August 4th, 2015 - I don't see this beer around much, but it's one of my favorites from Hess. It looks like a Scotch Ale, with a blushing brown color and a deep, boiling stew looking carbonation. The aroma has a nice, heavy shaggy malt note, and a touch of scotch ale sweetness. The palate is light and foamy, and starts up front with some leather notes. The palate buzzes with carbonation, and has a nice long aftertaste with an alcohol burn. Tobacco appears in that aftertaste too, which always appeals to my sense of flavor.

Clear reddish brown with plenty of foam and lacing in the Maredsous goblet. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at at Bine & Vine for $7.49. Thickish mouthfeel and plenty of malt. A little fruit in the aroma, tea and sweet vermouth.
This has the classic "American Strong Ale" taste, whatever this style actually is. Sort of an Old ale with some dank hops and a fruity touch of oxidation. Malty and a little sweet, but the roasted flavors seem to favor the woodsy side. Quite bitter aftertaste with that dark burnt raisin edge.

Mike Hess fifth anniversary beer poured from a bomber purchased for six bucks at Costco in San Diego. Pours an attractive dark brown with a small, fairly dense head. Well balanced and pleasing all around. American Strong Ale seems to be a broad and diverse category, and this beer is distinct from any I've had. Not a mind-blowing brew, but solid all around. I'll pick up another if I get a chance before it's gone.
