Oak amber ale. Fermented and maturated only in oak vats. The name "Madamin" is a piedmontese word meaning "young lady". Available in 375 ml or 750 ml bottles.

On tap at HaandBryggeriet Beer Festival, Drammen. Brownish red (more than reddish brown) colour, moderate off-white head. Fruity, oaky and vinous aroma, slightly acidic. (According to the brewer, no grapes nor any other fruit has been added to the beer, but it has fermented and matured in oak barrels previously used for their grape-infused beers), The flavour is oaky, fruity and slightly acidic / vinegary, but lacks a hoppy counterpoint, and there is not much malty sweetness either.

I have become shy of Italian ales for several years now, particularly those offering Belgian styles. (Usually, the price-quality ratio is better from the Belgian real deal or North American specialists.) But I'm glad, very much, that I bought Madamin.

I get it home and notice the label that says "bottled 2014." Not a fan of Ouds, my experience says that more than three years is on the downside to sour. Thankfully, Madamin was not sour, just pleasantly tart. (Although I can believe it tastes better when fresher.)

I'm Looking at an Oud not much above average. But the Smells' collectivity is an integrated tart that seems balanced. While Taste has deteriorated, I can still tell that it was also balanced in its prime. In the mouth, the same.

But I give LoverBeer huge points for their passion. A home brewer who gets encouragement from Belgian experts and business acumen and work from his wife and they absolutely love what they do. Their range of tart ales are innovative, yet not extreme (by U.S. standards.) Their labels are works of art and their copy is thoughtful. In metropolitan Torino, it would surprise me if there are not enough Oud-philes to support LoverBeer. (I'm also willing to bet they have a patient importer.)

All said, if you find Madamin (which is a Piedmont expression for a young married woman), enjoy it for the moment. Carpe diem.

Beer pairing with Tasting Menu

5/6

Copper color, pinkish head. Very mellow. Bottle was a 2014 vintage. Oak aging is evident. Very tasty.

Paired with Grass Fed Beef.

Pours ugly dark brown.

Sour cherry, lemon, tart.

Low sourness, light earth, vanilla, sour lemon, sticky lime finish.

Light mouthfeel, ABV tastes around 7.5%

Not bad.

Hazy amber color with beige head. Aroma has balsamic vinegar and caramelized malt. Taste is tart and fruity with some grape vinegar and a woody bitterness on the finish. Light to medium body, medium carbonation. Balanced and quite refreshing for the style.

On-tap 2/7/2016 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a deep reddish brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains tart dark fruit, wild Belgian yeast and some malts.

T: The taste starts out with a mild sour burst from flavors of cherries and other dark fruits. Then a thin malt character follows. The hops presence is very mild as expected with this type of beer and there’s a good balance. The after-taste is slightly tart.

M: Crisp and smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean and dry.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Beer is good, but not as the rating average would have it. Aroma is about the best aspect, with a fragrant blend of fruit, vinegar, oak, malt, hint of funk. Flavor's like nose - tartness is only mildly accentuated by a light carbonation; everything else tapers nicely. Body is good. Appearance ok. I could see a very sharp cheddar or a smoked aged gouda with this. Nice brew.

Draft pour to snifter. Deep red color without head or lacing. Smells sour. Thinking it has a bit of acetic acid along with lactic. Sour and woody with a slightly bitter finish. Thin feel and light carbonation.
