Very Good

Notes: Baby get the keys to the Rover Truck. Man, let me get this Oatmeal Stout over, bruh. Ain’t no beer here up in Iowa like it. Bust your big head is what was told to us. Now play it how you say it - I bet ya won’t. I’ll have you drinkin‘ its sweet molasses when I give you what you want. Lookin’ good, doin’ bad, and my nerves bad with it. Drink on up, you know you gonna hit it.

12oz bottle from Justdoit1234 (thanks man!). Bottled 8/11/15. Served in a Toppling Goliath teku.

Pours black with almost two fingers of khaki head. Gradually fades to a narrow halo, leaving surprisingly little lace.

Smells of roast, brown sugar, rolled oats and caramel. Simple, straightforward and pleasant enough.

Taste is a blend of cocoa, burnt caramel, cola, toasted nuts, oats and a vaguely herbal bitterness. No alcohol presence. While the flavors may be slightly more subtle that I typically prefer, this delivers a decent amount of complexity for such a low abv stout.

The fairly light body still comes across a tad creamy and has fairly slight carbonation. Roasty, nutty and dark cocoa aftertaste.

Rover Truck is a solid basic oatmeal stout. There is nothing particularly stand-out about it but it is an easy drinking stout.

from a brewery you want to like because of the ratings, but actually like because the beer is outstanding. i think this one is real under appreciated, and i was lucky to see it up in south dakota all week this week. its super dark, a change of pace for the style, approached a bit differently i think too. it pours like road tar, blacktop sealant, and although the head is nothing to write home about, the beer itself is quite sexy in the glass. smells like molasses, raw and concentrated, with less of the bitter dark malt than a lot of these have, and more of the starchy sweet fresh oats. its thick in texture, surprisingly so for the lower abv, and really caramelized, sweet but in a good way, and well layered with the grains. for me it drinks a little heavy, which i like, and it sticks hard to the teeth. there is bitterness cutting the sweet, coffee beans, raw cacao, and burnt malt. this seems like a beer with a freakishly long boil time, like hours and hours, reducing, concentrating, caramelizing. its a lot of beer in a little bottle, and its as good as their hoppy stuff, but will likely never garner the same attention. really fabulous stout. also the write up on the label is absurd.

Pours a dark brown with a relative modest, half-inch creamy brown head despite a fairly aggressive pour. Head recedes quickly, leaving absolutely no lacing.

Aroma of roasted dark chocolates and dark fruits. Oats come through fairly strong.

Taste of dark chocolate, oats, and dark fruits. Malts strengthen as the beer warms, as caramel malts and oats take over. Has some pleasant smoky, woody notes to it.

Quite thin and watery for a stout, even an oatmeal stout. Relatively high carbonation for a stout, that actually works fairly well with the somewhat more subdued traits of flavor.

Overall, a lesser effort by one of the best breweries out there. Not bad by any means, but surprisingly lacking in character for a brewery with some normally fairly distinctive brews.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black body. Medium khaki head.

Smell - Lots of oatmeal. Chocolate. Dark roasted malt.

Taste - Oatmeal is strong again. Hefty roasted malts. Almost burnt and a little smokey. The slightest bit of sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Very well made. Not gonna be something everyone loves because it just isn't that exciting, but I appreciate that TG can deliver a nice roasted malt flavor without excess sugars.
