Pours straw colored, cloudy as the bottle gets towards the bottom. Nothing really as far as head or lacing goes.

Smells like tart, lemony funk.

Taste is light, tart through and through. Dry lemon flavors, some barnyard-style funk and not too much else.

A bit fizzy and very light.

This one is as easy to drink as seltzer water. Nothing bad here at all, and while I've never had a Berliner Weissbier before, I'd like my sour beers with a bit more going on than this.

Appearance: beautiful light golden body,carbonation bubbles flowing through this beer with a huge white fluffy heady.

Smell: Barnyard funk, lemons, light toffee tone with some bready malts and yeast.

Taste: slightly sweet, bready malts at first than leads to tart lemons and barnyard funk..very impressive beer

Mouthfeel: very sharp because of the carbonation but very light on the palate.

Drinkability:off the charts! This is going to be my goto beer for the summer.

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a rocks glass.

A huge crystal-ball like bubble works it's way out of the bottle - I see my reflection swimming in rainbows. A loud active ghost white head recedes to a hornet's nest of rushing carbonation sustaining a pearling collar of foam. A lightly hazy citrine body is slowly revealed.

Bright tart wheat-y lactic notes lead the aroma, though they give way to a lush fragrance of asian pear, orange blossoms, and rosewater. Very fresh and invigorating.

Gentle malt on the palate with a tart bread note balancing out the winter fruit sweetness. The finish is full of apples with a lingering mineral quality weakly suggestive of proseco. Faint "wild" notes round things out. While not cloying, it is sweet enough on it's own that I wouldn't think of adding syrup to this.

Zesty, furiously carbonated (though not effervescent), and very light-bodied.

Great for a hot day, this is such a pure version of the style - though some might prefer a tiny bit more tartness, this is very pleasing.

A- A very pale light yellow that is quite hazy. Billowing slightly rocky head made out of large bubbles emerges at first only to disappear almost completely leaving behind only a thin patchy lair with no lacing.

S- Quick malt that changes to a lemony sweetness. The sweet character of the beer is complimented by a noticeably tart smell. Some bready and yeast character begins to emerge towards the middle while slight barnyard funk creeps in towards the end but fades into the tart and sweet smells.

T- Sweet taste to begin with citrus fruits developing, lemon dominating the category. Sour character begins to pick up in the middle complimented by the bready yeast flavor. Tartness spikes at the end of the middle and is subdued as it continues into the aftertaste.

M- Light in body as expected with a moderate amount of prickly carbonation. The end finishes very dry as the beer is fully attenuated.

D- Mmmmm love me some sours. The sweetness can take away a little from this category, but it isn't overwhelming. This would be great on a hot summer day (not surprising). Now if only my homebrewed berliner would finish fermenting sooner....

Extraordinarily clear liquid, at least until I poured the second half of the bottle. Now, there's LOTS of clumped yeast in the beer. Straw colored. Lots of carbonation coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good starting head but it completely fizzes out to no bubbles and correspondingly no lace.

Mildly wheaty and quite sour to the nose. Some yeast.

Initial sip is mild but soon grows in lemony tartness. The beer is less carbonated than the appearance would lead one to believe.Crisp and clean, there is virtually no aftertaste except a lingering creaminess that reminds me of skim milk.

This tastes better once the yeast from the base of the bottle is added to the glass.

D: classic for the style, my current go to berleiner weisse only because it's the easiest one of this style for me to obtain

Poured into a Wormtown weizen glass.

A- Slightly cloudy yellow body (Very cloudy after the yeast is poured in), great big 4-finger rocky white head that shows great retention.

S- Very tart, sour, funky, musty, astringent, with a lemony spiciness. A little sour aplle aroma. Sweet white grape aroma.

T- Very nice and tart. Sour apple, funkiness, a little soury-citrus with a sweet white grape flavor again. A lemon grass flavor is there, too, but in the finish with some more tartness, that's where the acidic flavors come through as well.

MF- Light to moderate body. Very dry finish. Also a chalkiness to the finish as well.

