Brewed by:
Toppling Goliath Brewing Company
Iowa, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Inspiration for our newest Hop Patrol IPA comes from the House of Faun in Pompeii, Italy. At this site, some of the world’s most famous mosaics were preserved under layers of ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In this fashion, Pompeii IPA preserves and showcases the luxurious taste of the Mosaic hop. This single-hop IPA offers a floral aroma and a truly complex “mosaic” of taste: dark citrus and pineapple flavors, with deep earthy undertones and a persistent bitterness in the finish.

Best IPA I've ever had

I cant say enough about this beer. It's amazing. Everything about it. The citrus, hops, the balance of the mosiac with the other hops.

Find it... buy all of it!

This beer pours a hop hazy red-orange color. The head is a solid half inch in height, and recedes slowly leaving nice lacing. The aroma is big. t was detectable upon pour. It is full of grapefruit, cantaloupe, musk melon, tangerine, very bright. The taste is similar to the aroma with a chalky-sweet tart candy thing that makes all of the fruit pop. There are also some nice dank melon flavors going on in the finish that contrast well with the bright fruits on the front end. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a velvety texture, and restrained carbonation. Overall, this is one of the best pale ales I've ever tasted. Like most of Toppling Goliath's beers I want more.

Look: A lighter golden brown and hazy. Not different from the latest pS batches.

Smell: A little on the fruity and earthy side. Get a little of the blueberry I've heard others mention, but with a little bit of a Zeelander backdrop of that earthy (ever so slightly) oniony goodness.

Taste: Really impressed me here. Just the right amount of hop bite for me, albeit a little low compared to a traditional IPA. Starts a little sweet and fruity, and ends dry, and really lightly bitter.

Feel: Just a hair light in feel for my taste for a traditional IPA.

Overall: Didn't have much expectation, first time trying this one, and the first beer I've tried since the new guard has taken over. If this is a sign of beers to come from TG, they are in good hands. A really interesting tasting, hazy, easy drinking IPA. Kind of like a Mosaic pseudoSue, but (as a friend coined perfectly) "...like pseudoSue, but turned up to 11". I'm admittedly a huge TG fan/supporter, and had some concerns about this batch of beers, but this thing is world class. REALLY hoping Clark and the boys keep making this one.

This beer pours a slightly hazy pale amber with a medium head. The aromas of pine, grapefruit, guava, and pineapple hit me first. The taste is very fruits, leading with lighter tropical fruits, guava, passionfruit, and pineapple, and ending with a citrus and pine zing. The overall bitterness is low here, but there is not too much malt sweetness to fight, so that works well. The mouthfeel is not at all syrup, but also not dry and thin. This is an awesome beer, and seems to confirm my suspicion that I love mosaic hops.

Draft: Poured a bright orangey color ale with a nice foamy head. Aroma of juicy hops notes of citrus and tropical fruit. Taste consist of intense flavours of juicy hops notes of citrus and tropical fruit with some residual sugar notes and almost no bitterness. Body is about average for style with great carbonation. This one is quite the treat and shows that he brewer was really able to extract as much as possible from the Mosaic hops.

I'm not usually a fan of single hop Mosaic beers but none hold a candle to Pompeii. Mouthfeel and so soft and smooth. Hop aroma is strong and complex, typical Mosaic. Just another world class beer from TG. Really impressed

Pours from the bottle a hazy medium-gold with a dense and creamy white head.
The aroma is loaded with tropical fruit, citrus, pineapple.
Taste is mixed fruit juice: orange, pineapple, tropical fruit and a finishing citrus rind bitter although even that is juicy.
Perfect balancing sweetness.
Mouthfeel is medium and somewhat sticky.
God, this is good.

Look: pours an orange with some small speckles floating a bit. The beer isn't translucent but not especially thick looking either
Smell: I smell some berries and onion. A little catty as well.
Taste: berries, grapefruit, light onion.
Feel: seems somewhat light for mouth feel with very little dryness. Makes me want more!
Overall: one of my favorite IPA's I've had. I've heard this is a baby Sosus so I can only imagine how amazing that is

L: Pours a hazy copper tinted amber under a off-white to cream 2” foam cap that recedes moderately fast and is lacy and clingy.

S: Has a minty, resiny nose with light grains. Hop aromas are medium high, malt aromas are medium low, yeast aromas are low.

T: Starts with a blend of lightly sweetened malt and light caramel, light fruit and an assertive bitterness as hop flavors of mint, spice and traces of anise grow. The hop flavors are very herbal and spicy. The hop flavors and bitterness are medium high. The malt flavors are medium to medium high and the yeast flavors are medium low.

F: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: A very full flavored, minty IPA that is well worth repeating.

22oz bottle, courtesy of Kevin. Many thanks man!

A - Pours a clear yellow/orange, frothy white head. Good lacing.
S - Nice. Fruity, juicy hops. Pineapple, grapefruit, mango.
T - Follows the nose. Tons of fruit-forward hops, but not too bitter. Touch of pine. Tasty.
M - Medium body, smooth and creamy. Drinkable.
O - Outstanding. Hop forward aromas and flavors, yet remarkably balanced. A top IPA, IMO.

