Notes: Set sail with 1492! This unique single-hop IPA is brewed with all Columbus hops. Expect a bold, dank body, strong earthy aroma and a dry herbal bitterness that pack a mighty punch in the finish.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a chalice. Bottle date is 05/27/15.

Appearance: Pours a hazy yellowish golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of white head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A dank, earthy, and juicy hop forward aroma with hints of citrus fruit and pine. Pine resin and grassy hops with some hints of cannabis. Citrus fruit hints of grapefruit, orange, lemon, pineapple, mango, and melon. Pale malt hints of cracker, biscuit, caramel, and yeast. A very solid hoppy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a dank, juicy, and earthy hop dominated taste with notes of pine, grass, and citrus. Earthy and herbal hops with some notes of pine resin and grass. Citrus fruit notes of orange, grapefruit, pineapple, melon, and lemon. Background pale malt notes of biscuit, cracker, caramel, and yeast. A really good hoppy taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, chewy, and pretty drying on the finish.

Overall: Another very good single hop showcase from Toppling Goliath. Good dank hop flavors of herbs, pine, and citrus.

Poured from a bomber, so presumably a Decorah brewed 1492

Look: 1492 pours a nice hazy golden, with a fluffy white head appearing up top, but it is maybe half a fingers width. Carbonation is ample, and bubbles periodically flow towards the top.

Smell: a lemon, citrus dominated nose starts the aroma off, and after a swirl I get some nice tangerine/orange notes.

Taste: the lemon and orange meld together at the start of this beer, some melon pops up, and mid palette dankness comes in hard. The finish is almost all earthy dank flavors and some pepper. About the best I've seen Columbus hops utilized.

Feel: the mouthfeel is medium full, slightly creamy, with some drying and bitterness in the finish. The beer still is fairly soft compared to the majority of IPA.

Overall: I've had the Brew Pub version of 1492, and, while I like the contracted version, the Decorah brewed version adds complexity in taste, a hazier look, and a bit softer of a mouthfeel. If you see the bomber form of 1492, grab it, and prepare yourself for a treat.

This was good, but much lighter than I wanted it to be. At 6%, it's missing that IPA kick I love. Good beer, but golden nugget is the IPA to have from TG(or King Sue).

Appearance: Pours slightly hazy, the amber liquid capped by a couple of inches of foam; excellent stickage and plenty of lace

Smell: Dank and herbal, with some modest tropical fruit and grapefruit tones

Taste: Tropical fruit (papaya) and grapefruit pith, up front, with the herbal dankness building through the middle; building bitterness, without much fruit, and a dry finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Well, it showcases the Columbus hops nicely, but with all of the exciting new hop varieties I feel that time has passed the Columbus hop by; OK for a blend but not interesting enough to stand on its own

Thanks, knapers03, for the opportunity

I have tried all of the 'regular' beers from TG that have been available to me (over the last few months) with small roadtrips and I think all have rated above 4, a few well above that. Not this one. The beer was bottled on 5/27/15. I bought it less than a week later and have kept it in the fridge. Almost no sound when I popped the cap, very little head. All I could taste was bitter. I didn't get any of the fruit or citrus flavors others talk about. And I am a huge IPA fan, so bitter doesn't bother me, but that is about all this offered. Drinkable, but I'll take anything else I've tried from TG over this.

This was had at the Toppling Goliath taproom. It was served in a shaker pint.

Appearance- The finger of white foam is as thick as a New York cheesecake slice. It has excellent retention; every sip yielded a new ring of lace.

The body is so golden, it is luminous. Somewhere in it's cloudy body is a shining, hop sun.

Smell- Straight up Columbus hop. It gives the impression of slight citrus, but really what stands out is the peppery and herbal character.

Taste- Another impressive IPA on the tongue! The hops are not brutalizing my taste buds into submission, but it is doing a nice job of bittering up the drink.

The flavors start out with some peppery and herbal qualities. As the drink sails along, some passion fruit starts to show itself. The herbal and citrus flavors take their time diminishing at the finish.

About half way through the glass, I actually picked up some sweeter, biscuit malt. Just makes this one all the more drinkable.

Mouth feel- This is a nicely done medium body that is more slick than coating. The carbonation is not over done, and as a result, feels pretty creamy.

Overall- In the end, this single hop offering does not rank quite on the same level as say, Golden Nugget or Alternate Galaxy, and I think that stems from the hop choice itself.

The more peppery and herbal hop is good, but not as bombastic as what TG usually deals with. Still, calling this anything less than good would be doing it a great disservice.

Not quite up to the standard I expected from Toppling Goliath. This is a pretty pedestrian IPA, with no real flaws but nothing spectacular either. It's a nice middle of the week quaffer though.
