Brownish amber, with a less than one finger tan head, which has decent retention, and leaves spotty lacing. The aroma has plenty of oak, caramel, toasted malt, vanilla, and citrus. Doesn't smell like an IPA, but it does smell good.

Lots of oak in the taste with caramel, toasted malt, vanilla, citrus, and coconut. Just like with the aroma, it does not taste like an IPA, but it does taste good.

Medium bodied with average carbonation. Has a caramel and oak aftertaste. A unique English IPA, and also a good tasting one.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of off white head that settles into a thin patch.

Smell: A toasty and fairly sweet malt forward aroma with a scent of oak and caramel. Upfront barrel scent of oak, vanilla, and wood. Toasted barley malt with hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, oats, nuts, and yeast. Also some roasty hints of cocoa, coffee, and smoke. Earthy and floral hops with some hints of grass. Sweet hints of brown sugar. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a toasty and sweet malt forward taste with notes of oak barrel and caramel malt. Barrel notes of oak, vanilla, and wood. Toasted malt with notes of biscuit, caramel, toffee, oatmeal, nuts, and yeast. Some nice light roasty notes of coffee, cocoa, and smoke. Background earthy and floral hop notes. Sweet taste of brown sugar. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, silky, and pretty smooth.

Overall: A pretty good Oaked Ale. Hops are pretty subtle even for the English IPA style but the oaked malt flavors are very good.

L: pours a caramel brown with a thin head that dissipates fairly quickly
S: sweet Caramel and oak. A pleasant balanced smell.
T: Sweeter than expected. The sweetness comes up front with huge oak after that. The finish is moderately bitter with a slight taste of alcohol. Definitely more malt driven. Makes sense its not labeled an IPA anymore.
F: smooth with moderate carbonation. goes down easy

O: I really liked this beer. Wasn't sure what to expect and was happy I picked up a bomber of this at TG. Really does not taste like an IPA but if you enjoy a good oak beer, this is a good choice.

A truly unique offering. Not so much to style really, but such a great brew. Aroma and flavor all over, coffee, roast nut, earth peat, tobacco. A wonderful drinker that can really span a few styles, though hop heads will be disappointed, but it is not an American IPA to begin with.

2015 vintage reviewed on 8/5/15. 22 oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Moderate pour yields 1/2 finger off white head with fair retention. Cloudy brown liquid with greenish gold halo. Simply ugly liquid. Minus points for looking like swamp water.
S: Coffee, cocoa, vanilla, toffee, bright citrus here and there. Smells like a nice nut brown with coffee or a porter. Doesn't seem to be to style, but it is SO nice.
T: Cocoa, grapefruit, evergreen, vanilla, butter pecan, toffee, mocha.
M: Terrific - silky while respectably bitter. Lots of bitterness in the finish. Dry finish is grapefruity with pithy bitterness/drying.
O: Very nice. I expected an IPA but it seems nothing like that (in my experience). Despite that, it is superb. I want it again. I'd order another pint and buy again. Good in a 22oz format.
