Notes / Commercial Description:
Already in the 1600s the Berliner Weisse Style Beer was mentioned in documents by the French reformers "Huguenots" as they crossed Berlin on their way to Flanders. In 1809, the Emperor Napoleon and his troops celebrated their Prussian victory with it.

This Berliner Weisse Style Beer is brewed with traditional mash hoping [sic] and without wort boiling. This along with a traditional strain of lactic acid bacteria provide a fruity and dry but palateful character. A character that Napoleon and his troops characterized as "lively" and "elegant".

Retrieved bottle from cellar after a year. Let's see how it's coming along.

A: Pours a slightly hazy pale yellow with an initial 1/2" white head which fades to the rim. Very effervescent tiny bubbles.

N: Lemons, astringent, musty funk, grass, grainy, fruity yeast.

T: Follows nose. Tart and zesty.

M: Crisp, tangy, tingly on the nose and tongue from the fine carbonation. Dry finish.

O: Very refreshing. Quite enjoyable. A little age seems to bring more tartness. Would certainly have again.

Extraordinarily clear liquid, at least until I poured the second half of the bottle. Now, there's LOTS of clumped yeast in the beer. Straw colored. Lots of carbonation coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good starting head but it completely fizzes out to no bubbles and correspondingly no lace.

Mildly wheaty and quite sour to the nose. Some yeast.

Initial sip is mild but soon grows in lemony tartness. The beer is less carbonated than the appearance would lead one to believe.Crisp and clean, there is virtually no aftertaste except a lingering creaminess that reminds me of skim milk.

This tastes better once the yeast from the base of the bottle is added to the glass.

Pours an effervescent honey with 1+ finger of eggshell white head. Clouds up as the bottle drains, above average head retention & just a bit of lacing

S: Sour wheat, lemons, grapes & damp cereal

T: Lemons, grassyness, tart, tart wheat up front. Some apple like crispness & much more tartness along with lemons as this warms. Finishes crisp & tart & dry

MF: Spritzy, dry, tart with light/medium body.

Great summer time session beer, would tire after 3 or 4, but man this cuts the dust! I can't find much fault with this style-wise or flavor-wise

Appearance: Pours a hazy yellow body with a thick white head.

Smell: Aroma of sour wheat and tart lemon with a noticeable DMS character that smells distinctly of pot stewed veggies.

Taste: Faint, soft wheat flavors with a splash of lemon juice and merely a hint of sweetness. The DMS is much, much lighter - like adding an asparagus swizzle stick. Suspiciously refreshing finish that's both lightly sour and salty.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Soft carbonation.

Drinkability: Not so bad, really. In fact, it's so tasty, I just HAD to tell the world!

A: Pours an extremely light, straw color with a large white, foamy head on top with great retention and tons of lacing.

S: Slightly musty with a faint tartness as well. A good bit of pale and bready malt.

T: Very light tart lemons mixed with a little bready malt. Slight tartness, very nice.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: A very nice Berliner, incredibly easy drinking.

Sun-faded lemon with edges that are nearly colorless. The bright white crown is large to start and slowly crackles and sizzles its way into the atmosphere, leaving several sudsy strands of lace. Since the appearance follows the style guidelines, it's hard to be too critical. Besides, this is the richest looking version that I've seen to date.

The nose is more white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) than beer. It's white grape fruity with a light muskiness and a considerable lactic tang. The one word that keeps coming to mind is 'elegant'. I have no doubt that my taste buds are gonna be happy in a few seconds.

It's difficult to compare different beers of the same style over time... especially beer of a style that I've had only three times previously. With that caveat in mind, 1809 is the most delicious, most complete and most well-balanced Berliner weissbier yet.

Part of the reason for the enthusiasm is that I can actually taste the grains (50% wheat and 50% barley), something that makes this offering taste more beer-like and something that I don't recall with the others. The dominant flavor, however, is the tangy fruitiness imparted by lactobacilli.

Specifics include lemon peel, tart white grapes, and the aforementioned untoasted grains (which are subtle). The beer has plenty of the dry, snappy, puckery character that is the defining characteristic of the style. The finish is amazingly dessicating. It paradoxically quenches one's thirst and then adds to it.

While the mouthfeel is light, it isn't thin or watery. There's some substance there. The bubbles need to be close to perfect for a good score to be granted... and they are. Sparkly carbonation adds energy and helps to scrub the tongue clean after each mouthful.