This is one of my favorite Mosiac hopped beers.
L: Hazy straw color
S: Big juicy nose. Has a juicy but dry smell to it. Slight fruit
T: Dank, piny, slight fruit, dry, nice hop bill
F: Medium bodied. Solid
O: Love this brew!

What an aroma on this beer! It filled the room with a soft citrus/tangerine cloud. Taste was dank & tropical...my favorite combo. An absolute terrific pale ale from TG.

L (4.25) - A nice orange-yellow color with a bit of haze. Makes sense for the beer.
S (4.5) - Fantastic hop aroma. Really get the floral notes. Very enticing.
T (5) - Tastes better than it smells! Definitely get the floral stuff, but fairly well balanced. Mine was quite fresh, but I can't think of any way for it to be better. No bitter or weird aftertastes either.
F (4.25) - Good carb level and quite drinkable.
O (4.75) - I was excited for this one, and it held true. This has set the bar quite high for any other beer out there. Sadly, I don't have any more left . . .

Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass.

L: Beautiful amber color, a little lighter in color than its nose suggests. Leaves a thick, spotty bit of lacing on the glass.

S: Tasty, strong mosaic hops quality: smells like honey and lemon.

T: Matches the Smell, but with more strength and a firm note of bitterness on the back end.

Feel: Light, crisp, and juicy. The flavor sits on the tongue for a long time.

O: One of the best IPAs I've tasted since I've taken an interest in the beer I drink. Fantastic stuff!

Golden color and hazy appearance with an off-white head and good retention. Big grapefruit and pine aroma. Taste follows with additional sweetness and citrus/tropical fruits (picking up some mango). Very nice body and balance. Medium pine bitterness that finishes clean. A great beer.

L: Golden, slightly cloudy, head disappears quickly.

S: Smell is fantastic. Pineapple, Orange, Mango...

T: Taste delivers on the tropical promise but adds some earthy undertones of dirt and mild hay. Minimal bitterness.

F: Well carbonated and somewhere between thin and medium mouthfeel.

O: Another massive victory for TG.

Poured from bomber into an IPA glass. Nice light golden-amber color with ample carbonation and well-retained finger of head. Aroma is fantastic, that's the mosaic talking...it's mango, it's juicy, it's floral, there's citrus and stonefruit. The taste is all of those things, but with a little caramel malt balance, maybe just a touch more than I'd care for. But still terrific. Overall, it may not quite be on the level of Sosus, but it's much easier to get around here, and it really isn't far off at all.

Bottle from John's Grocery in Iowa City, IA. This store is a must stop if you're in the area.

Hazy orange body with an inch of white head. Oh the aroma...what a showcase for the lovely Mosaic hops. Teeming with tropical fruit and citrus. Delightful palate. Mango, orange, juicy melon. Smooth and tangy. Outstanding.

Had a couple of bombers over the last month and this is turning into one of my favorite beers. Has a very hoppy taste but is different than a PsuedoSue or Zombie Dust which I guess is expected due to the hop choice (single hopped mosaic over citra). Overall just a great earthy bold taste that goes down really well. I find myself craving one as I am writing this review. Cool bottle to boot. In my top 5 of all time easily.

I have yet to try anything bad from Toppling Goliath. They always impress
Pour - amber color with a thick, thick, head
Smell - pineapple, pine, hoppy, fruity
Taste - best IPA I've had yet. The mosaic hops are amazing adding a nice mixed fruit flavor.Still need to try King Sue, Sosus, and the other big shots
Overall - Go out of your way to find this one

L:Wow. What a beautiful beer. Deep golden orange. Nice 1-1.5 finger of head. Pretty decent lacing as well. Really nothing I would fix, I just have a hard time giving anything a 5 in case I find something better haha.

S:The aroma is ripe, juicy mango with some nice floral bouquet supporting it. This is 6 weeks old and I would die to get a fresh aroma.

T: Bright, ripe mango and berries on the palate. Doesn't really have much of a bitter profile at all. Who doesn't love mosaic hops?! Again, 6 weeks old but tastes so freaking ripe and delicious. Can't imagine how great it would taste 5 weeks ago!

F: Very pleasant coating. Thin, not overbearing, but begs you to keep sipping.

Overall, this is an unbelievable, world-class brew. If this were available year round and had decent distribution this would be my go-to beer. Wow. Nothing short of excellent.

Going through my past rating on this beer of a 3.83 I honestly can't believe I gave it that low? I must have been thinking of another beer.
This is one of my favorite IPAs of all time. Another home run for TG
Beautiful vibrant orange color with a touch of haziness
Sweet, dank, slight bitterness, pineapple, citrus, herbal, NO oniony mess that some mosaics can be. Perfect work with the mosaic hop.

22oz bomber dated 4/8/16 consumed 6/8/16. Slightly hazy pour to 2 shakers produces a straw yellow beverage with a 1 finger head, no lacing. Floral and fruity nose, mango, pineapple. Malt sweetness combines beautifully with the hops giving a well balanced, grapefruit, juicy, a bit dank and bitter. Medium body and carbonation.
