Canned 4/5/21, best by 10/2/21

Funny story with this one. I saw the 4 pack of the Pineapple Papaya Fandango on the shelf and was intrigued by it so I reached inside and grabbed a single. Checked the date immediately and threw it in my cart. Well, little did I realize that it was actually this beer inside the pack, which I didn’t notice until I got back home. Not exactly what I wanted, but I’m excited to try it nonetheless

Pours a beautiful cloudy ruby with 3 fingers of of pink tinted head that quickly fades to a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing. Regardless, it looks absolutely gorgeous in the absence of head

There’s a certain candy note in the nose that I can’t quite place though it’s very familiar, similar to a Starburst. I’m picking up on aromas of sweet strawberry, underripe mango, candied cherry, crackery malt, a touch of cracked pepper, and tart dragon fruit

Pretty similar in taste, though a bit more tart than candy like. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting tart dragon fruit, mango sherbet, lemon peel, clean lacto funk, and bready malt. The swallow brings notes of sweet passion fruit, bready malt, tart cherry, dragon fruit, and a touch of strawberry

A light medium body pairs with very gentle carbonation, resulting in a tingly and refreshing beer. Finishes mostly dry with a nice tartness

Well, I’d have to say that grabbing this was quite the happy accident on my part! I think I’ll have to go back and actually try out the pineapple papaya variant as well

Dragon Fandango from Toppling Goliath Brewing. Purchased on 16 Aug 21 from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $ 5.00 (Including tax) per 16 oz can ($0.313 /oz). In the reefer at the store, stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 18/8/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on bottom of can “PKG 04/05/21”. Served at 44.7 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 55.5 degrees.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Munsell red, clear.
Body – Munsell red, opaque. When rear-lite, same with light barely penetrating.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), pink, high density but shifting to low density and fizzy, rapidly diminishing to a one mm crown constantly reinforced by effervescence and no cap. Second pour produces an ephemeral 0.3 cm head.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.5 – Weak generic tropical fruits with a hint of sulfur, sour, no malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.75 – Begins slightly sweet then quickly shifts to slightly sour and follows the nose, except no sulfur. No malt, no yeast. Almost refreshing. No ethanol (4.2 % ABV, according to TG website, NOT marked on container) taste or aroma. Faint mango. No gastric warming. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation 3.5 Do not know when the last time was that I saw either passion fruit or dragon fruit at my local grocery store so I’m not particularly familiar with their aromas or flavors; mangos I know well. Nice Hawaiian Punch with a weak alcohol backbone. Nice dragon on the can with the snout tendrils giving it a slightly Eastern look.

16oz can into a pint glass. Canned 3/29/21, so 4 1/2 months old.

Pours an attractive reddish body with a pink tinged head. This lasts about 10 minutes, not much lacing.

Tart fruit aroma.

On tasting, sweet, tart, fruity, seems well balanced, no category dominates or overwhelms.

Mouth medium, finish tart citrus fruit.

Overall, decent enouth solid fruited kettle sour. Would'nt want more than one at a time though.

Can to snifter.

LOOK: bright neon fuschia color, medium pink head, very good retention.

AROMA: raspberry, citrus, mango.

TASTE: passion fruit and mango are strong and sour, but this is not too tart for me despite my aversion to that.

I am not a sour person, but I do enjoy some of these when the "too-sour-for-me" line is not crossed as is the case here.

Canned one month ago.

Pours deep purple-red with a pink head that dissipates quickly.

The nose is passionfruit and dragon fruit. Simultaneously delicate and impactful. Very nice.

The taste is surprisingly sour. Medium+ tartness with flavors of passion fruit, dragon fruit, and berry. Low to medium sweetness offsets the tartness.

The mouthfeel is medium for the style. Opens juicy and full and finishes tart and lightly dry.

Overall, very good.

16oz. can into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter.

No head. Fantastic bright red/pink color. Nose is super aromatic passionfruit, mango, and dragonfruit. The mango really stands out here. Delicious. Beer opens mango and dragonfruit sweetness. Lightly tart with mango puree from beginning to end. Finish is soft with touches of passionfruit seediness. The dragonfruit is present but subtle. Not the most bold flavor. Still, mango carries the day here. Body is light with ample carbonation. Prickly and lively on the palate and goes down aggressive with a puckering, lingering, filmy finish.

