find hard to pronounce. I tried two of them (sadly I can not remember the names), and some more local beers. Every beer I tried, local or German, was great.

My only complaint was the guy working behind the bar. He studied every nanometer of my license about 10 times. The proceeded to shoot me suspicious glares the whole time I was there. The other waiters were nice, helpful, and quick. One of them was really stoned, but surprisingly efficient.

So the big plus for Gustav's is the triagular deck on the second floor. On a sunny day with the mountains looming in the not so distance and the "faux Bavarian" architecture all around and a view of the river on parts of the deck, it's an amazingly pleasant place to have a beer.

The big minus. seperate beer menues for upstairs and downstairs. After ordering from the short list, on the way out I discovered the full list downstairs. Lame.

The upstairs beer list had three contract beers under a house label, Widmer Hef(no Paulaner to go with your German theme?) HofBrau lager and a couple other macro-Crafts.

A: A touristy type place with not much beer talk here. A family type place though

Q: Not that busy on a Saturday afternoon. Quailty of stuff seemed to be good. I would not know since I had nothing there

S: Not good. Went in, sat at bar, no service. The people that came in behind me sat down next tome and got immediate beers. I was ignored on purpose I felt because they kept looking at me and turning their back before I could speak. I left. Felt like I was the Torondao-SF at times.

S: 3 contract brewed beers for Gustavs, probably by Leavenworth. There were Iron Horse, Leavenworth, Deschutes beers. 25 taps overall, most were good.

F: No try
