Brewed by:
Toppling Goliath Brewing Company
Iowa, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Zelicious single-hop showcase using the Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand. Delightfully confusing aromas of citrus and mandarin oranges give way to an incredibly complex body of earth tones and marigolds. This is truly unlike any hop you’ve ever tasted.

One of the more overlooked hoppy TG beers, most shoot for the stars and hype up sue and its variants but I'd say this is TG's second best hoppy beer, behind double citra sue. Delicious citrusy hop notes but not overwhelming, does so much for so little ABV.

22 oz bottle was poured into a nonic glass.

Appearance: It is a slightly hazy orange yellow color with good clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the. A two finger billowy head was poured that reduced to a thin puffy layer. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Citrus, grapefruit, sauvignon grapes, earthy, pungent, grassy, caramel, and toasted malts.

Taste: The hop flavor definitely pulls more through on the palate. Nice malt bill, lasting hop flavor, and light tingly bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light, crisp, refreshing, rolling hop flavor, crushable, and light light bitterness.

Overall: For a single hop Nelson Sauvin IPA, I am a big fan. Nice job Toppling Goliath. Looking forward to more of this in the future

Was very lucky to have a chance to try this beer....i have a great neighbor who has a colleague whom has family near TG. This beer poured an unfiltered copperish with white head that left a spotty lace. The scent had tangerine like notes. The taste was evenly balanced and very easy to drink. It reminded me of the Tazmanian IPA from Schlafy. The Mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it's an excellent beer!

Bomber bottle poured into a snifter.
L: Hazy, light copper with a surprisingly large head (1.5 fingernails) that was fluffy/thin but stayed around a long while.
S: Pineapple, Grapefruit, pine.
T: Bitterness that you can tell is there but is also well muted. This is a little more earthy than a Massachusetts juice bomb - the taste reminded me a lot of Alchemist's Focal Banger. Maybe even more dank than FB. Very enjoyable.
F: Medium. Fluffy. Definitely not thin, but not chewy by any means. Slight amount of carbonation, but less than I thought there'd be given how long the head stayed around.
O: Great beer. Like I said, the closes resemblense I've had is Focal Banger - which is a good thing. Wish I bought more than 1!

Opaque yellow-orange with a large fluffy white head leaving tons of spongey lace and a permanent fluffy blanket.

Smell is very crackery and peppery, with lemon, pineapple, peach and slightly dank cannabis.

Taste is bitter pine and grapefruit, with vanilla cream, pineapple, peach, and peppery cracker.

ZeeLander is pretty bitter, but tries to be balanced with fruitiness and a very dry finish.

Received from @Josholson666 in NBS BIF #4 – Thanks man!
Undated bottle at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter
Aroma - Grapefruit
Head large (Maximum 4.5 cm, semi-aggressive pour), off white, frothy, diminishing to an irregular two to four mm ring and a heaped rocky island
Lacing – excellent – multiple rings of tiny to small bubbles which connect by short thin stalactites
Body – very cloudy, light yellow, almost glowing
Flavor – grapefruit, grapefruit, grapefruit! One of the best grapefruit IPAs I’ve ever had! No malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl, just hops, hops, hops!
Palate – medium, slightly oily, lively carbonation.

Appearance 4.5, Aroma 5, Flavor 4.5, Palate 4.5, Overall 5.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a snifter... Twice.

A: Pours a slightly hazy, darkish orange-copper color. Two-inch, white, foamy head which diminishes at a slow rate. Light, thin, white lacing that sticks around throughout.

S: Mostly fruity aromas of pineapple, mango, and peach along with some citrus elements of grapefruit and orange. A very slight piney hoppiness comes through as well, but fruity aromas are definitely the main act.

T: Taste is almost exactly the same as the aromas. This is definitely a juicy IPA first and foremost. Fruit and citrus elements including notes of pineapple, tropical fruits, grapefruit, and orange are present up front, which are followed by a nice mild hoppy bitterness that lingers after each sip goes down. Bitterness nicely combats the overall sweetness of the brew.

F: Light-medium bodied, smooth, with great carbonation. Slightly dry at the end.

