I’d recently heard of Dorothy’s New World Lager. Then, found that it comes from Toppling Goliath Brewing Company out of Decorah, Iowa. Viking land! Norwegian Northern Iowa! My in-laws are from Waukon, which is just east of there, about 20 miles. I didn’t even know there was a brewery there!

The family went out to dinner at Rudy’s and because they are affiliated with The Lava Lounge and the Beer Hall, they always have GREAT beers available! I saw a can of Dorothy’s on the shelf and decided it was time to try it! I wasn’t disappointed!

Being a lager, it’s a lighter yellow in color but this is different. Unfiltered, the pour is thicker with a medium head. When it settles, the remnants of the yeasts and grains (possibly corn – more on that later) seem to be suspended rather than settling. The nose is quite floral, signaling a floral hop, most likely Iowa grown. There’s a spice I can’t put my finger on, but probably because the citrusy sour kind of overwhelms it. At first sniff, it comes off decidedly sweet. However, it doesn’t taste that way.

As I’ve pointed out before, I don’t really like a sweet brew. Most summer shandies are too sweet. I’ll drink it if it’s offered and the only thing around, but I will normally not choose one. First drink is smooth and tasty. The head is lemony, but the lager itself is bready. Sugar and yeast definitely brings the white bread forward on the tongue. Not at all dry, the lager doesn’t come off as a normal lager. Toppling Goliath considers this a California Common. I find it somewhere between a lager and IPA. Not as crisp as either, more smooth, but thicker fluidity. That’s not a bad thing. With that thickness and floating elements, there’s a lot of flavor – on the tongue and throat.

It’s not bitter at all, slightly sour, but the sugar balances all, quite well. It’s a good drink, but filling. I couldn’t have any more than one at a sitting. It’s only 5.5% ABV, so it’s not a strong alcohol flavor, but again, it is VERY filing. All in all, I’d buy a 4 or 6 pack (comes in tall cans) but it would be a month or more before I’d finished them all.

Undated 16 oz. can purchased at Yankee Liquor in Sturbridge, CT. Poured into Belgian ale glass.

L: Pretty big head with decent retention, leaving fluffy white lacing and a cap and ring. Beer is a slightly hazy golden.

S: Yeasty and bready, though a little reserved. A bit florally hopped.

T: A bit of hoppy citrus, but mostly yeasty and bready. Neutral finish despite hopping.

F: A bit more substantial than you might expect for a lager. Probably could use a bit more carbonation. Construction and balance are fine.

O: Not Jack's Abby or Carton level, but perfectly fine.

Consumed 4/22/18

A: Golden yellow - some haze, probably could have been avoided if I poured more carefully, but I did not expect sediment from a lager - pours with a medium sized white head, fades to a wispy cap, retains a small collar, leaves some streaks of lacing

S: Some lager yeast, but otherwise smells like one of the many Toppling Goliath pale ales - decidedly American hops with some floral citrus and light fruit - some lager yeast with some light notes of pepper - some notes of grass - some pils malts, grainy with lots of cereal aromas - slightly above-average sweetness, maybe even a hint of corn

T: New World indeed - floral citrus as well as some tangerine and orange juice - some additional fruity notes, apples and pears - fruity esters - some lager yeast flavor, with just a few notes of pepper - touch of grass - low bitterness - above-average sweetness, even for the style, with some grainy and cereal sweetness - finish could be a lot cleaner with some lingering sugar

M: Medium to light body, medium to low carbonation, more smooth than crisp which seems weird for a lager

O: California steamin'

I have some mixed feelings on this beer. I think I have only reviewed one steam beer in the past, and it was Anchor Steam, which is the benchmark for the style. Overall, I like Dorothy's, but it seems a bit too much like a pale ale in every way except the yeast. It lacks the refreshing, crisp, clarity of a lager. It tastes so much like some of Toppling Goliath's other offerings that it just makes me want to drink a Pseudo Sue rather than another one of these. If they had used more Munich malt and maybe some German hops, it may be a different story...
