Muddy brown in color, with little head; caramel, oak, maybe a little coffee on the nose; oak and caramel dominate the taste, some dark fruit lingers on the palate. I do get alcohol--easy to believe this new bottling is 8.2%. Don't really get any IPA characteristics other than a vague bitterness--tastes more like a BA scotch ale. Something different (for me) and very enjoyable.

The oak! The oak!

I've never had an IPA with the barrel so prominent. This beer definitely stood out for me.

L - amber with a nice head that swelled, then dissipated. Not a "sticky" IPA.
S - made me sniff and go back again several times. The oak comes first, but then it is also obvious there is IPA sharpness.
T - standout flavor. Oak and vanilla. Then bitter too. Malt too! All in good balance.
F - smooth. not the dominant trait
O - again. exceptional. Lots of oak and I think this flavor is celebrated in the IPA form without bourbon of many BBA stouts. Cool!

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/9/2016. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big grapefruit, orange peel, peach, pear, pineapple, light pepper/pine, vanilla, caramel, toffee, toasted oak, brown sugar, biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, light grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, oak, and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange peel, peach, pear, pineapple, light pepper/pine, vanilla, caramel, toffee, toasted oak, brown sugar, biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, light grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/pine bitterness and oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange peel, peach, pear, pineapple, vanilla, caramel, toffee, toasted oak, brown sugar, biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, oak, and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/tannic mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming for 8.2%. Overall this is an outstanding oak aged English DIPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, oak, and dark/bready malt flavors; with smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Very unique for the style, but very complex from the prominent oak influenced flavors. A highly enjoyable offering.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of off white head that settles into a thin patch.

Smell: A toasty and fairly sweet malt forward aroma with a scent of oak and caramel. Upfront barrel scent of oak, vanilla, and wood. Toasted barley malt with hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, oats, nuts, and yeast. Also some roasty hints of cocoa, coffee, and smoke. Earthy and floral hops with some hints of grass. Sweet hints of brown sugar. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a toasty and sweet malt forward taste with notes of oak barrel and caramel malt. Barrel notes of oak, vanilla, and wood. Toasted malt with notes of biscuit, caramel, toffee, oatmeal, nuts, and yeast. Some nice light roasty notes of coffee, cocoa, and smoke. Background earthy and floral hop notes. Sweet taste of brown sugar. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, silky, and pretty smooth.

Overall: A pretty good Oaked Ale. Hops are pretty subtle even for the English IPA style but the oaked malt flavors are very good.