O: Awesome single-hop IPA. So glad I was able to try this for the first time. It reminds me somewhat of Scorpius Morchella, which I was able to try prior to this and loved. Would definitely go for this one again and it definitely ranks among the best of TG single-hop IPAs IMO.

Pours a cloudy orange tinged color with a nice two finger white head that dissipated leaving some lacing and a thin film on top of the beer.

Smell had aromas of orange zest, orange rind, tangerine and white wine like notes. Very subtle and delicate aromas, but all are discernible.

Taste follows the nose with an initial array of flavors that include orange, tangerine, orange zest - all subtle and delicately complimentary giving way to a flavors reminiscent of white wine, green grapes and a hint of oak. Finishes with a nice bitterness that is not overpowering. The flavors are quite delicate, but still "pop" - its not an in your face IPA, but rather the flavors slowly develop on the palate gently providing a wonderful white win like IPA. Truly unique.

Feel had medium carbonation providing a slight tingle initially. Slight drying feel on the mount reminiscent of wine tannins.

Overall a really nice and unique IPA. Great flavors, definitely worth trying if you get a chance.

Bomber dated 5/17/2016 poured into snifter on 5/29/2016

L: Beautiful deep orange. Somewhat opaque, but not hazy. roughly 1.5 fingers of white head. Moderate lacing.

S: The nose is a little subtle. Definitely citrus, but maybe more so the rinds of citrus. Subtle, but engaging. Inviting or intriguing, almost.

T: Wow. Excellent flavor profile. Quite bitter, but in the best way. Not over aggressive, but gives the tongue a slight jab. Citrus rinds. Beautiful tropical fruits. Again, quite bitter.

F: This one doesn't coat the mouth so much as dries the mouth out a bit. I like it.

Overall, another excellent IPA from TG - I don't think they make a bad beer!

Poured a hazy orange with a thick white head. Looks a lot like a Belgian wheat beer. The aroma is strong dank and apricot. Taste is grapefruit and orange peel at first followed by a mellow bitterness. Perfect carbonation with a medium texture. Overall this is a very solid IPA. Quite different from a Citra citrus bomb but very good.

This beer pours a super cloudy cloudy dark golden orange. Reminds me of dark white grapefruit juice or light apple cider. The head is big fluffy and white. Excellent retention and lots of spotted lacing. Smell is very complex. Grape and candied orange are most noticeable, with a slight hint of lemon and pine as well. Taste is similar with not much bitterness. Feel is light side of medium, smooth and almost creamy. Overall an awesome beer. Nelson hops continue to amaze and mystify me.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 22 oz bomber on January 13, 2016. Tasted again from a 22 oz bomber on January 8, 2017. Look is hazy orange with a thick white head and lingering lacing. Smell is bitter citrus, orange blossom, fresh cut pine and earthy scents. Taste is grapefruit, mandarin, pine and bread malt flavors. Feel is full in body and while initially bitter, the finish is smooth.

How can something this low in ABV taste so flavorful. The Nelson hops seem nicely featured. Slightly earthy taste and a nice light bitter finish. Could drink this all day, especially in the summer.

Grabbed this on my last trip thru Iowa.
A - Pours an opaque orange with 2 inches of white head that settles slowly with a fair amount of lacing.
S - Aroma is potent, a nice strong apricot.
T - Juicy, lots of citrus that leads into bready malts and some bitterness on finish.
M - Medium mouth feel and carbonation. Slightly creamy.
O - An excellent well balanced beer. I'm finding I really like IPA's using Nelson Sauvin hops. I will buy Zeelander every time I find it.

Had at the source, received in a pint glass.

3.5 A: Well hazed orange with a touch of brown. Came nearly full but it did leave a short ring of lacing.

4.0 S: Dank resiny hops foremost with a strong orange and nondescript citrus. Neutral maltiness. Secondarily grassy with just a touch of spice.

3.75 T: This has the most IBUs of any of their current offerings and it shows, though it's still only a heavy moderate bitterness. Clean neutral malts with strong grassy and resiny hop flavor. Underneath there is citrus and earthiness.

