1809 | Professor Fritz Briem

Brewed by:
Professor Fritz Briem
Germany
Style: Berliner Weissbier
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%
Availability: Year-round
Notes / Commercial Description:
Already in the 1600s the Berliner Weisse Style Beer was mentioned in documents by the French reformers "Huguenots" as they crossed Berlin on their way to Flanders. In 1809, the Emperor Napoleon and his troops celebrated their Prussian victory with it.
This Berliner Weisse Style Beer is brewed with traditional mash hoping [sic] and without wort boiling. This along with a traditional strain of lactic acid bacteria provide a fruity and dry but palateful character. A character that Napoleon and his troops characterized as "lively" and "elegant".
Historic Signature Series:
Forgotten styles brewed according to their historic recipes by Dr. Fritz Briem, of the Doemens Institute.

Pours an almost clear pale straw producing 3+ fingers of very finely bubbled, slow to dissipate, snow white head that leaves no lacing. Aroma light malty cracker & biscuit, sharp & lactic in a background of lemon/lime & grass. Taste is lactobacillus sour, lemon-lime & pepper backed by thin grainy & cracker malts. Finishes tart & lively with a prickly carbonation bite, a faint mineral note & a hint of something akin to a freshly extinguished candle. Aftertaste is dry & tart. Mouthfeel is light bodied with intense carbonation, fruity, dry & lively in the mouth with peppery carbonation bite that ligers on the sides & back of the tongue.

Decanted from a 16.9 oz (500 ml) bottle into a conical pint glass; produced on 16 June 2016.
A: Pours a cloudy straw to yellow color with exuberant, foamy head formation (with oddly large bubbles initially), excellent retention, but very little lacing. Yeast remnants evident late in pour.
S: Tart with aromas of green apple, green pear, unripened pitted fruit, perhaps white grapes. Lactic acid is distinguishable and present.
T: Dry and flavors and tartness largely following the olfactory palette, although with more vinous quality, like a sparkling white made from under ripened grapes. Slightly sweet aftertaste.
M: Medium to full bodied with modest carbonation despite robust head formation. Really leaves a tart and tingling sensation in the mouth.
O: Having tried quite a few Berliner Weiss style beers, both flavored and unadulterated, I would say this is the benchmark, thus far. Enjoyed it

Look: Super clear completely see through
Smell: lemon, grassy, earthy, white grape.
Taste: right upfront I'm getting that white grape transitions in the mid palate to tart lemon earthy grassy notes in the finish I get a touch of orange peel and tart white grape lingers in the finish.
Feel: light body high carbonation crisp dry finish.
Overall: I like what's going on in this beer just enough tartness to complement the rest of the flavors. It's a really good beer.
