Notes / Commercial Description:
Already in the 1600s the Berliner Weisse Style Beer was mentioned in documents by the French reformers "Huguenots" as they crossed Berlin on their way to Flanders. In 1809, the Emperor Napoleon and his troops celebrated their Prussian victory with it.

This Berliner Weisse Style Beer is brewed with traditional mash hoping [sic] and without wort boiling. This along with a traditional strain of lactic acid bacteria provide a fruity and dry but palateful character. A character that Napoleon and his troops characterized as "lively" and "elegant".

Poured from a 16 OZ bottle into a mug. The appearance is a bright slightly cloudy golden color with a small white head. The aroma is full of citrus, hops and grass. The taste is slightly tart with a lemon feel.

First off, I like the good Professor's concept: research and follow the tradition and don't improvise. This gives us standard to see how the style has evolved. And in my book, the Berliner Weiss has evolved a bit too much, particularly when today's brewers amp up the lactic and experiment sometimes wildly with syrups to coverup, perhaps, that they don't get the tradition's intent.

All of which brings us to Looks: the Professor's rendition is average at best; the foam goes away quickly and a questionable murkiness doesn't make it any betterthan the average wheater. Smells are interesting: lemon steals that act of the show with a little funk in there for contrast or a supporting role. Tastes a bit like a lemony saison... except the medium tart tells me not to have this with food. It also finishes too dry for lots of foods. Carbonation is a bit prickly along with the tart. But that is one way to get to refreshing and 1809 is.

This is probably the 3rd time I've Had 1809. Each time I was intrigued by the classic recipe. Now I get why. The classics don't get extreme because they have figured it out. That is a good lesson for every crafter venturing into regional styles that, first, should be duplicated and then experimented with on a less extreme basis.
