Notes / Commercial Description:
El Dorado is a dual-purpose American hop varietal. El Dorado is a high alpha acid hop, which provides plenty of bitterness while its flavor and aroma profile consists of tropical fruit characteristics. Pear, watermelon candy, and stone fruit have also been noted. HBC Lead Brewer Greg Filippi has this to say about El Dorado.

"We Hermits have been trying to get our hands on El Dorado Hops since they were released several years ago, which until now have been in short supply. Last summer during harvest, I was lucky enough to visit the farm in Yakima where the El Dorado strain is cultivated. El Dorado gets its name from the fabled City of Gold, because the flowers contain so many essential oils and resins that handling them for even a short time quickly turns your hands a pale yellow color. The hops have a strong tropical fruit aroma like pineapple and mango, with a noticeable underpinning of resinous pine."

This must be a bad batch dumped on the market. Why would it have only have a total of two reviews? And from from people in the middle of "flyover country" to boot?

Here goes:

Deep gold-amber color and excellent rocky head with ample lacing. Smells earthy and dusty. Picking up pears, citrus, pineapple and after-dinner mints in the aroma. Taste is dusty, oxidized and muted malt and seemingly aged-out hops. Could this be old beer? Gasoline finish. Mouthfeel is not bad. Overall a thumbs down.

This was the newest beer this week at Timberlane in (wait for it...) El Dorado, Arkansas. I tried this same beer several months ago and had a similar experience.

Update: looked he bottle over thoroughly. Fond a stamp just below the label: Batch 669, 041113
It may be April 2013. A little old.

Pours an effervescent amber/copper with 3+ fingers of sand colored head. Very good head retention & above average lacing

S: Maltyness, leafy hops & grapefruit

T: Leafy & piney hops, along with pears & breadyness up gtont. Woody & earthy hops as this warms, a touch malt sweetness lurks in the background, along with pears & white grape. Finishes with dryness, grapefruit, leafy hops & pears

MF: Medium bodied, crisp carbonation, pretty good balance

Good AIPA, but not in love with this hop profile, would do in a pinch. I like trying these hop varietals (sic) to see what each brings to the table, not all are gold though...
