Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Inspiration for our newest Hop Patrol IPA comes from the House of Faun in Pompeii, Italy. At this site, some of the world’s most famous mosaics were preserved under layers of ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In this fashion, Pompeii IPA preserves and showcases the luxurious taste of the Mosaic hop. This single-hop IPA offers a floral aroma and a truly complex “mosaic” of taste: dark citrus and pineapple flavors, with deep earthy undertones and a persistent bitterness in the finish.

Very hazy golden yellow body with a foamy white head and intricate, full lacing along the glass. The nose is nearly pure fruit bliss: mango, pineapple, tangerine, and papaya all meld together and yet remain distinct. There is a mild buttery note, making the whole remind me of some kind of English fruit pastry. The fruit assault continues on the palate, adding a stiff note of hop bitterness. Between the intense citrus notes and a legitimate mildly sweet note, everything is well counterbalanced, although the flavor itself is hugely slanted towards a tropical taste. The body is medium-full, soft, even velvety.
What a treat. The hops were wonderfully represented and although they were along a nearly complete fruity bent still managed to provide a balanced, nearly universally accessible beer. The fact that this is available in a 4x16oz box for $10 is a wonderful feat of brewmastership and capitalism. Hooray USA brewing.

Drank from a 16 oz/1 pint can purchased at Julio’s Liquors, Westborough, MA
Served in a tulip

The nearly clear, medium amber liquid was topped by a tight, foamy, two-finger tall, bright white crown that slowly dropped to a bubbly mass. A thick, frothy collar encircled the liquid. Multiple rings of patchy lacing trickled down the glass and stuck around until the drink’s end.

The nose was hoppy and quite unique. There was an interesting spicy, lemony quality. Slightly herbal. Bit of dankness too. Citrus notes were also apparent. Orange came through strongest and intensified as the beer sat. Malty notes contributed a fair amount of sweetness. The sweetness became more prominent with time.

The flavor was solid but a bit more simplistic than the nose. Juicy orange notes dominated. Candied orange peel came to mind. Some tangerine was noticeable as well. The beer was anchored by a fairly sweet, caramel malt backbone. More orange and orange peel on the back end and in the finish. The beer finished with an old-school, West Coast-inspired mix of fairly intense sweetness and rind-like bitterness.

Creamy, soft and smooth mouthfeel. Medium bodied for the style. The liquid contained a fine, moderate effervescence.

Of the four Toppling Goliath hoppy beers that recently dropped in Massachusetts, Pompeii was probably my least favorite. While the nose was intriguing, the flavor profile was pretty unremarkable. Though I am glad to have access to these beers now, most frankly did not blow me away.

Picked-up a four-pack of cans at Kappy's in Norwell for about fourteen dollars. Had only recently heard of this brewery, never tried their brews. Very solid brew, nice change of pace from east-coast IPAs. Looking forward to trying other TG brews.

C'mon TG, get that canning date and ABV on your labels........ yeesh

L — Pours a slightly hazy golden straw body with a 1.5-finger fluffy white head produced with moderate pour. Great retention and good lacing. Make sure to decant carefully as there is a tremendous amount of floaties that settle to the bottom of the can.
S — Sweet floral, candied citrus peel, yellow grapefruit flesh, pineapple, dank earth, blueberry, bubblegum, touch of creamsicle
T — Juicy orange, grapefruit, mango, resinous earthiness, floral
F — Creamy, fluffy, and super easy drinking. Practically no bitterness beyond a gentle tea-like bite
O — Other than Tree House, the Toppling Goliath hoppy brews I’ve had have the lowest bitterness and softest mouthfeel of any IPA/APA/DIPA I’ve tried. Very fair pricing of ~$12/4-pack of 16oz cans. Significantly better than PseudoSue, IMO

Love the IPAs from Toppling Goliath. This one is one of my new favorites. So happy that TGB products are now available in the Chicago area.

Not as hazy as a TH IPA, mostly clear with some hop sediment, but delivers that juicy NE IPA goodness.

Poured from 22oz bottle into glass. Bottled on date stamped on bottle neck as '03/09/17'.
Clear, gold colored body. Two finger white head settles to thick cap. Lots of spots and strings of lacing. No floating particles.
Citrus aroma (orange, tangerine, and grapefruit) and bready malt.
Taste is citrus and pineapple, and solid malt base. Slight bitterness towards the end, but turns sweet again in the after taste.
Smooth, easy to drink IPA. Medium mouth feel, good carbonation.
Even with its bottle age, this beer still shines through with a solid balance of fruity hops and malt. Quite surprising.

Beautiful clear golden beer that you can see through to the other side with a great foamy off white head. Love the looks.
The smell is piney.
The taste is amazing. It's like pine juice. This is good.
The feeling is wet and sticky.
Overall, give me more