D- Very drinkable. I love the flavor of a good Berliner Weisse or any other tart beer so it scores high with me there. The 5% abv also helps, as it becomes pretty sessionable (Not a SESSION ALE, DING, but sessionABLE). Also, the tartness doesn't wreck you palate like some other wilds/sours I like, so you could enjoy a couple of these no problem.

500mL bottle poured into a Rastel Hefeweizen glass. No date on bottle.

Appearance: Huge head upon pouring. I really had to let this one settle down a lot until I get the whole bottle into the glass. Very slow pour but some yeast did get in towards the end. The beer initially poured a clear straw yellow which later turned yellow with some tan-brown due to the yeast. Indeed, once the yeast got in there it became a hazy translucent beer. The foam was a huge white crackling / big-bubble head initially but this finally died away after pouring everything in. Lots and lots of bubbles coming up through the beer the whole time.

Smell: When the yeast was on top of the foam - it was very much like a classic Hefeweizen but with more grain and yeast smell, but once this sank to the bottom, the smell changed completely. The smell was now floral, lemony, a little bit astringent, and mildly musty/yeasty. Very interesting.

Taste: Now this is a very unusual beer. Crisp tart apple and lemon with a hint of wheat grain at the end. Dry finish. In a way....very much like a sparkling water in the mouthfeel and taste combo. The lemon flavors become more pronounced as it warms up.

Mouthfeel: Carbonated in a very good way - not fizzy, but cleansing of the palate and like a good sparkling water, but with more heft to the liquid. Very interesting mouthfeel to this beer.

Drinkability: Hmmmm....such an unusual beer I'm not sure what to make of it in the end. Refreshing, but I wonder if I would enjoy the styles of this beer fresh with the fruit syrups put in like they do in Berlin. I say this because I have a sweet tooth and after awhile the sourness of this beer gets to me. So while I could not have another, I say this because I don't have something to pair it with. With the right food I could probably have another. But by itself, no, one is enough. Still, I greatly enjoyed it and I'll have to figure out another occasion to try another one of these.

(16.9oz bottle). Gusher. Pours cloudy lemon yellow color with massive white head. Active carbonation. Aroma of funk, basement, citrus and lavender; it's perfumey. Taste is tart with some malt sweetness underneath. Medium bodied with a smooth finish. This is a gentle beer. I definitely should get more to age. Nice.

as its pouring it almost has a pinkish hue which settles to a pale straw color with a pure white, quickly receding head that leaves little lacing. a nice, steady stream of bubbles continuously flows.

wheaty and fruity with lemon, grass, straw, hay, peach, apple skins.

tart and fruity. not sour, but tart. lemon, peach, and sour apple with wheat and grass. pretty simple, yet complex, oddly. has the grassiness of a pilsner with a nice tartness and light fruitiness that complements that beautifully.

pretty thin bodied, which is perfect for the style, with pretty heavy carbonation. it finishes dry as hell (assuming hell is dry).

drinks very well! by far the best example of the style, though I can count the ones I've tried on one hand still. dry, yet sweet, yet tart, yet herbal, yet simple, yet complex.

22oz. bottle poured into a stemmed glass.

(A)- Pours a clear pale straw yellow color. Produced a nice pure white bubbly effervescent head that stuck around for awhile before dissipating.

(S)- A nice dry hay/straw earthiness with a light yet crisp white grape and lemon tartness.

(T)- Very similar to the smell in every way. Nice light fruit tartness.

(M)- A larger carbonation level than expected, but it is welcomed and fitting. Fruity and very crisp. Just a tiny hint at sourness on the backend.

(D)- A great Berliner Weisse. Nice crisp and tart fruits with a bubbly carbonation level. Great stuff that would be fantastic on a hot summers day. I look forward to exploring this style further.

Pours a faint yellow color, hazy, with a nice white head.

Aromas are of lemon, sour apples, apple sauce, and hints of white wine. Nice nose.

Taste starts out with pineapple sweetness, light vinegar, and white wine. Finish is really crisp, mineral like, with lemon zest, and a hint of sour funk.

Mouthfeel is nice, really full, smooth, yet crisp.

