PompeiiPompeii
Notes: Inspiration for our newest Hop Patrol IPA comes from the House of Faun in Pompeii, Italy. At this site, some of the world’s most famous mosaics were preserved under layers of ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In this fashion, Pompeii IPA preserves and showcases the luxurious taste of the Mosaic hop. This single-hop IPA offers a floral aroma and a truly complex “mosaic” of taste: dark citrus and pineapple flavors, with deep earthy undertones and a persistent bitterness in the finish.

Finally getting around to sitting down to review this one as well. One of my favorites from TG. Canned 4/17/18.

A hazy, murky, dark orange color with a towering head of 2 fingers, creamy and leaving tons of lace on the glass.

Tons of zesty, crispy fruits on the nose. Pineapple, mango, tangerine, navel orange, lemon.

Wow. Just, wow.. Mango - tons of mango, matched with very tight, crisp biscuit malt, followed by zesty pineapple, tangerine, veiny red grapefruit, navel orange, lemon, and lingering lemon and hop resins.

Feel is crisp and sharp - just massively - like a thousand sharp pins attacking your tongue. This lays a nice carpet for the flavors to dance on. The finish is lingering prickliness and hop oils.

Overall, Pompeii is no slouch. I really think people should give beers like Golden Nugget and Pompeii a hard look over the (well-deservedly) sought after Pseudo Sue. Sue isn't a slouch either, but these beers need more recognition. On second thought, scratch that - leave them all for me!

I still know many people who drink their beer out of a can or bottle. This beer perfectly expresses why drinking out of a glass makes a world of difference. The minute I went in, the floral arrangement overwhelmed me - in a great way. The scent was so inviting, you just have to dive in for a taste. And the taste does not disappoint.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

L: Beautiful amber color, a little lighter in color than its nose suggests. Leaves a thick, spotty bit of lacing on the glass.

S: Tasty, strong mosaic hops quality: smells like honey and lemon.

T: Matches the Smell, but with more strength and a firm note of bitterness on the back end.

Feel: Light, crisp, and juicy. The flavor sits on the tongue for a long time.

O: One of the best IPAs I've tasted since I've taken an interest in the beer I drink. Fantastic stuff!

650ml bottle, served in a TG snifter.

Pours a darker, hazy orange-copper body, thick and substantial one finger white head with nice retention and lacing. Smells of pineapples and grapefruit, mild sweet pale malt without graininess, not a lot of resin; very clean fruity hop aromas that showcase Mosaic well. Flavour is balanced between the tropical fruit, citrus and the pale malt backbone; it's a very smooth combination and blend of hops and malt. The malt is not too forward, but it provides a nice sweetness on top of the tropical fruit qualities. Mild resinous bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium-lighter bodied, soft, mellow tropical fruity bitterness on the backend. The carbonation is a bit lower than I've become accustomed to from TG. Overall, a very solid IPA with a nice balance to it; it's hoppy but doesn't pop like classic Sosus did, but that's not necessarily what I'm looking for here. To sum this up, it's a clean expression of Mosaic hops.

Thanks to irish-hawkeye (Reddit) for this one. Shared with rudzud.

Pours a great fluffy creamy almost 2 finger head that fades slowly with nice soapy lacing, hazy orange juice color.

Nose brings tons of dank citrus hops, a simcoe like dank musty grapefruit with citrus resin and pith, dank tropical fruits with papaya, little grassy oily earthy, citrus and kiwi like hops, even a little melon rind, nice pith.

Taste brings a malty sweet start, toasted soft reddish malts but dry. Then hops, a kiwi like tropical fruit mild earthy grassy note, with more dank fruits, tropical mostly, papaya, hint passion fruit, resinous notes, little grapefruit pith again, touch spicy too. Nice dank tropical fruits mostly, linger for a while, nice dank resin on the back end with lingering musty tropical fruits, little bitter earthy spicy hops, big lingering spicy rind, hint of baking spices too.

Mouth is med bod, decent softness, nice carb.

Overall very nice, great hop profile, nice bitterness, dank resin and musty tropical fruits with nice pith and mild citrus, etc.

