Poured into a standard pint glass nearly pitch black except for a tinge of reddish brown,a one finger tan colored head atop.Earth and roast with some green leafy hop notes, not overly complex and on the dryer side.Flavors of roast and bitter unsweetened chocolate and charred fruit with low handed leafy hops in the finish.A lighter hopped ABA in my mind,a decent amount of char and pretty dry, pretty average for the style.

330 ml bottle, M and S, Bristol - Pours jet black with a medium tanned head. Nice lacing. Medium carbonation. Aroma - coffee, lactose, caramel/toffee notes, nutty overtones. Taste - Sweetish at the front, coffee notes, roasted malty layers, caramel, dry bitter finish. Very well balanced porter.

33cl bottle. Jet black pour with a bit of beige head that gives way to a sticky lacing. Smells of roasted malts, caramel and cherries. More sweet that I expected, with notes of artificial flavouring, vanilla and dark cherries. Watery.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2017. Given to me a while back as a gift. Contract-brewed in the UK by Brewdog. The label doesn't give much away, but I'm going to presume that this is a porter brewed with NZ hop varieties.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. A very dark brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Good carbonation can be seen when held to the light. Yields a large head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a minute or so before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing.

S: Aroma of resinous hops with hints of pine, weed, citrus peel, roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate, a touch of molasses and earthy yeast. Rather nice.

T: Tastes of bitter aromatic hops with notes of pine resin, dank weed, citrus peel, subtle grapefruit, roasted malt, burnt grain, coffee, cocoa, mild molasses and earthy yeast. A strident, hop-driven bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with spritzy carbonation and a somewhat insubstantial body for the strength. Could be a shade thicker. Hop oils tickle the palate. Aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops, pine, roasted malt, coffee and earthy yeast.

O: Pretty good - a black IPA in all but name. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour deliver a hefty dose of resinous hops and dark malt. Decent body but could be a tad thicker given the ABV. Also wouldn't hurt to have a slightly sweeter malt bill to round it out, but this is splitting hairs. A solid brew - if you like dark hoppy things then give it a whirl.

A dark brown color, this beer seems black to the eye yet shines brown all the way through rather than just at the edges in the light. The medium brown head doesn't rise higher than half a finger, though it does stay at its height for most of the session and leaves bubbly lace on the glass.
The smell is plenty roasty with a bit of cocoa and more mineral than the flavor, the smoke present but also not as strong as in the flavor.
The taste mimics that of a Schwarzbier more than a porter, maybe a rauch but not quite. It's more mineral and earthy, but I appreciate that the roast and cocoa notes do come through and that the smoke has a persistence in the taste but doesn't build up and adds no harshness whatsoever.
The feel is bright, and this is on the light side of medium if the body does reach medium, and I'm not sure it does. It's got the same mineral aspect I detect as a character in the mouthfeel also.

bottle from Premiere Gourmet. Roasty, but thought it was a shwartzbier, which it is posted correctly as I thought on our Dear BA. Satisfying though carbonation right there and not complex. Good drinkability, smooth, not an off-note. Black as night with a little mocha coloured head and lace.

(shared by friends who picked this up in New Zealand). Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is roasty, dark chocolate, and some dark pit fruit. Taste follow suit for the most part with the roasty bitterness noticeable follow by some sweet malts. Medium bodied with an oily texture. Bitter finish. Not bad, but hopped-up dark beers are generally not my thing.

Pours a deep black with a long lasting creamy tan head. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate roasted malt essence. Taste same as aroma with a bit of roasted malt bitterness. A medium body, slightly creamy on the palate. A rich roasted chocolate malt flavor with some mild roasted malt and light hops bitterness. A very good and tasty brew.

Pours black with a large lasting head.
Nose shows caramel, roasted malt, coffee and resinous and piney hops. Pretty amazing.
Very roasty flavours, much less sweet than the aroma suggests. Some piney hops show through, but this is definitely more like a hoppy stout/porter than a black IPA.
Finishes with a big roasty bitterness. Body seems a bit watery and the carbonation is too high.

Barely an ounce of beer hits the glass and it's instantly full of foam. Uh oh. Had to pour it off over the sink, still got a relatively full 25cl glass.

The tan foam looks like a melted milkshake, and forms irregular craggy peaks above the rim of the glass. Color is a dark brown with some mahogany highlights in the light, displaying some clarity also. Super long lasting head, it has a creamy surface texture and maintains its irregular topography.

Aroma is mildly roasty, no off notes are perceptible, it's just relatively mild and certainly not at all hoppy. A little carob or cocoa nib comes through as it warms.

Taste is a letdown, ashy and astringent, overly foamy and then a little watery in feel.
Decent aftertaste of cocoa and ashy roast malt, but the initial impression is too jarring. It feels almost like club soda, and that ain't right. Some porterish notes linger behind, earthy roast and bitterness. Overall this seems as if a slight infection has taken hold over time, but no way to know how old it is without a date on it.

Thanks to Julie & Ryan for this one!