Drinkability is great. This is my first take on the style, and I like it. Reminds me of sour light, but still with plenty of flavor.

Reviewed from notes. Poured into a tulip. Pours a very light straw color with lots of visible carbonation and a gorgeous three finger fluffy and creamy looking white head that settles down to about half and retains nicely through out the beverage. The aroma is kind of funky and yeasty with a slight lemon edge to it. The taste is very light. It's nice and crisp with a biscuity flavor with an tart lemon apple finish to it. I think the carbonation is a but much on this. It kind of explodes in the mouth and the carbonation is a bit on the sharp side. I do however really like the nice light body. This is near perfect. By biggest qualm with this is the carbonation, otherwise, this is a great example of the style.

Medium sized German bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours clear golden yellow, quite transparent. Fizzy fast acting white foam that completely burns off.

Strong banana smell, some wheat-ish.

Tart citrus lemon taste. Punchy. Very good. Little hint of sour. Superstrong carbonation.

Clean, tart, tasty, great beer. Well done, Professor.

This is a fascinating and amazingly interesting beer. It's not an appealing beer to behold, being a little cloudy and full of floaties. The head is a soda-pop fizz that fades as quickly as it forms. The aroma, however, is complex and intriguing. Sour-smelling, lactic, horse-sweat, funk, grass, and straw. It's not as appealing as a lambic's smell, but it is interesting, and will surely keep your nose engaged. The taste is not really sour..but very well balanced. More funk, and a very appealing crispness. It would be quite refreshing on a hot summer day (too bad I'm drinking it on a cold winter night). Light body, with a relatively low carbonation. Great smoothness and texture...I love the mouthfeel. All in all, this is not a beer that I'd go out of my way to drink, but it's a wonderful experience. Hail the funk!

It's taken a long time to review, but I've really been studying this style deeply to understand it as my first try so I could properly review it.

This is an extremely pale yellow, just a bit deeper than a good Kolsch but lighter than most macros in color. I expect this for the style. It's also extremely cloudy, as expected. The head doesn't last particularly long but what light, fluffy crown does sit on top doesn't dissipate all that quickly, either. A light touch of thick, white lacing is left in strands.
The aroma is tart and lightly citric, much like a good white white, with a strong note of earthy mustiness to it. There's also a dry malts adding a touch of breads and some wheat underlying. This is nearly perfect or the style and surprisingly potent.
The aroma follows suit, and the strong tart, sour flavors lead the way as they ought to. This beer is reminiscent of the green apple flavors of white wine with wheat and plenty of crackery malts underneath. This one is earthy without getting the grassy / herbal quality of a pils, and hops presence is appropriately light.
With a surprisingly rich mouthfeel proving that light-bodied and weak are not synonymous, this one goes down very nicely, particularly given the crispness that's in every sip.
This is spectacularly drinkable, and anyone looking for light, tart and gently sour and for a pinnacle of this style should reach for this one. Of course, I haven't tried any other Berliner Weissbiers, but I imagine this beer will be extremely difficult to match.

S- strong citrus notes,lighter pilsner wheet favor comes in as well
T- Sour and Funky upfront but not overwhelming. Sour apples, lemons and a wheat beer mixed togeather. Nice balance.
M- Light, crisp and carbonated.

Overall, I like this syle and this was the best one Ive had so far. It is really a crisp refreshing beer, would have no problem drinking these all day long in the summer

A- This one's a gusher. Pours an extremely fizzy straw yellow with some more orange highlights. Minimal head that aggressively fizzles to nothing.

S- Very fresh smell, lemon and lime zest, swirls reveal slight hoppiness, also picking up some funk

T- Most surprising, very bold flavors for such a small beer, tons of lactic sourness, a bit of funk, and a sharp lemon/spicy finish

M- A bit light, feels similar to a hefewiezen, very carbonated so a there's some bite

D- Very sessionable. Perfect for a warm day. Low abv and refreshing taste.

i got this one from dmeadows. He also included some strawberry syrup, but this review is without the flavoring added. Ive wanted to review another true Berliner for a long time.

