Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A different beer from previous draft iterations of SR-71. This beer has been confirmed to be the equivalent of Assassin (Barrel Aged Norseman’s Wrath) with more time in the barrels. The fill date mirrors the 2014 Assassin release that was aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels and is most likely drawn from the exact same batch of base beer.

2015 release. This one is barrel aged in pappy van winkle 20 year barrels

Bcs rare flavor all over this one! Even the nose is amazing and complex. So much chocolate and cocoa. Very rich. The bourbon is amazing. Not hot or boozy, just provides the right amount of flavor. Oak and vanilla. Creamy. Dark fruits. Coffee and roasted malts.

Full bodied. Nice carbonation albeit though. It works well with this beer. Ends with a palate of raisins, molasses, and chocolate.

Overall, absolute amazing. The van winkles barrels really make a difference. This beer is incredible and worth whatever hype it surrounds. Having had PVW assassin and this, I must say this is way ahead of assassin.

Amazing brew, insanely overhyped. Trade away your left arm if you want, but there are other barrel-aged stouts that are every bit as good as this and are much easier to obtain.

Tried at huna day 2015. This brew is a mess. Needs some time to let those favors blend I guess. A hot mess,

Update: Had a bottle, found it to be pretty much the same. Overly sweet lacking the rich malt needed to balance. Wood is strong and doesn't mesh with all the sweetness well.

Had on tap at hunah day. pour is jet black with a small amount of dark mahogany head. Nose is heavy wood, very little malt, decent bit of bourbon. Gets a bit acrid and boozy in the nose. Taste has a bit more malt, also some residual sugar in the back. Heavy charred wood, strong bourbon, slightly boozy. Rich malt mid palate, cake like, finish is very sweet and sugary. It's like a sweeter woodier bcs. Full bodied, moderate carb. Virtually the same beer as assassin, overly sweet and barrel poorly integrated. This one is overly woody and charred as well..

At first I thought it was hype. I thought 14 Assassin was ok. This was a complete different beast.

Smell: The smell is of bourbon and a deep rich chocolate. A slight hint of vanilla.

Pours: Pitch black with a brown head. Pours silky, not quite like motor oil like BG&E.

Taste: Roasted Marshmallows, Silk smooth chocolate. Its quite decadent, I don't think I can solo this beast. Its very complex tasting, but nonetheless its an amazing stout. From my notes, I don't think it tasted at all like Assassin, but tastes better.

Carb: Good on carb, but its a smoother feel to it.

They don't get better than this. Better than either of the 2014 release TG Stouts (Assassin and KBBS). Much more balanced between barrel and base. Last year i thought TG overdid it on the barrel flavor with KBBS, Assassin and Naughty Temple. This one is as perfect of a BA stout as i have come across. Assassin Rare is a solid description as it is very similar to BCS Rare.

Fudge, Vanilla, Molasses, coffee rosatiness, a little dark fruit.....perfection! Best thing they have bottled since 13 KBBS and Mornin Delight.

black body with small medium brown head that quickly drops down to thin ring around the glass. Smells like fudge and pappy barrels. Taste is much the same with awesome lingering barrel notes that just do not go away for the longest time. thick full boided stout. Oily and rich and immediately mouthcoating. No booze to this stout at all. What a treat! This TG stout is my third favorite stout from TG; Mornin' Delight and silver wax KBBS are better that SR-71, but not by much. Yellow wax assassin is my next favorite stout below the SR-71. Man, appy barrels and TG stout are a killer good combo! This beer lives the hype just like all the other TG stouts! SR-71 also reminds me quite a bit of Vodoo Black Magick aged in pappy barrels.

Appearance is like coffee but no head. Tastes like liquid chocolate with mellow coffee and smooth wood. Also creamy marshmallow and slight vanilla and maple syrup. Probably the best non-adjunct BA stout I have had. I will put it up there with BVDL but probably a better beer due to no "adjunct cheating." Get and get it quickly. This will ghost away in no time.

Smooth viscous beautiful pour. Fantastic dark mocha millimeter head. Looks like black glass. Smell is still pretty boozy. First taste is a flood of rich chocolate and barrel. Extremely thick. Perfect carb. One of the best non-adjunct BA stouts I've had. Prob the best, actually (note - I've never had OG Rare or Assassin).

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky black. No head. Leggy and thick.

Smell - Intense roasted malt. Bourbon. Really fudgy. I don't smell a lot of coffee.

Taste - Bourbon up front. Then intense heavy roasted malts. Very sweet. Heavy fudge and dark chocolate. Molasses lingers in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Super heavy. Low carbonation. Boozy as hell.

Overall - I would love to have this next to 2014 Assassin. It's just from memory, but this really doesn't seem like the same like the same beer. This is much fudgier and there seems to be less coffee. Who knows.

I came into this knowing nothing more then it's supposed to be pretty good. And after 2700 or so beers, this is easily in the top five. No kidding. This shit is the truth.

My review will mean little in the flurry of ever escalating stout raves and costs of entry for the perceived "top tier." But here's my riff on this beer. Yes, it's excellent. It doesn't quite get the head I'd like, little retention, but it sheets the glass. It's that heavy appearance but doesn't take it to next level pudding solidity like, say, Life is Like. Personally, I like a beer with some head that sticks around. Smell is deep fudge, like distilled brownie batter. Is there really wood presence, barrel, bourbon? Not that I can tell. The nose unifies into one megalithic wave of infinitely dense fudge. Dark enough to almost be savory, a hint of umami / soy that's so subsumed in CHOCOLATE it never becomes off-putting. The flavor? Exactly the same. EXACTLY. What you smell is what you get. No surprises, new nuances, subtlety. It's Platonically true from look to smell to taste to dense / creamy / mouth coating batter feel. Thankfully, it's not intensely sweet. To get this density without tipping into syrup terrain is an accomplishment. So, my critique; it's one note. One very loud, resonant, pretty awesome note ... but it wears you out. It doesn't develop / transform over the glass ... it just bangs the gong over and over again, relentlessly. 6 ounces is enough, 8 is still doable. 10 is too damned much. It's the beer equivalent of classic heavy metal's massive wall of of Marshall amps and a thunderous power chord. It has a power, a purity but at the end of the day there's no real composition. It's just pounding your sense organs and I don't know that it says anything unique. It's not fascinating. Like stealth there's nothing to discover.

Reading some of the other reviews from Hunahpu Day tasting. I thought this beer was excellent and smooth. One of my favorites of the afternoon. I wouldn't go 1:1 with my DBH, but its the first time I've legitimately thought about it.

I like the base beer here, but the barrel treatment is a little over the top. Much too hot on the finish.
