February 7th, 2015 - Hess's truly dark brews are few and far between. They seem more inclined to ambers and hoppy brews and such, but the Umbrix has been a staple personage at the tasting room for some time. With a dark, broody body and a botanical scent, it suggests something more like a coffee stout. I also detect some raw pumpkin (off note?) and some cumin, too, which helps to disguise that squashy, pumpkin guts scent. The flavor is more dry (could be the rye agent) with a nice creamy palate to enjoy. In many respects it tastes similar to a black IPA, with an assertive hop business in the background. The alcohol is also appropriately assertive, and while the overall take is that the flavor seems a little chaotic, it is also tasty and enjoyable.

Picked up a bottle from the Craft Beer Hop Stop in late December for $6.99. Bottled on 11-30-14.

Beer poured black with a nice tan head that has some great hang time.

Nose is roasted malts .

Taste is well balanced between the spicy rye malts and a generous amount of hops.

Mouthfeel is full and very satisfying.

Overall this was a very good beer, on par with a lot of the west coast brewers. Definitely try it if you come across it!

Look is good and smell is great. Taste is also very good. Great coffee forward taste with rich chocolate background. I also love the creamy texture. At 10%, the alcohol is very well hidden.

Very dark brown with a one finger tan head.
Coffee peat on the nose.
Taste follows with some nutty toffee. The rye addition gives it a nice hint of spice.
Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Smooth and delicious semisweet finish.

On tap at Pie Dog in Fullerton.

Burnished liquid leather pour capped by a tightly packed wet milky tan head that quickly dissipates leaving a thin ring around the edge.
Nose brings a coffee roast meets peat and lite "I'm not sure hint of sweetness."
Taste is more of the same roast and peat with some nuttiness that heads toward a slight pecan and ever so light caramel.
Finish stays slightly sweet with coffee roast and peat brewing followed by a slightly slick nuttiness that then hints at vanilla. Mouthfeel is slightly chewy.
Quite good. Alcohol is subdued, no discernible heat. Smooth.

Dark with a great head. Very rye forward with malty, chocolatey notes. Very good beer!
