While the folks in lab coats say that these hops are strictly for bittering and not well-suited for aroma or flavor, the folks at Toppling Goliath beg to differ. Showcasing America's early hop history with this "Nugget" variety and layered on a bed of British "Golden Promise" malts promise roundness balance and an elegant sweetness to support.

While there's little gambling here, Golden Nugget pours with a calm amber-gold hue and a modest foggy gaze. Its fluffy white foam builds an arid lather and laces with ease throughout the session. Heavy on spruce and pine aromatics, hints of under-ripened citrus waft about in a floral scent that precedes a malty taste that's modestly of caramel, nutty and toasty undertones.

With the malts lifting and the hops settling onto the tastebuds, the early taste is acute with white grapefruit and bitter orange. But the hops develop into a deep and resinous taste that's cleanly of torn pine needle, spruce tip and a fresh grassy, stemmy, leafy endeavor. Bitter with a sappy and peppery bite, the retreating malts keep the taste creamy and dry.

Medium-light for IPA, the beer's simple grain bill is uncluttered and allows the Nugget hops to shine. Giving the the tepid sweetness and starchiness to buffer the hops' bitterness from the palate. Its long and piney bitterness grips the throat relentlessly and reinforces a clean, crisp and refreshing aftertaste.

BOD 10/1/15. Clear golden pour with a touch of darkening amber. Outstanding head volume, world class lacing and retention.

Outstanding nose of tropical citrus (mango, pineapple), peach, a touch of pine and orange over a subtle biscuit.

Heavy light body that is smooth with a hint of oily texture. World class carbonation with an effervescent burst in the middle and a finely bubbled prickly finish.

The flavor profile is borderline world class. It is masterfully complex and balanced. For the style, this hop flavor forward IPA is a bit light on bitterness. It begins with a wave of blended hop flavors that slowly separate into those of the nose. The tropicals lead initially, but orange, with a tangerine slant, controls the middle over a rising bready biscuit sweetness. Middle bitterness is rather light and has a rind and pine based quality. The finish is a tad dry and leaves you with a lingering citrus flavor. Alcohol is completely covered.

Pours a hazy golden color with a nice bright white head. Very floral and citrusy aroma. Fantastic hop flavor with very mild bitterness. Slightly sweet on the back end with a smooth finish. One of the better IPAs I’ve had.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 12 oz bottle on January 16, 2016. Tasted from a 16 oz can on January 23, 2015. Hop, citrus and evergreen aromas. Bitter yet pleasant finish.

The nose has a wonderful balance of citrus and pine resin, which translates flawlessly to the palate but with some nice added floral sweetness to cap off the sip. Each sip keeps you coming back for another. Very smooth and easy drinking IPA. Wonderfully balanced and very approachable.

Last beer for tonight, I've had it many times before, it is a very good one. Dark golden hue with an inch white head (the way I pour it) and pleasant piney, sweet, citrusy aroma. The taste starts out piney followed by grapefruit and some sweetness 3 seconds later, and then a pleasant lingering bitterness. A very good beer.

Amber hued with a light haze of fine sediment. There's a fingernail of creamy off white on top. Heavy lacing. Aroma is very piney and dank. The taste is much more a blend of very bitter citrus and piney hops with some light malt to keep things in line. The mouth is chewy and sticky.

Acquired via trade from CapCollector16 so a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color with a medium dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains floral hops, fruity citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out starts out with a strong but not over-powering piney hops bitterness that is quickly followed by sweet flavors of citrus and caramel. The malt character is hearty and brings a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, decent kick, very good representation of style, this is a very solid IPA to drink for a long time.

Clear deep golden pour, with a fine head with good retention. The smell is hop forward, mostly citrus and tropical fruits, together with honey. Tastes like grapefruit, papaya, a bit of mango, lime, honey. Slightly unbalanced towards bitter, but that's a plus, from my perspective. Smooth mouthfeel, moderate carbonation and a bitter-sweet finish.

Bottle: Poured a deep golden color ale with a nice large foamy had with good retention. Aroma of citrusy hops with light tropical fruits. Taste is also dominated by a big rush of citrusy hops and some tropical fruits notes with some residual sugar notes. Body is full with great carbonation. Well enjoyable IPA with limited bitterness and loads of nice huge floral notes. It is also nice to get a chance to taste this hops on its own.

O - fun to try something from Toppling Goliathn. I will buy this again if given the opportunity. I also hope to try more of their beers in the future.

Classic West Coast IPA aroma with a fruity quality and the golden promise seems to add a bit of sweetness to the base that is nice too. White head and a golden body.
Again with a classic west coast taste with a smooth and growing bitterness but no excess. Enjoyable fruit from the hops. Great malt foundation that keeps is balanced for style.
A little much on the carbonation, otherwise a moderate feel.
Again with classic. Nicely done.

Poured from a 12oz bottle (bottled on July 2015, couldn't see what day because the stamping was smeared) into a Spiegelau IPA glass.
LOOK: Pours with a finger and a half worth of white foam that shrivels down into a half finger's worth after 1 minute and 40 seconds. Honey orange in color. There is a moderate amount of small and medium-sized rising bubbles. There are also a few medium-sized bubbles sitting on the bottom of the glass. Lacing is thick and high.
SMELL: There are mild aromas of mangos, peaches, papayas, apricots, oranges, grapefruits, and sweet bready malts.
TASTE: Initial taste is of mild piney hops (not sure where those came from) and sweet bready malts. Subtle citrusy hop flavors enter right after along with hints of the fruit that were detected in the smell. Alas, mild bitter hops finish off the flavor about 3 seconds after the intial flavors.
FEEL: Medium-bodied with hints of carbonation. Goes down smooth and finishes with a strong dryness.
NOTE: This tasted nothing like what the smell would of told me. The fruit flavors from the hops weren't strong enough. Just based on taste, this was an slightly above average American IPA.