A very solid beer with huge fruit flavors. Not a lot of subtlety but the flavors that are present are delicious.

16 oz can poured into a snifter. I don't understand the high ratings. Looks, smells, and tastes like straight-up fruit juice and barely tastes like beer at all. Not complex. Super easy to drink and refreshing but that's all there is to it.

L - Bright red with big bubbles. Head dissipates quickly
S - Smells like one of those mixed fruit cups you get in your school lunch
T - Fairly tart. Slightly more mango than passion or dragon fruit. Barely a hint of bready yeast in the aftertaste.
F - Plenty effervescent, but quite light on the palate.
O - This beer is a fruit bomb with just a hint of beer flavor. Tastes a lot like pop without the sugar. I'm a big fan, but if you like your beer to taste like beer it's not for you.

(Yesterday from notes) I was sitting in my backyard, it is warm for October, 91 degrees (33 Celsius), and I was drinking a Wild Ale from Toppling Goliath, Dragon Fandango, brewed with Mango, Passionfruit and Dragon fruit, ABV 5.00%. The flavor is passion fruit, maybe watermelon, I admit I don't remember how dragon fruit taste like, and I don't really get the mango. It is a bit sweet, mildly tart, tropical fruity, a long lasting passion fruit flavor with a hint of lemon. However, it is a bit "flat" in the flavor, no yeast, no bitterness, no funk, mild tartness. It is like tropical fruit juice. I love the IPAs from Toppling Goliath but I am not sure about this one. Maybe I am spoiled by the Wild Ales from Jester King.

Look: bright red with a quickly dissipating white head

Aroma: tropical fruits

Taste: bit sweet, mildly tart, tropical fruity, a long lasting passion fruit flavor with a hint of lemon.

Overall: good looking, a bit flat, fruit juice

Dragon Fandango has a bold, bright pink color that may turn some people away, but it's very intriguing. If dragons were real, this is what their blood might look like.

The smell is very fruity, but not overpowering.

The taste is great! It is described as a Mango, Passion Fruit, and Dragon Fruit beer, but all I get is a very prominent Passion Fruit taste. A minor tartness like a sour beer, but it is leaning very much on the sweet side.

The feel of it is crisp and refreshing, with a bit of a bite, but it does not burn on the way down like more acidic wild ales. No beer will ever get a solid 5 in every category from me, but this one was damn close! By far the best Wild ale out right. now

Looks, smells, and tastes like some kind of sour alcoholic Kool-Aid.

Look: dark pinkish-red-purple cough syrup. (This is supposed to be a beer, right?)

Smell and taste: sour passionfruit Kool-Aid, watermelon jolly-rancher, Hawaiian Punch, sour gummy worm (first time ever using these words to describe a beer). Incredibly balanced sweet and sour with a hint of delicious malt bitterness at the end.

Overall: smells and tastes pretty good—for sour candy anyway, not so sure for a beer. And that is the strange thing about it. Objectively it tastes good, but closer to a wine cooler or sour candy than any beer I have ever had. Because of that I am left confused about how to rate it. Is it genius? Is it a drain pour? Kind of depends on preferences and expectations. In the end I decided it is a great change of pace for anyone looking four a sweet and sour kettle beer.

Does not look like beer, Does not smell like beer, And it definitely does not taste like beer. Nice fruit flavor but it is too sweet and also has a rind flavored undertone. Almost a celery or Bloody Mary flavor which maybe just how it looks. Sour but not puckering with no depth. It is obvious this beer has its fans, but I am not one of them. To me this is just an underwhelming fruited kettle sour which there are no shortage of choices sadly today.

Great beer! Pours a shocking deep reddidish color from the dragonfruit, but with no real head. The smell and the taste are heavy on the passion fruit and less on the mango and dragonfruit, but they are both there. Concentrated, interesting flavors, and nicely balanced between sweet and tart. Refreshing and excellent.

