500ml bottle, best by 4 February 2012, into a Duvel tulip. Collaboration between The Kernel Brewery and Redemption Brewing, purchased at the former.

A: Clear, dark reddish-brown (nigh black) body under an inch of soft beige foam. Ok retention, light lace. Looks enticing, especially for the style.

S: Holy schnikes, they call this a mild??!! This smells like a kick-ass stout. 6.1%!!?? This smells like a kick-ass IMPERIAL stout. Huge chocolate, coffee, and caramel. There's a delicate, old-smelling earthiness that underlies the straight-up roasted maltiness. Enormously complex, delicate and yet powerful, this is a terrific-smelling beer regardless of what style it's called. Wow.

T: Chocolate, caramel, citrus, dark fruits, and earthiness. The malts provide deliciousness up front, the hops give complexity, depth, and balance on the finish. This seriously tastes old, and in the best way possible. I love it.

M: A little on the thin side, with very fine carbonation. This fits the style, I suppose, but not really the rest of the beer. Since I've been giving this beer high marks for being so radically NOT to style, it would be wrong to switch horses in mid stream.

O: How the hell did this collaborative beer come to be? Who decided to brew a "strong mild" (am I wrong in thinking that is as paradoxical as "black IPA"?), and how on earth did they make it taste so amazingly aged? The freshness of the hoppy finish is the only thing that would keep me from thinking that this beer had spent at least a few years in a cellar. I wish I had gotten more bottles.
