Serious coffee flavor in a big black beer. On tap at Local Habit in San Diego, and seems to be back as a St. Patrick's spring seasonal. "Fors Hiberniae" means something like "Irish thing" in the Latin favored by the Hess folks.

Gigantic flavor, like a Russian Imperial with a jolt of java. Dark, near black in the tulip, and about as opaque as beers get. Flat in the mouth. Sweet and spicy, even a little hot. Rich and full of roasted malt and dark caramel.

Mostly, though, it tastes like espresso. If you like coffee stouts, it's a must-try. About the best actual coffee flavor I've had in a beer.

03-19-2013 update: Here it is St. Patrick's Day again, and this is called "Oatmeal Stout" at Local Habit. On the nitro tap, it's cold and creamy, sweet and mellow. I don't really taste the coffee, but it's more of a Milk Stout as the malty sugar saturates the tongue. An excellent quaff.

3rd stop of a San Diego beer trip with my wife. Though this was actually the 2nd time I've been to Hess.

Was glad I was able to try this one, as it was limited, since they made it for Saint Patrick's Day.

The beer pours a near black, with dark brown hue on the edges. A choclate mocha colored head rose about an inch or two, then settled down to about an inch of head.

The beer smells of fresh made espresso with milk, semi-sweet roasted malt, and choclate. A little heat on the nose.

Dark choclate, cream, roasted oats. Great flavor, nice balance. The alcohol was very well hidden, but comes through more on the aroma.

Mouthfeel was creamy, with light to medium carbonation.

Overall, a tasty oatmeal stout, I got a "prowler" (half growler) of this to take home.