A- The carbonation is lively and crackly. Its rushes to dissipate, leaving no lace. The beer is a clouded, frankly, urine yellow with lots of active bubbles.

S- The smell is very nice and tart with a strong lemony presence. A dash of salt, and lots of funk. Its a very strong barnyard, muddy hay, cattle kind of funk.

T- Tart lemon that can get quite sour. It grips the sides of the tongue. It moves into a very musty hay dust funk. The finish is very minerally like very hard water with a lemon wedge.

M- This is one of the driest beers Ive ever had. Carbonation and tartness all play into the feeling, making this beer very clean.

D- Really nice stuff. I would drink this often in the summer.

500 ml bottle into a Riedel Vinum Bordeaux

My bottle - like all the other ones I've seen say Dr., not Professer, but whatever.

Murky yellow, straw, orange.
Big foamy Wheat Beer head. Settles in a few minutes. Not too much lacing with this foamy head.

Nose: Sweaty lactic sour with earthy key lime & some funk in the background. Violet, licorice, fresh semolina bread, & a hint of raw tangy, pungent honey.
Some complex yeasty Belgian-like creamy sweetness.
Miraculous & unique.

Palate: Big, full, round & grainy. Pungent/spicy ginger & beautiful grainy wheat. Hints at limestone minerality allied to blood orange/lime & wheat character. Vinous, & even Champagne-like, in an earthy, lactic way.
Pretty friggin' complex on the palate as well.

One of the great, unique beers of the world.

Not sure if I can ever live without this one.

Pours a very turbid pale marigold colour, with large carbonation bubbles skulking up to the top. Head is white and foamy, pretty humble but decent retention for the bubble size. Lace is not really there. Looks quite nice.

Smell is fairly funkadelic. Tart and crisp with a lot of acid, giving me Granny Smith apples, cranberries and citrus, all contained within a nice spice jar with cinnamon, ginger and a marmalade sweetness hanging at the back. Nice complexity, crispness, balance. It's ticking many of my boxes.

Taste is interestingly tart. Very fruity with a large melon component that starts early and gets far more pronounced towards the back. Not actually as much acid as I anticipated; the texture puckers slightly but doesn't take hold like other Berliner Weißes I've had. Slight tart berry component late-mid and a strong vinous character on the back is helped by the dry texture. Mostly sour towards the finish but it doesn't linger, and leaves you nicely refreshed, like a very strong lemon squash.

Could use a touch more flavour on the front and perhaps more of a flourish on the finish. It's quite enjoyable as it is, however.

500mL bottle served into a nucleated imperial pint glass

Pours a very light, pale straw yellow color. Tons and tons of carbonation jets up from the nucleation. Lots of foamy white bubbles form at first but soon disappear. This beer basically looks just like an adjunct lager. Only with hella yeast sediment. Floaties everywhere! Weird, alien life form floaties! I think these floaties might be the Arsenic microbes that NASA found. So yeah, it doesn't look pretty. And I don't have any woodruff syrup to gussy things up. For the style? I have to imagine that this is spot-on. Some beers just can't be pretty.

1809 smells, in part, like a typical wheat beer. You've got some zippy tang, some banana ester. But what dominates is the tartness. This is not a funky beer, no. This is a tart beer. Lemon juice everywhere. There's other stuff too: some carbonate smells, something almost milky. But that tart lemon is what stays with you.

The beer smells way more tart than it actually tastes. There is just enough sharp lemon juice sourness to encourage further drinking. You've got wheat bread flavors everywhere, some lactose like flavors, a bit of water (yeah, it gets watery around the middle of the drink - to the point where I thought I had lemon water in my mouth). This is very good. Light, tart, refreshing.

The mouthfeel has a flaw - that watery business that I just mentioned. Other than that, the carbonation is wonderfully lively and the body as thin as could be. The drinkability? Off the charts. This is one of the most drinkable beers I've ever had. Lightly tart, the beer just commands continued quaffing. Amazing.

How is this style of beer not more popular? It's great great great. This particular beer needs to be in six-packs as soon as years ago. It's awesome.