M: Light body. Fruit sweetness, tart, and sour notes. Some berry purée feel on the palate.
D: Such a well done fruited sour! Absolutely beautiful in the glass with such vibrant color.

Wow. Boom. Wild. All kinds of wild. Raul in Tijuana in 2001 when he was 17, kind of wild. Damn son of a gun blows up at you like General Grant put a bouquet of fruit into a cannon. Go boom. Rawhide. Juicy like your girl after the wedding. Yeah, I’m into it. So dark. So pungent. So intoxicating... fierce, even. This beer is fierce. It speaks to me like a new born wants to.

Thanks, Sam!

Got this and a whole bunch of other goodies from Sam. Toppling Goliath is my second-highest reviewed brewery, but I admittedly did not know that they did any sours. Can description read, “Join the dragon in a dance to celebrate this unique kettle sour, blended with dragon fruit, mango and passion fruit puree. Raise a glass, dance the fandango and celebrate the magic of these tropical fruits.”

Poured a cranberry reddish murky color with one finger of off-white frothy head. Could see a few bubble streams coming up along the sides of the glass. Outstanding spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled passion fruit, Hawaiian fruit punch, raspberry, guava, mango and candied watermelon. Similar from the can with passion fruit and fruit punch leading the way. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste followed the nose, maybe even better. In order got passion fruit, Hawaiian fruit punch, guava, mango, raspberry, red grape, cranberry and candied watermelon. (Taste - 4.25)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, sour, juicy finish. (Feel - 4.75)

Just a really good kettle sour. Not overly sour and easy to drink. (Overall - 4.25)

Description: Color is some kind of neon purple/fuschia that I last saw in a 64-pack of Crayola when I was in third grade. It's generally cloudy with no head. Interesting to say the least. Aroma gives off a huge burst of tropical fruit and other than mango, I couldn't identify the others (dragon fruit, passion fruit) without help from the label. Not your garden variety citrus. Taste is tart and sweet and it follows the nose. Very flavorful, tropical notes and it's intense. It's like drink fresh squeezed fruit juice...plus some sugar. Feel is smooth and body is medium.

Overall: 4.25 (This beer is good and I would likely drink it again) Unique appearance, bold aromas and very flavorful. If I had one knock, it might be that it was a little too flavorful and intense. Still, this beer is very well done and totally crushable. If you like the style it's worth a try.

Picked-up a four-pack of cans at Bradford's in Plymouth for about $16. My nineteenth brew reviewed from these guys. With COVID-19, I try to get in & out of the packy as quickly as possible these days, so didn't look too closely at the box, & was sucked in by the dragon. Not at all my style of beer, way too sour, but well done for the style.

Poured from a pint can into a tulip.

Pours murky pink with an excellent fizzy/foamy pinkish head that doesn't stick around that long but the lacing and legs are excellent.

Dragonfruit can be a bit much, but the aroma here is offset well with mango and excellent sharp acid smells.

The brew hits the tip of the tongue with clean clear kiwi, dragonfruit, mango, pear, and melon. And then solid but not overwhelming lactic tartness balances it out. Skewed sweet, still, for the style. But blessedly, this sour isn't an imperial booze bomb on top of everything else.

The brew has a solidly medium feel, but he acidity and carbonation make it pretty darn lively despite the sweetness.

This has a bunch going for it, but it's too sweet for the style. Still, tip of the hat to TG for taking on a flavor that usually overwhelms with sweetness.

A - Hazy cherry red color with thin lacing around the top. It's pretty much a vibrant blood color.

S - Passion and dragon fruit dominate the nose on this beer with some resiny pungency.

T - Exactly described by the label: mango, passion fruit, and dragon fruit with some pungent intensity. The acidity for a Wild Ale sits more towards the tamer side (not what I expected). I have to honestly say, the only prior exposure I've had to Dragon Fruit is when drinking Vitamin Water, and it's the same color.

M - Big and thick for a 5% beer that leaves the entire palate and mouth wet and watering.

O - I'm not a fan of Wild Ales (even though I've reviewed more than I care to count) ... overall, I'd recommend this one because it's not obnoxiously acidic or overly tart which has been my problem with this style. Whether a fan of Wilds or not, seek this one out, it's very well done.