Simply put, Brauerei Weihenstephan 1809 is the best Berliner Weissbier that I've had so far. I can't see myself drinking beer of this unique style very often, but it's nice to know there's a damn good one out there. If you're curious about the style, start here.

From 10/25/15 notes. 500ml bottle poured into my Lost Abbey stemware.

Pours a hazy golden yellow color with two fingers of off white head and high carbonation evident. Spices, yeast, sour citrus and sour fruits, oak, wheat, and bready malts. Medium body and high carbonation.

Overall a decent Berliner but carbonation is too high. Nose is nice and a bit funky, taste was a little less flavorful.

I cant believe I had never actually tried this one! Insane. I got it as an extra a couple weeks ago and went right to it. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 07/04/2009.

The pour was excellent. A very bright yellow color with a large amount of cloudiness to it. Nice big head of white rises up to the top quite quickly and settles down over the glass with tons of side glass lacing. Lots of banana and clove notes in the aroma right away. That really nice light aroma I look for. As I take the first sip it is remarkably clean and crisp. Soothing, the perfect BBQ beer so far. Nice and crisp wheat and bready flavors, light grain and nice touches of fruit accent it wonderfully. No problem at all with putting the one down any day.

Overall very, very good. I could drink this one all night. I would have to highly recommnend seeking this out.

500 mL poured into a large snifter.

Appearance - Very hazy orange body that starts with a head and in a blink it's gone. No lacing. Nothing. Just some active bubbling. Looks kinda like Fanta.

Smell - Citrusy aromas of lemon and orange with a base of wheat and grains. A light tartness to the scent.

Taste - The tartness is not intense, but it's the dominant flavor. I can see why syrup is added to it. It would add a layer of complexity and perhaps take the edge off of the tartness. The tartness is a citric acid sort of flavor. Very good flavor for a hot afternoon.

Mouthfeel - Good carbonation, despite the lack of a head. Dry finish that makes it feel lighter. If it weren't for the tartness, it would be going down very easily.

Overall - A style I wouldn't drink year-round. But it's nice when I'm hot and thirsty. An intriguing twist on what malt and yeast can become.

According to the brown bottle I poured from this is brewed by Dr. Briem.
Poured cold into a traditional wheat glass and added sediment halfway through.

A - A light golden with slight haze. Yeast particulate dropped out immediately. The head is thin and white with compact bubbles. The bubbles continually stream vertically.

S - Nuts, spice, slight sour apple and citrus smell.

M - A nutty, highly effervescent with generally mild sour and spiced attributes.

T - Flavors of wheat and spice are dominant and a fruit flavor emerges next w/ subtle flavors of lemon and pineapple. A light vegetable (celery?) flavor comes in later.

Green apple and tea are some minor flavors that arrive in the finish.

D - A very tasty ale and the light sourness gives you just enough to continue wanting to drink the beer. The wheat and carbonation are refreshing and when the yeast is added even more grainy, nutty spice flavors show up. A bready quality is apparent and very enjoyable. Quite drinkable summer beer and big flavor for a 5% ale.

I've been wanting to try this one for quite some time, so when I saw one today at the store, I had to pick it up.

A: The beer is a golden color with a huge fluffy white head and a ton of tiny carbonation bubbles.

S: The smell is very fruity. The characteristic wheat and lactic tartness doesn't seem to be quite as pungent. Instead there is a strong smell of sweet apples.

T: The taste has a light weight flavor and a very light tartness. There is still the sweet, apple fruitiness that I picked up in the nose. I'm not really sure where it's coming from.

M: The mouthfeel is nearly perfect for the style. Light, highly carbonated, and dry on the finish.

D: This, like other Berliner Weisses, is incredibly drinkable. My only gripe is that it's not quite as tart and lactic as the other Berliner Weisses that I've had.

A: The beer appears crystal clear and yellow in color. The head vanishes within seconds, leaving no lace. This is a top-notch appearance for a Berliner Weissbier, and much different than the draft version, in my experience.

S: The aroma is of funky yeast and bananas. The aroma has some Belgian lambic type scents, which I find very appealing.

T: The beer is funky and sour, but not to the point of puckering, at least for me. Banana flavors play a prominent role, but not to the same extent as in a hefeweizen. 1809 is tart, funky, refreshing, and low in alcohol. This is a thoroughly enjoyable beverage, and again, I enjoyed this much more from the bottle versus the draft.

M: Tart and slightly acetic with a solid carbonation level. Nice feel.

D: A great beer. I wish it was a little cheaper ($6 / bottle) and available in six packs. I really enjoy this beer and would drink it anytime.
