Very good selection of beer at the back in coolers and along several shelves... Very large tap selection of around 30 or so beers... No one said a word to me or even really looked my way when I was there... I actually felt like I was in the way as they were moving items around in the store... I'm not a huge proponent of such a large tap selection as I know there's no way that many selections move fast enough for it to all be fresh and I never take chances unless it's something pretty hard to find which none of these were... Pretty standard selection for the area... I was able to grab some Death by Coconut and a few other locals and actually spent more on some rare whiskies I spotted... Not the best location as it's in a sort of spotty part of town... I actually prefer the stores in Cordova or Germantown to the ones in Memphis...

Made a one day quick trip from Louisiana to Memphis for work. Looked up stores on BA the night before and decided to stop by Joe's in lieu of Buster's. I can't speak to the quality of Buster's, but I definitely enjoyed my trip to Joe's Liquor. I would recommend it to anyone traveling in or around Memphis.

I had a small list of beers to search for, some of which I expected to be unavailable. I was surprised that only Astronaut Status from Wiseacre Brewing was scarce. I found quite a few good beers. Although the selection is a bit limited, there are some quality beers there. I would say they choose quality over quantity, which is fine by me! The format was odd to me, though. Most of the beers were priced individually for the make your own four/six pack, and that threw off the pricing a bit for me. Small caveat on my part maybe. Joe's has a tap selection of about 35 beers with all the names, types, abv, etc for each beer listed on flat screen televisions. Super easy to find beers I wanted. Tried a couple, then Kelly filled me some crowlers on site. They also fill growlers. That's a first for any liquor/beer store for me.

I read some reviews that said the staff isn't knowledgeable, with the exception of a fella named Kelly. Since Kelly was the first person to assist me, I had no trouble finding what I wanted and he helped me make my own six pack with recommendations from their selection. Upon looking up those beers up on BA, he made some great choices--the lowest rated beer he suggested was 3.85.

On the outside, the store looked like a Thrifty Liquor in the bad part of town. Rest assured, the inside was completely in order. I walked in and there were 4 or 5 employees dusting every bottle on the shelves for the length of my visit. The floor layout was easily navigable. Per the reviews I read before my trip, the craft beer is located in the back of the store. There were 4 large racks of craft beer, plus other racks of mainstream beer, and there were about 6 coolers of craft beer.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the customer service, knowledge, and selection at Joe's. If I return for work, I'll definitely be back.

I visited Feb. 3, 2015

I'm just going to do a side by side on Buster's and Joe's.

V - Buster's wins hands down. The area it's in seems hopping and more vibrant. From an outsider, Joe's seemed in more of seedier or rougher part of town.

Q - I'd give the nod to Buster's again. The beer was stacked up on the floor or deep on the shelf. The beer at Joe's had empty pockets where it looks like someone just didn't do inventory. Also, at Joe's I saw more than a few beat up or dented in craft cans that should have been pulled and not left in the fridge.

S - Both were pretty much equal here. But, I'd give the nod again to Buster's as they helped me bring the beer to my car. I bought more than a case at both stores.

S - TN has weird beer laws that splits the abv between liquor stores and grocery stores. Selection is what it is in both stores as it West TN seems to be forgotten when compared to East TN. I went to both stores on the same day and Buster's was definitely cheaper by a dollar when comparing the same beers of the same format.

Cool sign, bro!

Happened upon Joe’s by chance, we were heading back to the hotel.

Good selection of craft beer (considering the laws), maybe a bit more spread out than Busters (a good thing), maybe a bit more cold (a good thing). But Joe’s seemed higher priced than Busters (NOT a good thing).

The cashier was kind of pushy and impatient as we were looking at some non-beer items (hey, we are out-of-towners and we wanted to see what you had, ya’ll).

Overall, drive by Joe’s see the sign and just visit Buster’s for your high abv beers.

Been in here many times , never really reviewed it before so here it goes

Stopped in again to after a day at the zoo with the family , just a one mile jot over to these guys. This is a really great liquor store set up nice , easy to browse , with plenty of employees always willing to help you out.