3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Like most of their brews, this is somewhat bity but super smooth overall.

3.75 D: Another solid beer, but so many hoppy pales and IPAs that I'm thinking I need a break!

Drank from a 22 fl oz bottle acquired in a trade with Oldskool47
OUTATIME 10/21/15
Served in a pint glass

Outstanding appearance. The completely opaque, yellow ochre liquid was topped by a super tight, creamy and frothy, two-finger tall, light tan crown. Terrific head retention and ridiculous amounts of lacing. Thick, drippy rings coated the glass and stuck around long after the beer was finished.

The aroma was pure Nelson Sauvin hop goodness. Super dank and musty. Intense white wine notes. Sauvignon Blanc certainly came to mind. Tropical fruits were noticeable. Papaya was most apparent. Mango was detectible as well. Peach notes also came through strong.

The flavor was very similar to the nose. Super hoppy. Very juicy and fruity. Orange and clementine appeared up front. Again, white wine notes were quite apparent. Somewhat tart. Slightly lemony. Hint of tropical fruitiness. Mango was most noticeable. Loads of peach flavor as well. White grapefruit appeared in the finish. Hint of rind. Just a touch pithy and bitter. All in all, fantastically well balanced and amazingly drinkable.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied. Super creamy and slick on the palate. The liquid contained a fine, zippy effervescence that gave the beer a nice frothiness.

I am an enormous fan of Nelson Sauvin hopped beers, and Toppling Goliath really blew me away with this single-hopped IPA. These guys definitely take their hazy, dank, Northeast-style pale ales, IPAs and double IPAs to the next level. In my experience, every one of their beers has been nothing less than spectacular.

Bottled on 10/30/15.

Appearance: Super murky orange, which is a stark contrast from the usually bright beers I've had from TG. Poured a good finger and a half of off-white froth.

Aroma: That's nelson alright! Tons of dank citrus and pine with an intangible edge to it. Hop bomb.

Taste: Not the flavor I was expecting based on the aroma. Still, quite good and a fairly complex mix of earth and pine, which combine with the slight sweetness of the malt for a nice spicy kick. The bitterness is right on that threshold of being intense but not over done. The dank citrus from the aroma comes through in the finish and lingers in the aftertaste along with ebbing bitterness. Good depth of flavor for 5.5% ABV, although the modest alcohol content does hold the malt department back from fully complimenting the hop bill.

Mouthfeel: On the thinner side, which is one area where this one falls a bit short. The carbonation is a little too busy, but it has good drinkability.

Final Thoughts: A VERY good beer and yet another one of TG's brews that toes the line between APA and IPA with great results. All of TGs IPAs I've tried have been outstanding. Do not pass on this or any of their beers. Would I drink it again? Yes.

Bottled 10/30/15 so relatively fresh.
Look: The beer pours a beautiful light orange with a thick white head. The beer is opaque and juice like in appearance. There appears to be little carbonation coming up.
Smell: Heavenly. There are some earthy smells and maybe a little grape scents as well. The hops seem to dominate. I get some passion fruit.
Taste: Still some earthy tastes but it becomes much sweeter, fruitier with some of that grape like quality. There's a slight bitterness near the end, but it's pretty minimal to me.
Feel: This is a nice thicker feel for an IPA, and has a dry finish.
Overall: This is a winner for me. I pick this up almost every time I see it.

Bomber dated 10/30/15 making it 3 weeks old, poured into a tulip glass. Looks pretty gorgeous, a deep golden orange with a 2-finger white head that drops down to about a half-inch and never quits. Nice lacing. Hazy but it's bottle conditioned, so I probably stirred up some yeast on the pour.

Smell is oranges and grapefruit at first, along with some other undefined tropical fruit, which progresses to an earth spicy quality, almost like rye. Taste is similar, with an addition of breadiness toward the finish, which then turns spicy and just the slightest bit bitter. As I get toward the bottom of the glass, the dank makes itself known. Finish is more juicy than dry, and doesn't last super long.

The feel is totally right on for me--smooth without being watery, with substantial body that doesn't inhibit drinkability.

This is a fantastic beer, well worth seeking out.