A 12 fl oz bottle bottled on 30th June 2015 and poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Appearance: Poured a slightly hazy golden orange colour with a two finger creamy white head that had good retention and nice lacing.

Aroma: Rich tropical fruits especially mango, pineapple, peach and apricot with a hint of sweet citrus like mandarin.

Taste: Light tropical mango upfront which gives way to sweet caramel malt and sweet citrus mandarin before ending with a light grapefruit peel bitterness finish.

Mouthfeel: Sharp, crisp, medium bodied with mid to high carbonation.

Overall: A very solid IPA with great aromas. Taste was sweeter than I expected and I prefer more bitterness in my IPAs, but this was still very good.

Pours golden (as the name might suggest) with a two finger head, mild carbonation. Smell is hoppy, earthy, citrus, and herbal. Taste is crisp and hoppy, not overly bitter or citrusy. Light bitter finish. Not overly complex, but pretty solid.

Poured from the bottle into a Spigelau IPA glass. Bottled Sept 1st 2015.

Basically what a perfect looking IPA can be. Deep supper clear body, with a flame like centre glow and crystal edges, fine streams of pinhead carbonation, and a glowing brass perfect tangerine orange body color, lighter and brighter towards the sides. Head is creamy, big and froths even bubbled to four fingers. Island puck top with creamy retention, hardly even budging with pill like sheet s of lacing and streams on the side. One of the most perfect looking IPAs I've seen. Total goldilocks looking brew.

Jesus, that aroma. Hints of soft weed to dank and fleshy fruit, almost grapefruit quality but something more exotic smelling. Cedar like wood tones with great sweet woody almost bbq'd and fat dipped smells, mixing with large amounts of black tea. Sweet woody tannic and inviting, highly memorable, and just a touch of sweet malt.

Palate manages to keep more of the same qualities but a more focused and less complicated hop presence. Tea like soft flavors of black and green, slightly bringing out some herbal sweetness. Finishes with tannic sweet character, and loads of black tea softness. Moderate carbonation, just a hint juicy but not quite even aching towards some wet body.

A real great take on some soft IPA qualities, wish the depth was a bit more here but really not many complaints.

Bottled on 7/1/15, reviewed on 7/28/15. Brewed and bottled in Lakeland, FL
A: Moderate pour yields 1/2 finger of decent white head that dissipates fast. Hazy golden liquid is the perfect color for an IPA in my book.
S: Mango, dried pineapple, tangerine. Man Candy! OMG!
T: Slight tropical fruit with floral notes. Herbal and grapefruit rind. A bit sweet, very nice though.
M: Perfect level of bitterness for an AIPA.
O: Delicious. Great on a hot day. A tad strong feeling for more than 1 or 2 ( or maybe I am dehydrated). I love it.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: rich orange hue with a light haze and a light effervescence. Head is a finger of frothy ivory foam. Pretty attractive indeed!

Smell: rich fruity hops with a dash of pine; the overall effect is very tropical with mango and pineapple along with tangerine and grapefruit. Yum!

Taste: a nice continuation of what's on offer in the aroma, with a lightly sweet, very fruity flavor finishing with a relatively mild bitterness. Bright, fresh and delicious.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a big carbonation and huge creaminess that is massive for the style. Woo!

Overall: what a great beer. I just wish it were distributed in my state.

Has a cloudy golden color, with a beautiful head about a finger thick.

The smell is full of fresh hops with a clear pine-cone flavor. Just a delightful smell.

This is a beer with attitude if I ever had one. The floral hops come out swinging as soon as the beer enters your mouth, and lingers for quite some time. This beer made my tongue tickle out of the taste sensation. Balance goes out of the window, but this is an extraordinary beer.

Pours a clear, gold color. One inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong hops, strong floral hops, sweet malt, slight alcohol, and a hint of rye. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong hops, strong pine, sweet malt, slight alcohol, hint of rye, and hint of floral notes. Overall, great appearance, good aroma, body, and blend.

A - Pours a golden orange with a two-finger foamy white head. The head leaves tons of sticky lacing.

S - Aroma is tangerine, mango, and floral hops.

T - The taste starts with tangerine and mango upfront with a light malty sweetness. There is a nice earthy hoppiness midpalate through the finish.

M - Medium bodied with medium/high carbonation. Mouthfeel is smooth with a crisp dry finish.

O - This is my first Toppling Goliath experience and it doesn't disappoint. This is a very good IPA.

Date on the bottle of 9/1/15.

Appearance: Mostly translucent golden/caramel color with a thin off-white head.

Aroma: Classic mix of caramel malt and slight citrus.

Taste: The balance is fantastic between the sweet caramel and bold earthy bitterness. Citrus on the finish rounds out the hop character. Aftertaste of ebbing earthy bitterness. Adequate depth of flavor for 6% ABV. Reminiscent of 60 Minute and Celebration.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with unobtrusive carbonation. Good drinkability.

Final Thoughts: An example of how great beers can be made with few ingredients. A no frills american IPA that's solid all around. Would I drink it again? Yes.

I am still new to the IPA market, but TGB Golden Nugget is a very good one. Maybe I'm biased because I live in Iowa, but I have yet to have a disappointing beer from TGB. By most of their ratings, I don't think it's just me.
Give Golden Nugget a try, you'll be happy you did.
