Notes / Commercial Description:
Inspiration for our newest Hop Patrol IPA comes from the House of Faun in Pompeii, Italy. At this site, some of the world’s most famous mosaics were preserved under layers of ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In this fashion, Pompeii IPA preserves and showcases the luxurious taste of the Mosaic hop. This single-hop IPA offers a floral aroma and a truly complex “mosaic” of taste: dark citrus and pineapple flavors, with deep earthy undertones and a persistent bitterness in the finish.

Good, not great. Certainly not world class.

Surprisingly bold flavor for a single hopped IPA. Consumed it right out of the can, as the alcohol flavor does not become overbearing as the can gets close to being empty. Very consistent taste throughout. Tropical aromas, mild bitterness on the palate. Belching provides very pleasant dank, piney notes. One of my favorite IPA choices.

Pours a very hazy amber with lots of floaties and a pinky of cream colored head. AVerage head retention and lacing

S: Citrus, a little breadyness

T: Pomelo, breadyness, oranges up front. More Pomelo as this warms, plus a little mango. Finishes dry and citrussy

MF: Medium body, moderate carbonation, nice balance

Drinks pretty easy, but not one of my favorites from these guys

Currently #15 in the Top Iowa beers list.

CAN: 16 fl oz. Pull-tab can. No best by date is listed. Boring label art/design (orange and reddish in colour).

"IPA." Served cold into stemware.

HEAD: Fills ~60% of the glass. White in colour. ~10ish cm in height. Frothy. Nicely thick. Smooth. Robust. Head retention is excellent - ~10+ minutes.

BODY: Turbid orange of average vibrance. I see no yeast/lees within.

Appears well carbonated. Could be more vibrant, but overall it's a nice look for an IPA without appearing unique or special.

AROMA: Tangerine, citrusy, floral, fresh, pineapple, dried lime...I'm not getting Mosaic hops' signature blueberry note, but the hop profile does seem well-executed and interesting. Pale malt sweetness is there too, but there's no overt crystal or caramalt. I don't find any lactose sugar or other such nonsense.

Suggests a tasty IPA with a lower ABV than most and a simplistic albeit enjoyable hop profile. I detect no off-notes. Certainly enticing, though aromatic intensity is merely mild.

TASTE & TEXTURE: More tropical than citrusy, though it does hint at mango and tangerine. Floral. Pineapple is in there, but it's not boozy like pineapple tends to seem in IPAs.

Pale malt anchors this simple IPA, keeping any hop bitterness at bay.

Rather simplistic in execution, but enjoyable for what it is in spite of its lack of intricacy. I'm surprised it's a single hop IPA; there's an impressive diversity of hop flavour to it for a single hop IPA...but still, it'd be better with more complexity and diversity of hop flavour. I'd like to see this brewed with more hop varietals.

A bit muted tastewise; the subtlety of each note is nice but a dominant note to give it more focus and direction would be preferable (e.g. blueberry).

Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, refreshing, overcarbonated, and slightly acidic. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

Not a piney, juicy, oily, resinous, or grapefruity IPA. There is a blip of unexpected oniony hop character, which I'd sooner have expected from a Simcoe hopped ale.

OVERALL: It's a likeable IPA, but I don't know that I'd get it again at its high price...Toppling Goliath has obviously hopped on the grossly expensive 4-pack-of-500ml-cans packaging format, and the loser here is the consumer. It isn't just the Johnny-come-lately turbid IPAs that see these insane markups; now it's the IPAs that in yesteryear would have been $12 a sixer.

It well might be Iowa's 15th best beer, but that probably says more about Iowa than it does about the quality of this beer. Compared to the few other beers I've had from Toppling Goliath, this is far from dazzling fare, but it's a respectable little IPA that unnecessarily constrains itself to a single hop to its detriment.

Some may find its lowish ABV and reduced hop pungency bring it more in line with a pale ale than an IPA, but that doesn't bother me so much.

Certainly competent, but it won't stand out in the current oversaturated IPA marketplace and it's far from this brewery's finest ale. Not much of a vehicle for Mosaic's strengths either.

Shoulda bought Psuedosue...

Poured not sure of anything, ABV or date into a 13 oz teku. Pours very hazy yellow, with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves a ton of thin lace behind.

Smell papaya, alricot, tangerine, and grapefruit rind.

Taste follows tropical front to back, a little bitterness in the swallow.

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, soft mouth with just the right amount of life, and extremely drinkable.

Overall holy cow, just top tier stuff!

Picked up a 4-pack of tall boys from Binny’s on Grand Avenue in Chicago on May 11th for $9.99. Canned on 4-17-18.
Finally getting around to reviewing this at home with the final brew of the pack.

Beer poured a cloudy orange with a two-finger soap bubble head that has some great hang time.

Nose is juice forward, orange and pineapple sweetness are present along with some mango.

Taste is mango and pineapple forward over a nice malt base. Finish is orange peel to let you know this is an IPA.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall a solid tropical forward IPA that definitely was worth seeking out and buying!

On tap. Poured hazy. Very New England Style looking. Aroma is fruity and juicy but surprisingly not as intense as I was expecting. Flavor follows suit in both character and intensity level. I look to Toppling Goliath as a brewery that makes beers that are super flavorful and aromatic. This one is a little less dynamic than I want but still good.

Pours a hazy golden color with 1 inch of fluffy white head that retains nicely.

Aroma is of super juicy tropical fruits. Overripe mango and papaya dominate. Light citrus zing, but primarily sweet citrus.

Mouthfeel is creamy with a moderately thick feel. Taste again is pure tropical juice. Overripe papaya and mango with hints of orange zest and juice. Light bitterness on the finish with maybe just a little green hop character. Full of hops yet light and creamy fruit notes with little bitterness.

Overall, I actually think I like this beer more than pseudosue. Definitely in my top favorite IPAs as of late. This paired well with a slightly spicy gumbo ya ya. It gets a 98/100.