Picked-up a four-pack of cans at Kappy's in Norwell for about fourteen dollars. Had only recently heard of this brewery, never tried their brews. Very solid brew, nice change of pace from east-coast IPAs. Looking forward to trying other TG brews.

Look: A lighter golden brown and hazy. Not different from the latest pS batches.

Smell: A little on the fruity and earthy side. Get a little of the blueberry I've heard others mention, but with a little bit of a Zeelander backdrop of that earthy (ever so slightly) oniony goodness.

Taste: Really impressed me here. Just the right amount of hop bite for me, albeit a little low compared to a traditional IPA. Starts a little sweet and fruity, and ends dry, and really lightly bitter.

Feel: Just a hair light in feel for my taste for a traditional IPA.

Overall: Didn't have much expectation, first time trying this one, and the first beer I've tried since the new guard has taken over. If this is a sign of beers to come from TG, they are in good hands. A really interesting tasting, hazy, easy drinking IPA. Kind of like a Mosaic pseudoSue, but (as a friend coined perfectly) "...like pseudoSue, but turned up to 11". I'm admittedly a huge TG fan/supporter, and had some concerns about this batch of beers, but this thing is world class. REALLY hoping Clark and the boys keep making this one.

Cheers!

Nice earthy mosaic nose and taste. Much lighter and less boozy than Sosus, and much easier to drink. Nice, one of my top 3 pale ales from TG!

Appearance: Gold, lots of particles, good head.

Smell: Strong, mix of danky, citrus rind, bit of berries.

Taste: Moderate sweetness and a coating feel. Moderate berry flavor with citrus finish. Mild bitterness. Tasty!

Overall: 1000th review here on BA. Saw a bottle of this and figured it must be fresh since I'd never seen it before. The beer is a nice show of Mosaic hops, the berry-like flavor that they sometimes give comes through pretty well here. Good stuff.

Landing in the oddly familiar but no-man's-land of beer, Toppling Goliath's Pompeii is such an enigma because of it's IPA style-sake that's far too mild in alcohol to qualify, but isn't quite a session IPA either. Too hoppy and too dry for American pale ale- whatever Pompeii is, it's working for me.

Underneath that hazy golden hue and its arid swath of foam, the ale billows over with juicy tropical and citrus flavors with an exotic herbal weave that nods ever so gently to wafts of cannabis. Its dry caramel taste is short and delicate, seeming of mild honey before dissolving effortlessly on the palate.

The middle palate is all about the hops and supple creamy underpinning. Pink grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, mango, pineapple and passionfruit all carry that majestic culmination that only Mosaic hops guarantee. As the tropical flavors trail, its herbal essence garners steam and eventually finishes bitter with muddled botanical herbs, including those dank cannabis flavors.

Dry to the bone, the light bodied IPA carries an arid structure across the palate as the ale seemingly dissolves on the throat, leaving behind an aura of fruit, herb and a smooth citrusy bitterness that lingers deeply in aftertaste.

Canned on 11/13/19. 16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy and cloudy yellowish golden; white head that fades leaving solid retention and lacing. The aromas have a subtle blend of citrus and floral notes. Some bread and crackers. Malts are there. The flavors basically follow the nose. More floral notes. Some orange along with some hints of grapefruit. Some mild hints of cream in the mix. Some fresh grass. Moderate bitterness along with a subtle sweetness. Finishes juicy. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's very sharp, spritzy, crisp and smooth.

This is a solid brew. It's definitely a "New England IPA". The hop aromas and flavors open up a bit as it slightly warms. It also seems more like a citra IPA than a mosaic IPA to me. This one is nothing super crazy, in my opinion, but it's still nice. It's enjoyable, refreshing and fun to drink. Not bad at all.

Pours nearly clear with a big backwash of foam in the Dogfish Head IPA glass. Aroma and flavors are extremely fruity. Big citrusy notes with a pineapple flavor. Quite sweet and hugely malty, like a DIPA that got shorted on alcohol. More booze might actually help it.

It's more like orange juice after some sipping, somewhat improved by that touch of marmalade bitterness. Some murky flavor to finish, even if it is Mosaic. This is quite tasty to sip awhile, but it does become somewhat cloying to my taste. Happy to see this brewery in the 16 oz can at Crisp Market in San Diego.