Like I said its a liquor store and being that in Tennessee they can only sell beer over 6% for some reason. The beer is in the back of the store and arranged by style. Lots of Belgium beers and tons of American craft beers to choose from. The beer is always fresh and they always have in stock what I come to buy. They had the Stone Verticals from 11 and 12 on hand and I picked up the Barley wine from Stone and Brooklyn while in there.

Overall this is a great little shop in a city that should have a great beer scene but really doesnt. These guys do the best with what they can get. The store is nice , I always feel safe in the area its in , my only complaint is some of their beers are marked up a little bit higher than what I can get them for in Missouri and Arkansas , not bad enough I dont pay it , but its always fresh and that counts.

I think it's worth a visit just to see that sign. Totally unique and cool. Unfortunately, we've got some idiotic liquor laws in Tennessee, so that hampers the selection here. It's only beer above 6.2% at liquor stores, so keep that in mind. That basically strikes out all of Yazoo's regular lineup beers. But for what it is, you will find plenty of nice things to get. And if you want selection from far and away, you will find nice stuff here. I personally was aiming for local/regional stuff, so ended up with some Red Brick amongst others. Service was very good. To the degree that it should be. The guys here are chill and are eager to help.

A- Friendly laid back atmosphere, and I know this is a weird thing to critique, but this place has a really pleasant smell inside. The front third and most of the middle is wine. Sides are liquor. Back right is beer.
Quality and Selection- Like Buster's the selection is limited by Tennessee's goofy liquor laws. So all they sell is high gravity beers. Good selection of those, though. Abita, Stone, what's left of DFH in the state, a variety of Belgians, Laughing Dog, Victory, and a couple others. So good quality beers, but limited due to law.
S- Very friendly and willing to help out/offer suggestions. Also, while the prices may be a bit more than Buster's if you join Joe's Beer Club, you get a discount and that makes the prices about even. Roughly even on everything, but Joe's has offered me better service, making it the premier High-gravity beer place in town for me.

I really like Joe's. I try to stop by about every other week just to see what's new. Although the store is mainly wine and liquor (about 1/10 of the store is beer), they have a good selection including DFH, RJ Rockers, Rogue and Kasteel. It's a good selection for Memphis. I also really like their staff- A big thank you to the guy who recommended Sneaky Pete IPA to me. I've also never bought a beer from Joe's that was skunked, past dated or obviously mishandled. I never mind paying for quality and though the prices might be higher than elsewhere, expect their product to be of quality.

Was in Memphis last weekend and stopped by Joe's. They have a good selection including Victory, Stone, Yazoo, Innis & Gunn,Unibroue, Brewery Ommegang, Westmalle, Maredsous, Augustijn, Abita, Dogfish Head, RJ Rocker, Delirium, rogue, Kasteel and more. I found their prices higher than Busters over all. For example Unibroue and Ommegang singles were $2.99 at Busters and $3.25 at Joe's. I found some thing at both places that I didn't see at the other so it's worth going to both, but shop Buster's first. The location was just O.K. The staff here was better than that at Buster's however, very friendly and helpful.

Joe's is still my Go-To-Stop for beer because of their beer club discount but Natalie's is coming on strong.

Joe's has a very good high gravity selection of beer for the Memphis area. I'm going from memory here but they have about 12 shelves of beer at room temp and 2-3 three doors of singles in the cooler. Their prices are much better than Busters. The staff is nice and helpful. The store is clean, easy to get to and plenty of parking. Anyone in or passing through the Memphis area that's into craft/import beer should check it out. They even have a beer club. Plus the sign is cool, especially at night. Thanks bstaffor for the tip about this place.

so happy to get this place on beer advocate so hopefully it can get the attention it deserves! joe's is conveniently located in midtown right off of poplar. the store has been recently renovated and is super modern and clean inside. fortunately for area BA's Joe's management has taken an interest in craft beer and has expanded their selection with the remodel. Currently the store dedicates an entire aisle to craft brew as well as 4 wall fridges. Selection is second to none in memphis and the prices are fantastic. Service puts this location over the top as the majority of their staff is aquainted with craft beer and i've received excellent selection advice from them in the past. Without a doubt the best craft beer stop in memphis and the best service of any liquor store i've EVER visited
